1 Prologue

The air was humid, and sticky. It darkened the freckles on Annie's tan skin. She didn't mind it though, it reminded her of back home. The sun was always shining, everything... Was perfect. Yes, the move that happened over a year ago still left a bad taste in her mouth, despite the friendly faces and higher education Annie still believed that they shouldn't have moved in the first place.

"HEY ANN!" There were many kids that were running around screaming in joy and excitement after dismissal , but only one voice that Annie knew sounded like that.

She turned to see her closest friend and most popular kid in first grade, Cindy. She had her uniform sloppy and she got dirty for the 3rd time this week. Her mama will be livid. "Got into another fight?"

She nodded with a roll in her eyes and started to walk ahead,  Annie skipped after her, today was special day were both Annie's family and Cindy's family agreed that they could walk home together. In the time that they lived, girls that do not work walking home without a male accomplice(s) was considered strange, then again, quite a few things could be considered strange in this universe.

"Who did you fight today?" She shrugged, taking out a blue push-pop and putting it in her mouth. "Did I hurt your feelings?"

Finally giving in, Cindy spoke. " No, I just don't feel like talking about the fight..."

If Annie was anyone else that's probably where she would of left things, but she wasn't. "Come on, mejor amiga! You get into fights almost everyday. What's so different about this one?"

Cindy gave Annie a death glare, hoping that would make her back down and wither on the spot, but it only worked to make her stronger. Annie has a strong spirit, that's why she was Cindy's friend. It pushed the dirty blonde to whisper something that would merely graze the ears of the purple haired girl.

   "I'm sorry, what?"

"Matthew..." Annie widened her eyes. Matthew, Cindy's big brother in 4th grade. Matthew was always a role model, someone that Annie inspired to be. Why was he fighting with his little sister, which he adored so much.

"What happened?" She kicked the nearest rock in a rage, her face slowly turning red.

   "He's a dirty liar!"

   "Huh?"

"He told me he respects woman, but you wouldn't believe what I saw today!"

   " What did he do?"

"He was touching the girl inappropriately, although... Although, she begged for him to stop."

Annie's breath caught in her chest, Matthew... What? It was quiet as they continued down the road towards their houses. But something was wrong, smoke was curling in the blue skies. The sounds of sirens and flashing red and white lights were coming from down the street.

"Annie... That's coming from your house!" Annie's mind went blank as she ran down the block. The white flames slowly turning into purple and green. She only seen this on the news on the bunny eared TV at Cindy's house. But here it was- happening right in front of her.

Her parents were magic. But more importantly...

They were dead. Or if they weren't, they would be soon.

"ANNIE GET BACK, IT'S DANGEROUS!" Annie ignored the voice as she ventured forwards, only to be pulled back by a worried Cindy before Annie could touch the door encased in flames.

"Kids get back! It's gonna explo-"

White flashed in the two girls eyes as they flew through the air and before they could feel the pain of hitting the ground, they blacked out.
