6 Chapter 6

Jessica's POV

I made my way to the hall, feeling nervous and excited at the same time. I entered through the first door on my right with a sign on the door saying "Administrative Office."

I took a deep breath before turning the doorknob, the room had a dark blue interior with 20-30 desks arranged, potted plants in the corners and water dispensers.

The room only had a couple officers in, four to be exact. One was sitting in his desk, filing through his computer while the other three were talking to each other. As soon as I entered, all four of them put their attention to the latter.

The three officers started whispering to each other,"The rookie has arrived." one said.

"I heard she's from the city." another said.

"I bet she's a tough nut." the last one remarked.

I quietly made my way past them and through the other desks, I find my name on one and was completely shocked, my own desk. A metal-plated tag with my name carved in bold letters sitting alone on top of an empty dark brown maple wood desk.

I sat down on the provided office chair and ran my hands through the tabletop feeling its smooth and polished texture. I mentally grin on my own amusement when I noticed the three had gone quiet.

I almost didn't notice that the fourth officer was actually just a table beside mine. He looked busy and didn't care enough to notice my presence as his "table roommate".

I was about to speak to him when all of a sudden,"Good morning..." the three officers appeared on the other side of my table,"Officer Flynn." extending his neck to look at the metal plate on my table.

I gave him a stern and dead-on look as well as the other two,"So you're the rookie from the city, huh?" he pointed out with a smug grin,"Maybe we could go out sometime, get a drink and get to know each other a little bit or if you ever wanna get nasty..." he licked his lips disgustingly and I flinch away and mentally puke in my own head.

"What do ya say?" he asked, his two posses smiling behind him.

I took a deep breath, I'm about to go crazy on this guy,"Sorry, I don't go out with assholes who have their dicks in their hand all the time." I stated.

The two behind him at least laughed at my joke but I think I just hit home on his ass,"Feisty. How long do you think a bitch like you could last in the force?" he countered.

"Longer than you last in bed." I replied. The two literally burst out laughing while this guy is still trying to win my game.

"Bitch! Someone should teach you a lesson about respecting your superiors." he angrily expressed, I got him on the hook now.

"Why should I? Men like you are the reason God created the middle finger." I stated.

He raised his hand, about to attack me so I stood up from my chair ready to defend myself,"Marquez, what the hell are you doing?!" a deep voice boomed through the room.

We all looked to the man in front of us,"Chief, I was just testing the rookie." Marquez put his down, trying to play jt off.

"Shut the hell up, you three get back to your desks." the chief ordered, the three quickly scattered back to their desks and acted like it was nothing.

The chief looked at me,"Come to my office, rookie." he ordered. His voice was threatening and full of authority to send shivers down my spine, it wasn't until he left the room that I breathed properly.

I looked at the fourth officer who's giggling in his chair,"Do you think that's funny?" I asked him.

"Calm down, rookie. You might catch a cold with those sick burns." he commented through his laugh.

I ignored his retort and followed after Chief Wilkinson to his office. He sat in his swivel chair and I stood upright before him and saluted. His office has a brown interior, very simplistic and I noticed his framed uniformed photo behind him.

He wore a white police uniform and holding his cap on his left thigh while sitting on a stool.

I realized he was once a soldier then, his smile on the photo looked genuine so he looked like a friendly person which is something that didn't come to my mind at first when he yelled in the room earlier.

"Jessica Flynn, your first day on the job and you're already causing trouble in my department." he calmly glared at me.

"I apologize for my behavior, sir. Although I was just defending myself." I explained to him.

"I know. Just don't try to lose." he suddenly advised.

"Yes, sir." I said with a slight grin. I guess he's not that stern.

"Quick question, why are you here?" he asked,"I mean, why were you assigned here?" he clarified.

"The city has offered more service and people to local towns and have assigned new recruits and graduates from the academy to help." I formally answered.

"Bullshit." he retorted,"I bet you were only sent here for my department to take another responsibility." he stated, his lips tugging upwards.

It makes me sad to hear that my own superior is saying that straight to my face but what really hurts is that it's probably not far from the truth.

I admit despite the city being my home and soul is, the people than run them are complete assholes and corrupt liars, it wouldn't be too far off that they would do that such of thing to save themselves from costs and having to deal with its citizens.

"Don't think I'm trying to offend you, Officer Flynn. I'm just being honest." he stated.

"It's fine, sir." I lied.

"Anyways, I should be acquainting you by now. I am Terry Wilkinson, the chief officer of this department. I hope you make your stay here as short as possible so we can avoid having to talk to each other about wanting to be reinstated to your city..." he stated.

"Actually, sir." I cut him off,"I already plan on getting reinstated back to the city. I plan on taking up a case that could move me up my ranks quickly so I can be put back." I confidently confessed.

He looked at me in shock,"Wow, rookie. You're already ahead of yourself, I already like the way you talk." he commented,"Make sure you take one of our hardest cases so I could put a good word in for you to your city's department." he suggested.

"Yes, sir." I saluted.

"Anyways, your partner is going to be Deacon Hickman, our longest running detective here. I advise you to be careful around him, he's not really the type to like partners so he can be very stingy." he introduced,"He's also probably getting drunk in the bar again so don't get your hopes up that you'll meet him today."

"Do I have to come pick him up?" I asked.

"No, he'll probably be here around noon. He always does." he answered,"That's all, you can go now, rookie. I'm really rooting for you right now." he smiled at me, the first smile I ever got to see from him since I got here.

I left his office and went back to the administrative office where more officers have arrived. All of them were mostly indifferent towards my presence and makes me wonder if everyone in this town is like this to newcomers.

I sat back in my desk, wondering what to do next while my partner is currently out enjoying himself. Then I remember about the guy I talked to earlier.

I looked beside me to where his desk is and noticed him gone. I wonder where he went, I have to talk to him and find about the case I will be handling to get out of this place.

The lounge area was pretty decorated, a gray long couch in the middle, a single seater and an ottoman beside it. They had a flat-screen TV and a coffee machine beside the fridge. I found him making himself a cup on the table so I approached him.

"Rookie, what brings you here?" he asked, stirring his coffee with a stirrer.

"I was looking for you." I answered honestly.

"Really?" he took a quick sip before his eyes landed on me,"Well, what is it?" he asked again looking bored.

"I was wondering if you could tell me about your hardest and unsolved case you have here." I replied, earning an eyebrow raise from him.

"Hmm, that's interesting. Are you trying to prove something to your peers?" he asked me with a smuggish smile.

I let out a sigh,"No, I just want to get out of this town as soon as possible and solving the hardest case around here is what will get me promoted to a higher rank so I can get reinstated back to the city." I answered him bluntly.

"Wow." he remarked,"You're not even gonna stay for Briggs' birthday?" I stood there while he laughed at his own joke.

"Are you done? If you're not gonna help then you're just wasting my time." I retorted.

"Would you calm down? You're no fun." he said, trying to hold his laughter back,"You wanna know the most unsolved case we've had?" he spoke.

I finally get a relief that he's about to tell me what I've been asking him for the past 5 minutes.
