"Kairan: Surviving in the Modern World" CHAPTER 1

'huff huff huff'

Where should I hide? The whole palace was surrounded by imperial soldiers and some parts of it even were on fire. How dare that old man send his military force just to kill me? What did I even do? Did I disappoint him? Dishonor him? I was living in this abandoned place with two maids without giving him any sign that I was still alive.

"I can see drops of blood! She went this way!"

Shit!

He neglected me for 20 years and now he dared to show his affection by killing me? If I get out of here alive I'll make sure that next time we see each other that will be your downfall, Kyros.

"I need to hide."

I whisper to myself, where? where? 'huff huff huff' I saw an open door and immediately ran through it. I entered the kitchen but I couldn't see anything. It was too dark here, I held onto the wall so I could walk a little further.

"The drops of blood stop here! Open the door immediately!"

When I heard them, I covered my mouth to stop making noises and slowly slid down. I start panicking when they finally open the door.

"We need to find Princess Kairan in the emperor's order, scattering around the palace! Dead or alive will be fine!"

That voice—I already heard that before.

That damn king will use me to cover up his shits to make his profile better. Last week I heard some rumors that young males at age of ten to twelve are gone missing and a lot of them was bought from human shop, reporters and paparazzi sources said that it is a guy with a high social standing and the same guy who buys to them every month, some theories specially by the commoners think that it is the emperors, before he became king he was known for committing crimes such as pedophile, adultery, child trafficking and child abuse. By hearing that and thinking how disgusting that his filthy blood is the same blood of mine, that it is flowing within my veins. Disgusting!

'ack!'

I come back to my senses when I touch something sharp that makes my hand bleed 'it was a knife' I immediately grab it and keep slowly back to crawling on the floor to avoid the knight that is still searching for me, it's great that the kitchen is too dark to see me.

I hide under the table when they start going in the direction where I am, when they pass through I start to run slowly and hide between the gap of the wall and a wooden cabinet of plates.

"Kitchen is clear!"

"Set it on fire"

I freaked out when I heard that. They start throwing flammable liquids and set the whole kitchen on fire. I tried to cover my nose but it's useless. Smoke and fire spread fast and wide because of the wind coming from the window that remained open.

The door of the kitchen is totally burning on fire. ``I need to get away from here.' I tried to inhale to calm myself but that was the wrong, insanely wrong thing to do.

'cough cough'

I'm such an idiot.

'Ugh!' It's getting hot here. I need to escape. I looked at my burning surroundings and the window was the only option that I have. I start stepping on a rock made sink to reach the window. It has wires that are used to prevent insects from coming in, but fortunately I got a knife so I cut it. I wish that I could be  in this tiny window.

When I finally cut the wires I start planning how I could fit myself in this tiny hole, while staring at it I heard a cracking noise from the burning woods and it starts to fall off to the ground, I start to panic again and immediately fit my head to the window but I pull it out again because my shoulders cannot go through to it. I tried again but this time I started with my arms and put pressure from my feet and kept pushing, successfully I fit half of my body outside.

"Search around! If the Princess was able to escape she's probably not that far, START SEARCHING!"

'What the?! I'm not yet outside but you guys are already here to search? Give me a break!'

I struggle but this time I use my arms and put pressure on the wall when I suddenly feel someone's pushing me from the inside.

"Princess, you should survive no matter what"

That voice....

"Sarah!"

She's still alive!

"Princess Kairan, thank you for being our friend Sophie and I we're happy to be your lady-in-waiting, and to serve a fine lady like you so please Princess, please survive. You must survive for us"

Hearing that Sarah makes me want to cry. I wish I could go back inside and hug her but Sarah suddenly pushed for me to fall outside of the kitchen. I immediately stand and look inside to see Sarah. She's smiling at me as if she didn't feel any pain and that makes me cry louder. She has burns on her face, her arms are bleeding, her clothes are dirty and her hair is horrible messy, her head is bleeding too and her eyes swollen.

I covered my mouth in disbelief, how horrible Sarah is, looking at her wounds, what pain she's going through but she still manages to push me just to get outside.

"Sarah?"

Tears start flowing, my hands are shaking.

"Sophie?"

"I'll be with her in a moment"

And smile again.

I can't think, I'm confused, panicking, and afraid but I am more mad.

"Kairan, listen, run never turns back never look back"

"But Sarah—I cannot leave you here! Let's go! Let's go far away from here hmm—let's find Sophie first and then escape!"

I tried to reach her from outside but I couldn't, she just remained standing and didn't move even just to hold my hands.

"Sarah! Don't leave me. I don't want to be alone anymore!"

I cried and begged her to go with me but Sarah just smiled at me and said.

"Survive"

"Now run!"

I flinch in surprise when she suddenly yells, that makes me run non stop while I cry my heart out, Sarah, Sophie I'm sorry I wasn't able to save you. The time I reached the forest at the back of the palace I slowly stopped running and started to walk while crying. I can't see my surroundings clearly so I decided to stop and sit down on one of the trees and rest a little bit to clear my mind.

From now on my goal is to survive, so I stand up and start to run again until I can't move my feet anymore. I ran this far. I can see the capitol from here. I hope someone can help me, or no one recognizes my face and that's enough for me to survive.

The sun is starting to rise and shine, after a quick break I start my journey again and sure 'ack!'

What is this? It hurts and it's hot. I touch where the pain comes from and when I look into my hand, it's covered with red liquid and it is warm.

"Blood huh"

I just wanted to survive. I didn't do anything wrong. I don't even have a chance to interact with others, especially from outside of the palace. Sarah told me to survive and now I am dying? Once again I touch the arrow that gets straight into my body and exactly stabs my heart. Now I can tell, I can count my heart beat slowly fading away. I lost strength from my legs and kneel down on the edge of a cliff. I can't do anything except from staring at the sun that is slowly setting to shine. 'What a beautiful time and place to die' and smile bitterly.

"Sarah, Sophie, I'm sorry I didn't survive like your wish"

Then I felt something or someone touching my back.

"You're not belong in this world."

The voice of man filled my ears a polite and gentle tone after saying that he gently pushed me and said--

"Have a safe trip"

I don't have any courage and energy to look at the person who did this to me but for sure he's a guy with a soft gentle and sweet voice. I closed my eyes and waited for me to fall to the ground or to take my last breath but none of those happened.

I just can't open my eyes, and this darkness and emptiness is suffocating me.
