7 Mentors and and a book of the past

Falko was leading me and Isao through Greenwick, he insisted that we came with him. "Falko, where are you taking us?" Isao asked.

"You see, you two are really talented individuals, and to ensure your future, we are obligated to assign mentors to people such as yourself" Falko answered.

"And who are these mentors?" Isao asked.

"Well, they are for the most part retired adventurers or older adventurers wanting to earn coin. But you two are special, so we are going to assign trustworthy, strong people who have great teaching ability. That is why we summoned two such people." Falko explained.

"And who might these two people be?" I asked.

"A famous assassin that is known as "Phantom" and the creator of the battlemage school" Falko answered.

After following Falko for a while, we arrived at an inn. Falko showed the innkeeper the medallion he had on his chest, after that the innkeeper led us into a room.

"There you are, felt like forever" A man completely clad in black said.

"Hohoho, youths are so impatient" The old guy who had a sword on his hip said.

"Shut up old man, how come your still alive? The battlemages were founded 200 years ago" The black clad man said.

"These two are your new disciples, Isao and Ubel. They are both dark elves" Falko said.

"I heard dark elves specialize in being silent and fast, finally someone worth my time" The black clad man said.

"They also have good magic aptitude. Almost every dark elf has access to magic" The old man said.

"These two guys will be your mentors, you can probably guess by their attires, which one will be guiding you" Falko said before he left.

"Well, Isao, that's your name right? I'm Sanjo, let's go, a thief never waits unless necessary" Isao nodded and followed Sanjo.

"I am Olleus, as you can guess, I am the battlemage founder" Olleus said.

"Sanjo said that the battlemages were founded 200 years ago, so how come you are still alive?" I asked Olleus who was drinking tea.

"It's a tough story, it all started when a student entered my battlemage school. This student had an affinity for necromancy, he was quite skilled at it too. Using his magic to raise his fellow mages from the dead by using the enemy as fuel, it made the battlemages known throughout the world" Olleus said.

"How does necromancy work?" I asked him.

"Necromancy works in a way that allows the user to steal people's lifeforce. Which could possibly kill someone. And by using said lifeforce, the user can revive or breath life into people or objects. Enough about that, let me continue my story" Olleus explained.

"However, upon my death, just before my final sleep, a guard ran in. The guard said that a student have gone on a rampage, stealing out the lifeforce of everyone he met. After the guard made his report the boy entered the room, without mercy, he stole the lifeforce out of the guard too. I thought he was going to do the same to me, but then he suddenly started chanting a different spell, this spell takes all the lifeforce he had stored, including his own, and gives it to one person, the person he gave it to, was me." Olleus told me his story.

"So, you live off the lifeforce of other people?" I asked him.

"Yes, and that will continue for around 5000 years" He answered. "Anyways, let's leave shall we. We wouldn't want to overstay our welcome at the inn."

I followed Olleus all the way to the top of a mountain. After having climbed to the top, we entered a laboratory looking building. Inside he had a lot of books and potions lying around. We continued to inner most part of the building where there was two chairs and a table.

"Please have a seat" Olleus said. I sat down by the table.

"Now, before we start our training, do you have any questions?" Olleus asked.

"Yes, I want to know about the world as a whole" I asked him.

"You want to know about the nations and stuff like that?" Olleus asked.

"Yeah, my parents didn't really know anything about the world" I answered.

"Alright, this world is made up of 5 nations, the desert to the south, this is where we are, this continent isn't that religious and accepts all types of people.

To the west, we have the human empire, as of now, that place was just ravaged by civil war. The reason for this war, is that the new emperor tried to change the laws so that only humans could live on the continent, but they started rebelling, the main cause for this was the general who had a wife, who was an dragonkin. The emperor ended up winning the war and everything that wasn't human was banished from the empire

To the north lies the neutral nation, they consist of giants, the Nordic people and people who simply didn't want to participate in wars.

To the east lies the demonic forest, as bad as it sounds, they are actually quite friendly, as long as you're not human. Since the people that live in the demonic forest are in fact demons, they have a big grudge against the humans who have slaughtered their kings in cold blood, countless times.

And then the last nation, the middle one, the great forest. It's the center of the world, protected by several forces that includes: the elves at the front, behind them are the demons under the 'god of realms' influence, no one really knows what's behind there again, one theory is that spirits of dead heroes are summoned there to protect the center as a last resort.

And as for how the continent looks... just imagine it as a gigantic badly drawn square."

"That answers my question, thank you." I said

"No problem" he replied.

"So what type of training will we be going through?" I asked him.

"First you will have to have magic theory training" Olleus answered.

"Theory?" I looked at him questionably.

"Well, no one really knows what magic is, we can only know the limits of it" Olleus explained.

"How come no one knows the way magic works?" I asked Olleus.

"Since no one managed to understand it, the creator of magic was just too smart" Olleus said.

"Didn't the creator leave behind some sort of book or scroll?" I asked him.

"Well, there is in fact a book left behind by the creator. But currently no one has managed to understand what is written there" Olleus drank some tea that he just made.

"Can I take a look at it?" I asked him.

"If you really want to, then I guess I can lend it to you" Olleus said.

"Wait you actually have it?" I didn't expect him to actually have it.

"Of course I do, every great mage has a copy of the book. Though I wont let you take it before we're done with theory lessons for today" Olleus said.

"Alright" I answered.

Olleus took me through some basic magic theory, stuff like how to start a chant and so on. It was stuff I had already heard about. So the lesson felt like it only took a second. When the lesson was over, Olleus let me have the book.

The book is in fact really hard to understand, but I can't see why they struggled so much with it. I mean the first few pages is about chanting and how its more of a curse than a blessing. But I do have to admit, there are a lot of complicated words used to describe it. I continued to read the book for rest of the night. It wasn't before it was day that I realized I only had managed to read one page. And all I could gather from it, was that I need to learn how to cast magic without chanting.
