2 Chapter 1

I watched through the window of my room, the air moved my hair that fell from my messy bun, it smelled of nature; to tree bark, wet soil, plants and grass. It had been 5 minutes since I woke up, it was my first day of school, the others were excited about that, but myself I didn't care if it was the first day or the last, I hated the institute.

Would it be wrong to miss the first day of class? It could but that didn't matter, it did matter how scared I was of my mother when she got angry, so I had no choice but to go.

It took me a while to get away from the window, but in the end and with one last inhalation of that wonderful air I had the willpower to go to the bathroom.

I looked at myself in the mirror, I looked sad, I had dark circles from reading at night, I was a compulsive reader, it was hard for me to hold back and stop reading. My brown hair was tied up in a half-undone bun, strands of it covered my face, and the rest was tied up with a scrunchie that I couldn't see. I brushed my teeth, my face and I left my hair down without combing, at least I molded it a little with my hands, the most that could be done with it.

I put on the first thing I found in the closet and with the backpack I ran out of my house.

—Ali! —I listened from somewhere before entering the institute.

I looked to my left, it was Emmy, my best friend, I had met her the first day of high school, and we had instantly hit it off, she was blonde and brown-eyed, she always wore a high tail.

We both loved to read, in fact at our pajama parties we had a “reading” section where we just put on music and read.

—Hello E! —I greeted her by her nickname and ran to her—. Excited?

—Excited to meet the new ones. —She said in adolescent mode.

—Are there new ones? —Nobody had come for a long time, we lived in a town far from the city, besides that our institute was terrible, the teachers were old and bitter -Except for the literature teacher- and the way of teaching most of the time was dictating and putting homework, something in my opinion, useless and boring.

—You have to be more attentive to gossip Ali. —E was very nosy, knew everything and always told me—. A new family has come, they live on Mr. Fills' farm. —I shuddered to hear his name, Mr. Fills was a completely bitter being who liked to scare children so that they would not come near—. They say they are his grandchildren. —She lowered her voice—. What kind of girl would fall in love with Mr. Fills so that she now has grandchildren?

I laughed out loud.

—A kind of girl who is also like him. —I responded

—Where she and Mr. Fils in love? —That made me think, whenever I saw a couple at school, or on the street, I wondered if they really were in love, or if they knew what love was, or did they just “like” each other, or if they still felt butterflies in the stomach every time they spoke even if it had been years or if they really had a love story that was worth it.

We entered the institute in silence, the corridors were full of screaming people, the kids of first year went together, some seemed to believe they were gods and others seemed to feel that they did not fit in, others were rather scared. I would have liked to tell them that the change are not really that great, but I didn't have time and I went to class.

In a few minutes an older man, short, and more wrinkled than he should have for his age, with a bitter face entered and sat in the professor's chair. We were in math, one of the most hated classes.

—Good morning, it's the first day of class, but that doesn't mean that you're going to get rid of giving normal class. —We all complained and rolled our eyes.

—Chh. —I listened to my right, it was E, we had always sat together. I looked at her, implying that I was listening—. You're not going to attend either, right? —I held back a laugh.

—Who is going to do it? —I laughed

—Eleanor. —She answered. Eleanor was the posh and pretty girl from high school, one of the popular ones, her family was rich as the typical Disney story, on the other hand and breaking it she got very good grades and did everything that should be done in class, that however, did not ensure her Intelligence, in fact, she was the stupidest person I had ever met, the only thing she had was memory, money and her pretty face to blackmail the teachers.

—Well, I'm going to pass the list. —Mr. Williams brought me out of my thoughts—. Tyler… James… —He kept saying names—. Alice... —I not answer—. Alice? —I still didn't answer, I was in my world—. Alice! —Scream the teacher. I raised my hand accompanying her with a very bored “meee”—. Still in your world, very bad. —He looked at me disappointed, it was what everyone did, I had gotten used to it. He kept running the roll until he came up with a name he'd never heard of—. Jackson Steel?

The whole class we turned around, a boy with dark hair and bottomless eyes was at the end of the class, he was definitely very attractive, he was also wearing a black T-shirt and jeans—. The teachers say that your twin is in a class in a higher grade, that they have advanced him, they also proposed it to you, why didn't you accept?

—Mr. Williams. —Jackson said. His voice was deep, with a touch of wry and amusement. I would have gladly accepted, but in this class, there are things that interest me. —He smiled, he seemed nice, but I repeated, seemed, that fake smile not convinced me, although I may have been paranoid from reading so much.

I stared at him trying to analyze it, he had something strange, he had an aura that although I didn't like it, it attracted me. His gaze met mine and I blushed, I must have looked like a stalker, or paranoid. He analyzed me looking me up and down, and finally smiled, not in the same way as before, this time it reflected something, but it was impossible to decipher what.

Once class was over, E and I took less than two seconds to grab our backpacks, packed, and run out of class.

I noticed that Eleanor was trying to talk to Jackson, but he was ignoring her as much as possible, I couldn't help but laugh.

Two classes later, the alarm announced recess time. The two of us took out our sandwich and sat in a corner of the patio, we began to have lunch.

—I didn't remember Mr. Williams being so old. —I said, breaking the silence—. It seems like a raisin compared to last year.

—Yes, I have thought the same. “He said with his mouth full, swallowed.” Have you seen the way the class gave? I think it's a robot pretending to be human. —I laughed

—I agree with the theory, be careful when you get home lest the FBI break down your door. —We both laughed, but a feeling of being watched washed over me.

I looked everywhere and finally discovered the source of that feeling, the new one: Jackson, was watching me, and my gaze did not prevent him from averting his.

—Are you seeing how he looks at you? —E said, I woke up from my reverie and looked at her. In addition, he is very handsome.

—I don't care how handsome he is or what he looks at me, he has something I don't like.

—You're already paranoid! —She screamed—. What book have you read tonight, one of Agatha Christie or what?

—Says the girl who said our geography and history teacher is a robot! —I laughed

—I'm sorry, but I'm right! —I look at Mr. Williams, yes, he looked like a robot.

—Okay, maybe you in reason.

I saw a boy in a black T-shirt approach Jackson, it must be his brother with him. Eleanor's group approached them. Jackson took another look at me, smiled, and left with them.

After three classes and three more hours of unbearable boredom, the alarm sounded back home, E left without me, it was his little cousin's birthday and his parents forced him to go, she said he was a little devil and why what he had told me about him, I confirmed.

I went down the corridor, which was already empty until I found my locker, 256, I took the books I needed, not the class ones, if not, real books, there I kept some, this time I had chosen one of John Green, paper cities, I'd read it tonight

I closed my locker and ran into Jackson, I gave him a hateful look.

—Have you followed me? —I dictated

—Yes I do. —I didn't expect him to admit it, but he did.

—Look —I sentenced—. You may go around with your angel face and innocent smile. But you don't fool me. —There was a silence in which we both looked at each other, both trying to discover something that the other was hiding, both analyzing each other carefully. Finally, he broke the silence with an unexpected phrase:

—I'm going to have a lot of fun with you. —He smiled and left
