71 Counterattack

An odd duo stood back to back surrounded by well over a hundred heartless betas. On one side stood a rather young general. His spear illuminating its surroundings with a bright light, as if it was fighting against the unending red light that came from the sun.

But this white light wasn't simply for show. Every time the young man struck down the light easily burned through the betas exoskeleton and the spear penetrated deep killing a beta each strike.

On the other side stood a rather young half-elf. With her hands stretched forwards, she awaited the attacks of the rather terrifying beasts before her. These expressionless creatures soon jumped forward, their pincers going straight for her neck. Yet just before blood would have been spilled a faint black barrier popped up out of nowhere. Within a moment the barrier had stretched out becoming a large hemisphere enveloping over half a dozen betas.

Seven betas were trapped within this faint barrier that looked as if it would break if you so much as leaned on it. But even when the betas used their entire body weight to try and break through it, they were entirely ineffective. Perhaps if they used their pincers to attack the barrier around them the situation might be different but these creatures didn't have the brains to think about attacking something that wasn't alive, at least not without the assistance of the alphas.

Yet soon it became clear that even if the betas attacked together they wouldn't have been able to do a thing. The barrier surrounding them began shrinking, becoming thicker while it was doing so. No matter how much the betas trashed around the barrier didn't get so much as a scratch. Soon it had already halved in size, becoming 2 centimeters thick, at this point, the 7 betas were standing against each other, desperately trying to get out.

When it got to this point most kinds of magical barriers would be unable to shrink any further, but this barrier was enhanced by the red sunlight, allowing it to become stronger than usual. The barrier paused for a moment before cracks started appearing on the carapaces of the outermost betas. A moment later they completely caved in, the barrier moving further squishing their insides causing green mucus to splash around. The barrier got smaller and smaller, causing more and more betas to be squished. After all the betas were swiftly killed, the hemisphere finally disappeared, only leaving behind a hemisphere made of shell and meat.

From the beginning to the end, only a few minutes had passed. Yet 4 hemispheres each containing half a dozen betas were littering the ground. After some time had passed these too disappeared leaving behind small piles of white crystals.

Once the betas in the vicinity had been dealt with the duo could take a small breather. The swarms of betas further away were still just heading up the mountain, ignoring the duo so at this moment they only had to deal with the betas falling off the mountain landing in the vicinity and the ones that arrived from the crack to the west.

Now that the number of enemies had lessened they finally had the opportunity to have a good look around. Currently, they were standing to the northwest of flat-head mountain. They saw that Jay started descending to the very west of the mountain, hence they decided to head down a bit more towards the north. This way they might be able to help him out without getting attacked by the same enemies that got him in a pinch.

At this very same time, another duo had descended south-west of the mountain. This duo had started descending even before Jay's message had arrived.

Jake always thought of himself as a smart individual. In life, he nearly always made the right decisions, even before he came to planet Hope. This skill helped him once again back when he surrendered to Pangea. Even though at this point he realized death didn't seem to be permanent in this world, he had no doubt there would be negatives connected to it.

He had previously traveled to the main city and the lack of decent equipment the mainstream adventurers had was rather shocking to him.

Now he once more had to make a tough call so he fetched Gustel to go deal with the current situation. If things kept going the way they were the base atop the mountain would soon fall, most of the soldiers would die and Pangea's reputation would go down the drain. It was because of this Jake decided to head down the mountain. Thousands of betas had arrived atop the mountain thus far yet only a single alpha had appeared.

He didn't find the reason for this to be hard to figure out either. The alphas didn't have a thick shell so they would probably fall off and die if they tried to climb the mountain. Yet once he wanted to inform Jay of his findings he heard that he had already started going down the mountain in order to look for alphas, hearing this he decided to go down the mountain together with Gustel in a slightly different direction. If both Jay as well as themselves succeeded the city atop the mountain might not fall.

Going down the mountain the duo hadn't faced much resistance. Most betas ignored them and the few that they did run straight into were swiftly thrown off the mountain. Now that they were down however, the situation changed. But a moment had passed yet a dozen betas were already nearly upon them. Gustel immediately stepped forward, his spear clenched within his hands, his face carrying a tranquil expression.

It was thanks to this that Jake, too, managed to stay calm. Preparing to take on the group of betas.
