Year 2008, Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture

A loud cry rang throughout the hospital room. On the bed lay a woman with a pale face and a relieved expression. In her hands was a baby boy that kept weeping. Looking at him with fond eyes she declared "Your name shall be Hatake Yashito." With a pained smile and great difficulty she kissed the boy on the forehead. Moments later, her head slumped to the side. The doctors could only watch on with grief. The woman's name is Rie Yashito, someone who had an inborn weak physique.

It was a miracle for her to live on to this point. They knew very well that this would be the outcome when they got the news that Madam Rie got pregnant. Her husband didn't want anything to do with children so he ran off. They could only hope that Hatake would be adopted by a caring family so that he could at least have a great childhood.

14 years had passed since Hatake was born. When he turned 3 years old, a family wanted to adopt Hatake out of pity. Ever since he was a baby, he had been living with his Grandma whom he loved dearly. He didn't want to seperate with her but he knew that she was already very old and when he turned older, he couldn't keep mooching off of her.

Over the years he had adoped Rie's ash colored hair and eyes aswell her husband's handsome features. Countless girls in highschool pursued him but he rejected all of them. His only interest lay in videogames.

Early morning, Hatake sat on the sofa watching TV with great interest. It was an ad about the famous NerveGear that was being talked about and the upcoming game Sword Art Online. For some reason all this felt very familiar to him.

Suddenly, everything stopped, whether it be the TV Ad, the clock or else. Hatake suddenly fell on the ground, whrithing in pain as a sudden headache struck him. Countless memories flashed in his mind. His past life, the meeting with the Sentinel and his gift. While digesting the regained information a voice resounded in his head.
