The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

"Your bond has another feature I should tell you about," I chuckled as he caught his breath, "But first, how do you feel?"

"Besides the shock," Ethan paused as he thought it all over, "I feel like I just woke up from a good nights sleep."

"So it does work the same for me as it does for you," I looked over the new crack in the wall slowly, "Now that new thing I mentioned. You can borrow my power for ten seconds."

"Borrow your power?" Ethan frowned at me as he started to think it all over, "What do you mean borrow your power?"

"My strength, speed, resistance to damage or my enhanced senses," I chuckled, "You can borrow any one of them for ten seconds."

"I can be as strong as you for ten seconds," Ethan looked like his eyes were going to pop out of his head for a second there, "That sounds insane. How do I do it?"

"Not sure," I smiled at him, "You'll have to figure that out yourself, but don't get to hasty. It takes a huge amount of stamina for you to use it. I'd wait for a situation when you don't have much to do afterwards."

Our alarms started going off. It startled Ethan, but I was waiting for it.

"Go get ready for class," I opened the door to my room, "And get a shower in. You stink."

Savannah knocked on the door a minute later. I switched forms, and got dressed as soon as Ethan was out of the room. Ignoring Savannah's knocking for a minute as I got dressed. I let her in as soon as I had my clothes on. I pull my boots out of my room, and thumped them on the floor as I got ready to pull them on.

"What did you do last night?" Savannah grumbled at me, "You gave me a headache."

"Ethan managed to get into my inner world," I smiled, "And our bond evolved in the process."

"How many cracks are in your walls?" Savannah glanced through the open door of my bedroom, "Aren't you going to get those fixed?"

"They'll charge me for it," I mumbled angrily.

"You should have more than enough credits to pay for these kind of repairs," Savannah grumped.

"Yeah," I snorted, "And that means letting people in my room." I narrowed my eyes at her, "What if they find something I don't want them to find?"

"They'll find out eventually either way," Savannah smirked as I put my boots on, "It's better if they don't find out through a random inspection."

"Ethan," I straightened up slowly, "Why don't you tell her about a few of the perks that came with that headache?"

This is stupid, and irritating. Does she really think that I would give her a headache for no reason?

"What are you talking about?" Ethan pulled his shirt on as he came out of the bathroom.

Why would you say that kind of stuff in front of Savannah? Wait that wasn't my thought?

"Ethan," I frowned, "What did I just say to you?"

"You asked me to tell Savannah why we gave her a headache," Ethan looked at me funny, "Then you said that this was stupid, and irritating."

"That's interesting," I felt a creepy grin spreading across my face, "Looks like we just found another interesting bonus. Now we just got to figure out how to use it." I glanced down at the time, "Time to get a move on Ethan. We're going to be late for our clubs at this rate."

I nodded to Savannah as I passed her on my way out of the room. She looked at me briefly before following. She was still irritated with me, but I didn't have time to worry about that right now. I couldn't be late to Goliath's club meeting. He might be suspicious if we arrived late.

I had enough problems to deal with without dealing with a suspicious Goliath. He already suspected me of being a mage, but he still though I was on his side. If he started thinking I was on someone else's side than I'd be in serious trouble. My muscles tensed as I worried about what might happen if I got even further up his watch list. We dropped Ethan at his club, and moved on to our own.

I couldn't hide from Goliath's searching eyes all the time on top of everything else I had to worry about. I really didn't want to deal with this kind of shit right now. We sat separate from the rest of the club as usual.

"We need to think of an exit strategy," I whispered to her as Goliath started explaining the plan for the day, "Since getting discovered is only a matter of time, we need a plan for what we do when that happens."

"You mean you don't have one yet?" Savannah scoffed at me.

"I've been flying by the seat of my pants since day one so stop complaining," I refocused on Goliath, "Nothing I have done so far was planned. I've just been pushing to get stronger this whole time with little to no plan at all."

The confusion that came through our bond made me snort.

"You really had no plan at all," Savannah frowned to herself, "Are you some sort of idiot?"

"I didn't have time to make a plan," I frowned, "Military showed up to pick me up before I could do much planning for anything." I shrugged, "I'll tell you more when we get done here if you want me too."

"You've been really expressive lately," Savannah relaxed into her seat as she focused on Goliath, "Normally you're face is blank."

"I've been trying," I let my face fall back into it's normal perfect poker face, "People pay more attention to someone who stands out. I'd rather stand out as a sniper than anything else."

"A sniper?" Savannah seemed to think it over a second, "Support fighters that stay out of the main fray of the battle. Away from most of the action." Savannah nodded, "Not a bad idea for someone like you."
