47 47. Saving people

While worrying about the people he knew and fought with together for years his heart palpitated at their maneuvers and suddenly his eyes became dark.

This is why she got upset... Stupid, he really si stupid... He started hitting his head until a cold voice yelled. ''Idiot, you are already dumb, are you trying to become even dumber. Instead of doing unnecessary things concentrate!!!''

He stopped and realized that he made a mistake again. No wonder she is always calling him stupid. But when did he become like this? And why?

''200 yads further the street becomes straight for at least 10 miles. Hit the gas!'' Mario just yelled trough the microphone while he started pacing.

Small drops of sweat started appearing on his forehead as he saw the two sides coming closer and closer to them. After a while, he yelled. ''Turn right and rush towards the tall walls. You were lucky that you were near this place or who knows what would have happened to you. Hurry! Oliver will be waiting for you upstairs.''

''General, we have so many trucks, can they even have enough space there?'' The Major was worried about his people as trucks were filled with soldiers.

''Don't worry about unnecessary things. Do you think I would have brought you here if there was no space for all of you? Don't talk too much and concentrate on the roads!''

''Yes, sir!'' He could see them turning towards the shelter and he ordered. ''Computer, open the walls for them to enter and connect me with Oliver.''

Not even a moment later he could hear his brother's voice. ''Are they nearby?''

''Yes. Do you have soldiers in full gear there?'' Mario thought about the possibility of some of the zombies that they might have missed.

''Don't worry. I have sent outside squadron of people to check the walls and surroundings. They said it's clear. Some of them are still outside and waiting for the trucks.'' Oliver gave him a brief report.

''Good. As soon they enter everybody should stop moving. Even tho we have thick walls we have no idea how good their hearing is. So everyone should just stop for the time being.'' Mario stared at the line of cars and could literally see them entering the space and as soon they parked they turned the engines off and didn't move.

One by one the trucks entered and as soon the last one passed the wall, the wall rose slowly from the ground as the soldiers rushed inside the shelter. The main door was already closing and a thick stone wall rose from the ground completely enveloping the entry.

There was complete silence on the first level. All sat down and waited. And then hell got loose.

There was no sound but the vibrations from outside could be felt as the wave after wave of zombies rushed towards them. The storm was still not there so when the zombie tide was about to come near the shelter, out the tubes in wall strange smoke rose and zombie tide stopped.

Mario rose his eyebrows. ''What is that? Wait, you are trying to dissipate their smell?''

Actually he was just thinking loudly but Emma's voice could be heard. ''Yes. I asked our scientist to make a strong smell that could be used to dissipate the smell of humans. Now I shall do as before. I will lure them away with sounds. No other way.''

Suddenly zombie tide turned around and rushed toward the huge city about 200 miles away. In the whole city, cars began to become louder. As the tide was not directly over the shelter, the vibrations became less and less and soon no more.

Oliver waited for the next order. ''Bring them down here. I need to talk to them. Emma, how big is this space actually?''

Her voice was calm and collected as she explained. ''All these places here upstairs can be put into a tiny corner of that space. Like at least five supercities together. Millions of people could have lived there safely. Literally, millions!'' Her bitter voice made him feel sorry.

''The people upstairs had no freaking idea what they did wrong. Did they?'' Mario was feeling bitter as well. He gave most of his youth to the government, doing tasks for them. But seeing how this little woman has more ideas than the whole seat of those people, he could only sigh. ''What should we do with these people here?''

''Jail them. By the way. There is a connection to this place with an underground train or something. I cut all the power and I am right now in their main compute trying to figure out what is their next plan. So many secret files. I will send them to you. You and your people will be bored for a while. You can put them into the office and to check data. Report anything that could matter. From my side, I go sleep a bit.''

Mario nodded and smiled. ''Good night. '' But no answer could be heard. He knew that he was now tested so he jumped into nearest car and rushed towards the elevators.

As soon the first group of soldiers came down he started ordering. ''Get ready for a marsh. Military vehicles are at the base. We have all we need there. Wait for everyone.''

As they went to the side tow ait for the rest of the people, Mario checked the data on the computer. Major came to him and saluted. ''General!''

''At ease. The base itself is so huge, and those people never had even a plan to save our people. Do they really look down on simple soldiers? They could have saved so many...'' His face became dark as he finally realized how huge space is.

''General, our families are said to be in a safe place.'' Major looked at him with hope while other soldiers as well had the same hope in their eyes.

''I don't know. Computer, do you have maybe data about their families?'' He asked everyone to say their data and their numbers.

Moments later computer's voice could be heard. ''Most of the families were indeed gathered in one of the shelters, but there is a problem. I do not think they have enough supplies. How to proceed further?''
