A Night To Remember

By the time Kat arrived to Marino’s, Mitchell was sitting at the table there waiting for her. She was running late. Traffic was backed up due to an accident on this rainy night.

She looked beautiful in a light purple dress with spaghetti straps with a dark purple blazer.

“Hi, reservation for Simmons?” she told the hostess as she put her umbrella away.

The blonde restaurant hostess looked up and brought Kat over to the table. “Here you are Ms. McKinnon.” Kat looked at the woman with surprise. The young hostess smiled and whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m a huge fan of yours. I recognized you the minute you walked in. I hope you don’t mind.” Kat smiled. She forgot that at times people see her on television or on YouTube regularly. “Oh, no problem. Thank you.” She told the woman.

Mitchell sat there with a smile on his face while putting down his wine glass.

“Started without me I see. Man, it is pouring out there. Traffic was backed up for miles.” Kat replied as she took off her coat and placed her purse down on the table.”

“Hope you don’t mind. I ordered us a bottle of Dom for the night.”

“Well now!” she said as she sat down. ”Dom Perignon? This is a happy day.” Kat said.

“Well, both of us got some great news. A splurge every now and then won’t hurt.”

“Not at all.” She said.

“The Greenberg’s penthouse sold for $6 million and before you got here, it looks like I may have two more people under contract.”

Kat’s eyes widened with surprise. “Damn, go you. After I hung up with you and dropped off Ross’ shirt at the cleaners and went home and changed. Sorry, I'm so late. She said.

Mitchell looked at his phone. He began to text.

Kat’s stomach began to growl. She looked at the menu. Despite her feeling hungry, there wasn’t anything on the menu she really wanted.

“Hmm.” She said.

“What’s up?” Mitchell asked looking briefly from his phone.

“Can’t decide on what I want. I have to admit babe. I’m really not in the mood for Italian this evening.” She told him.

He looked up from his phone for a second. “Well, we can always go somewhere else?” he told her. “That sushi place you like is open as is Fernando’s.”

“Nah, it’s ok. I’m just in research mode with the whole Jacques Primeau story.”

“Well, how much research can you do on him? You pretty much know all there is to know about him Kat.” Mitchell said as he gave his phone a frustrated glance and placed it down.

“To tell you the truth. I don’t. Despite him being on television and his books, he doesn’t offer a lot of opportunities for people to discuss his personal life. I’ll definitely discuss his upbringing and his training, but sometimes people just want a taste of what makes the person who they are.”

“Got it.” He said as he began to look at his phone once more, shaking his head.

A waitress suddenly came up to the table. She was short and petite with her long brown hair in a neat ponytail. She looked as if she had been working for hours. Her blue eyes were ringed with dark circles. “Hi there. “ she said. “My name is Heather. I'll be your waitress for the evening. Can I get you anything?”

Mitchell glanced at the woman with barely an acknowledgement. “Yes, We’ll both have the eggplant parmesan, some calamari and can I have another glass for the lady please?” he asked.

Kat looked at the woman and smiled. Mitchell’s tone towards the woman was dismissive.

“No problem sir.” Said the waitress as she grabbed the menus. “I’ll be back with your order.” She told them and walked away.

Kat looked over at Mitchell as he continued to look and text on his phone, appearing angry at whatever message he was getting. Mitchell looked up at Kat.

“What?” he asked as he slammed the phone down in disgust

“What was that?” Kat asked.

“What was what?”

“Since when do you order for me?” she asked

“Well, you said you weren’t up to it and didn’t want to go anywhere else so I-

“”Decided to take it upon yourself to order something for me that I didn’t feel like having.” she interrupted.

“You may not want it now. But, you can have it later.” He said as he looked at his phone once more. He began to text furiously.

She hated when he got like this. He was consumed with most likely another potential sale. It bothered her that it seemed like more and more that Mitchell was seeing people not as human, but as potential commission for his increasing real estate sales portfolio.

Kat rolled her eyes. “You know hon. I think I’m going to go home. I’m tired. I have a lot to do in the next couple of days.”

Mitchell suddenly looked up from his phone. “Wait, what?” he said appearing surprised

Kat began to get up. “I’m going to go home. You’re obviously distracted by your text messages. . Why don’t you go back to the office and finish doing what your doing and I’ll meet you at home.”

Mitchell was frustrated. “No, You don't understand Kat, it wasn’t that. “he said as he got up

Kat began to walk towards the door. He quickly sprinted behind her. “Wasn’t what Mitch? You asked me to come celebrate and all night, you’ve been on your phone texting and slamming your phone down.” Kat said. “It’s ok. I get it. You’re a popular and great real estate agent. I’ll meet you at home.” She said as she began to put her coat on.

“Kat, it’s not like that.” He pleaded

“It’s ok babe.” She said as she walked out the door and began to walk down the rainy street. He ran after her.

“Kat, I love you! Marry me.” He yelled.

Kat realized that she had forgotten her umbrella at the restaurant. She was soaked from head to toe.

She was stunned and confused. The rain felt like cold pins being thrown at her face. She turned around and looked at him. He looked like a drowned rat who was kneeling in front of everyone in the middle of the sidewalk.

“What?” she said.

“Marry me, Katherine. I’m sorry. I was texting the quartet I had planned for the night. This weather messed up everything. I had this night planned for awhile. But everything that could go wrong, went wrong. I guess I'll go back to basics. “ He took out a Cartier box. He opened it up and there was a 6 carat pink diamond ring surrounded by diamonds. “I adore you. Everything about you. These last three years have been the best three years of my life. You’ve taught me so much about people and life. You are one of the most talented and strongest women I know. I am sorry. But I will make it up for you forever and always.”

“Mitch, I-“ she said.

“Kat please.” Mitchell said walking up to her. He held her hand and kneeled in the middle of the rainy sidewalk “Will you marry me?”

Kat nodded her head. She felt like an idiot. “Yes, I’ll marry you.” She said.

The crowd that had gathered around the sidewalk clapped as Mitchell placed the ring on Kat’s finger and kissed her.

Kat’s phone rang through her coat. Mitchell felt the vibrating phone. “Are you going to get that?” he smiled.

She picked it up and noticed that there were a ton of missed calls from her mother. “It’s mom. It’s probably about my dad and this interview. Let me answer it. “ she said as Mitchell held her hand.

“Hello Mom?” Kat said answering the phone.

“Kat, where have you been? I’ve been calling you for hours.” Her mother said.

“I’ve been busy with work. What’s going on? We’re still surprising dad right?” she asked.

“Honey, you need to come home. Your dad has had a heart attack and is in the ICU.” Her mother cried.

Kat was stunned.

“I’m coming right now.” She said.
