1 All things come to an end

"We are looking at days to short weeks at best." The doctor's words resonated in Arthur's mind. "The cancer has spread to the liver, lungs and bones, your organs will not be able to hold out much longer." Perhaps, there was some sympathy in the doctor's voice, but his eyes looked lifeless.

Arthur put up a brave smile. He was 88, he has had a good run for his life. Since the severe back pain started several months back, he'd long expected something sinister was going on in his body. He was told he had pancreatic cancer a week back, and after more scans to confirm the extent of his disease, it no longer surprised him. He knew his body has been getting weaker, easily getting breathless the last few days. It was his time. "Doctor, what would you recommend?"

The doctor hesitated for a moment. "In view of your age and how advanced the disease it, I would suggest that we do our best to treat the pain and breathlessness. From the records, you are living alone, would you prefer to pass on at home or in a hospice?"

Arthur smiled, not for himself but to ease the doctor, "I have made my preparations, but I would like one last look at home before going to a hospice."

"Sure, let me get the palliative team to make the arrangements for you. Shall we arrange for an ambulance to pick you up at about 2 pm or so?"
