13 Summoner in-training

"S-Summoning magic?!" Kebin shouted in disbelief.

"Yep, Summoning magic is a very rare aptitude. Only 1 in a 10 000 people have it" I said.

"It's that rare? But if it's that rare then why didn't they notice I have it?" Kebin asked, still shocked.

"Because, in these times, no one really knows how to raise a summoner, so there are really few who knows this aptitude exists," I explained.

"Do you know how summoning magic works?" Kebin asked.

"Yes, I researched it quite a bit," I said.

"C-Can you explain to me what it is?" He stuttered.

"A summoner is someone that owns something called a 'beast house'. A beast house is what decides whether someone can be a summoner or not. When someone with a 'beast house' kills a monster, the monster's soul will stay where it is until you either leave it behind or approach it. If you were to approach it, then you can talk to the monster." I explained to him.

"Talk to it?" Kebin asked.

"Yes, however, in order to store it in your beast house, you will have to get its approval."

"How do I get a monsters approval?" He asked.

"It depends on the monster, but the most common thing to do is to prove your strength or something."

"And afterward, I can call on it, right?" He was getting excited.

"Yeah, but that costs mana, but the monsters that are affected by summoners become stronger."

"One more question, can you teach me how to use summoning magic?" Kebin asked.

"Yes of course, but you will have to come with me to the human empire, so, will your college approve? What about your friend?" After asking this, Kebin looked unsure. "We are leaving in the morning, sorry, but you won't have time to decide."

"Err, can Knifea come with me?"

"No, she belongs in the college. However, you don't belong there, the only thing there for you is Knifea." Kebin spent around 5 minutes thinking about it.

"I've decided, I'll train with you. There is nothing for me in the college, if I can learn summoning magic from you, then I believe following you is my only hope."

"Alright, from now on, you'll be my apprentice. We will start the training right now."

"Now?! Why at night?" He asked.

"Use your head, the strong monsters come out at night," I said,

"So, we're going for a strong one? Will I be able to take on its request?" Kebin looked worried,

"Don't worry about it, the strong monsters are always way too full of themselves."

We went around the forest looking for strong monsters, however, the strongest monster was only rank 5. I decided that getting a rank 6 monster would be a great start, but it's hard to find one around these parts. I even sent out Wolfie to scout ahead.

"Wolfie, did you find anything?" Wolfie shook its head.

"Kebin, do you know any strong monsters nearby?" I asked.

"Let me think… aha, there is a rumor about a lava golem running around." Kebin said.

"Hmm, the minimum rank of a lava golem is rank 4… but it's the only lead we have. So, let's see if we can find it." I said.

We went to the hills not too far from here, lava golems prefer rocky landscape. After searching for a while, we finally spotted something glowing inside a cave. "Enter after me" I told Kebin. I walked into the cave, after walking a few hundred meters, I finally arrived at a golem.

"Now then, Kebin, you know ice magic, right?" I asked Kebin who just arrived.

"Yeah, I know a little."

"Great, so can you freeze these blades?" I asked.

"Where did those come from?" Kebin was surprised.

"I'll tell you later, just freeze them".

After Kebin successfully froze my blades, I picked them up with my iron magic, and fired them deep inside the lava golem. "Seems like its waking up". The lava golem stood up on its two feet, it was roughly human shaped, with arms and legs but with a head that looked like it was just stretched clay. The golem tried to swing its arm at us, but it was weakened by the ice blades. So, it was easy to dodge.

I stretched out my hand towards him, "Spike ball" a spiked iron ball was created in mid-air and thrown at the golem at high-speed. The golem was knocked over, "Iron bind". Iron came out of the ground and closed off the movements of the golem. "Kebin, finish it"

"Got it, Dear spirits of ice, I ask you to crush the ground above you, so you can crush the enemies before me. Ice spikes!" After this chant, ten ice spikes came out of the ground and pierced the golem.

"Now, quickly, sit down in a meditating position. And chant the following: Beast of fire and rock, I demand you to show yourself!" Kebin immediately did what I said. Afterward, the golem's spirit showed itself. "What do you want, summoner?" A deep manly voice came from the spirit. "I want you to serve me," Kebin said.

"You have a strong will, but you know the drill. I want you to show me some of your spirits"

"And how will I do that?" Kebin asked.

"Simple, if you can attract more than 20 souls to yourself, then we have a deal," The golem asked a pretty hefty request.

"20 souls?"

"The magic gathering spell, use it" I answered.

"Oh yeah, Spirits that serve humanity, I need your strength. Mana gathering!"

I was curious myself on how many souls would he attract? Let's see, 5, 7, 13, 17. That was all the spirits he managed to gather, only 17, an average mage would have attracted around 9 of them. "Hmm, it seems that you only managed 17 of them." The golem said.

"You won't come with me?" Kebin asked, he doesn't know about the existence of souls yet, so he doesn't really know what that means.

"Hmm, there is something about the souls you gathered… I can't really explain it, but it's very interesting. However, that is enough for me, I will join you young summoner!" After that, the spirit was sucked into Kebin.

"Eh, what just happened? Where am I?" Kebin asked.

"You are in a carriage. And congratulations, you have successfully stored a rank 6 monster in your beast house." I answered Kebin who looks incredibly tired.

"R-Rank 6?!" Kebin was surprised.

"Yeah, that was our goal all along, wasn't it?"

"Well, you did say that the rank 5 was too weak. But I thought that you meant that having an insect as my summoning monster was bad." "Nothing was wrong about the type of monster, but you may have to think about stuff like that in the future though," I said.

"Well, thank you anyways"

"No problem. But before I forget, we'll be arriving in the Empire tomorrow, so make sure you're rested."

"Alright, I'll see you guys tomorrow then," Kebin said,

"See you". I left the carriage.

"So, Kebin will be traveling with us?" Isao asked,

"Yep, I think he'll be very useful in the future" I answered.

"There is something I want to discuss with you guys," I said,

"Hm? What is it?" Netis asked.

"You heard the rumors right? Right now, Raz is fighting against slave-trade, and I don't think she'll come with us unless that problem is solved right?" I told them.

"Yeah, Raz isn't the type to abandon a project like that" Netis said.

"Err, who is this Raz person?" Isao asked.

"She's the princess of the human empire" I answered.

"Eh?! And she is coming with us?!"

"Yeah, she's an important addition to our party" I answered Isao.
