1 Chapter 1

We bopped our heads to the beat as we listened to the song.

...

Barbie was reading a magazine, as was Tia. And while Barbie sat on a beanbag, Tia flopped on her stomach on the couch. Courtney sat on the edge by Tia's legs, drumming her sticks on a coffee table that looked like a broken skateboard glued to a couple of crates.

The song was in its last chorus when the music halted abruptly. All the girls turned their heads to the controls and, true enough, the cause of the music being cut short was there.

Standing in sneakers, was Kevin. His hand just leaving the music player, it was obviously him who had turned the music off. He strode in his simple blue shirt and jeans; his hair gelled like a typical highschooler.

"Wow," he said rather sarcastically. "this is an impressive band practice."

"For your information," said the half-asian girl with highlights. "we rehearsed for like a full ten minutes."

"I'd say ten," Tia chimed in.

"Easily ten," Barbie, still on her magazine, encouraged.

"Actually, eight. If you count the snack break."

"A full eight minutes!" Courtney said as she threw one of her drumsticks at the boy.

Kevin easily dodged it as it was poorly aimed. It went straight to the TV. The girls giggled as he walked inside, over to the other side of the garage they were in.

"Uhh, I'm gonna pretend Courtney was aiming that sharp object at the stereo."

"Generous," the blonde girl in the beanbag responded.

"I'm a giver," he replied cockily. "It's one of the things you love about me."

"What's up, Kev?" she finally said with a get-straight-to-the-point tone.

"Uhh," he rubbed the back of his head right before holding them up like it was obvious. "Sunset? Night before school? Sound familiar?"

The girls looked at each other; a little shocked and a little disbelief. Courtney checked her watch to look at the time.

"I didn't realize how late it had gotten," Barbie gasped. "We gotta go."

Both Barbie and Tia closed their magazines, whilst Courtney just walked around the makeshift table, bringing her precious sticks, as they stood up to go to the car.

"Shotgun!" Tia exclaimed.

"You can't call shotgun 'til we see the car," Courtney called out, seeming agitated.

"Shotgun," she then said right after, as the car came into view. Looking quite pleased with herself for that little trick.

"Um, your driving." The girl with the curls retorted. She crossed her arms in front of her chest.

"I know," she replied, rather shyly. "I just... wanted to win."

"You're unbelievable," Tia laughed, breaking her 'angry' composure. It was just friendly banter, after all. "it's adorable."

The drummer girl grinned cheesily. "I know."

Little did they know, as the two girls were talking, Barbie and Kevin had their own little conversation too.
