19 Demon Speed

Zhou Wen was already familiar with the DNA extraction procedure from his past experience. It was not challenging for him at all. 

When he was dousing the mouse's bone, he added a trace amount of dilution to the low penetrant solution to reduce the concentration level of the penetrant. This way, he could acquire DNA stands of a higher concentration level. 

This was the result achieved through the experiments he conducted recently. 

The low penetrant solution's concentration was a factor that influenced the results. However, the rest of the factors, such as techniques, temperature, and contamination control methods, would also improve the outcome, of course. 

By half-past eleven in the morning, Zhou Wen had already immobilized the DNA and was prepared to load it to the glass slide for electron microscope observation. 

The entire process lasted one and a half hours and was as smooth as cruising through water. He worked efficiently and even faster than the experienced laboratory technicians downstairs in the research center. 

It was an eye-opening experience for the few colleagues that were observing him secretly from the side. 

Every one of them was capable of performing electron microscope observation, but every step of the way was carried out cautiously in fear of contamination and mistake. They could never do it as elegantly as him. It felt as if he could see the DNA. 

There could only be two results from this situation. 

He was either idiotic or awesome. 

They would only find out which type he was after the electron microscope observation was carried out. 

It was precisely around this time when Wu Yan came over to ask everybody out for lunch. 

"How are you doing there?"

"Hmm. I'll be running an electrophoresis analysis in the afternoon."

Wu Yan took a glance at the centrifuge and said in astonishment, "You're done immobilizing the DNA?"

Zhou Wen nodded and said, "Hmm."

Wu Yan was speechless. 

It had only been half an hour. What sort of demon speed was that?

Wu Yan continued, "Come; let's go for lunch."

After all, she could only validate it after the result was produced in the afternoon. Hence, they exited the building. Wu Yan passed a white access card to Zhou Wen. "Here; this is a temporary access card. You can use it first, and I'll give you an official access card when you've completed the employment procedures later on."

"Thanks…" Zhou Wen received the card and took a glance at it. He found the words 'affiliated hospital' and also 'temporary access card' on the back of the card and a code number at the bottom. 

Wu Yan added, "As for accommodation, would it be alright for you to take care of that by yourself temporarily? We will make arrangements for your accommodation when we're done settling your contract, or you can opt for the rental allowance too."

Zhou Wen was well aware that the issue of accommodation would be discussed later after the employment contract was signed. He nodded and said, "Hmm, sure."

They chatted for a while before Wei Zhaogong, who accompanied them, took the initiative to ask, "Where are you from?"

Zhou Wen answered, "Jiangdu District."

Wei Zhaogong said in surprise, "Oh, you're from Jiangdu District, huh. No wonder your accent sounds so familiar. Heh-heh, I'm from Taixing city. It is very close to your hometown."

"Hmm, that's right. Only about 50 to 60 kilometers apart."

"How old are you?"

"22; and you?"

"I'm 24. You're only 22, huh, you don't look your age…"

They chatted all the way until they reached the staff canteen in the hospital located in the inpatient department building in the east wing. 

The meals served in the First People's Hospital were rather impressive, with all sorts of dishes in great varieties. 

"Your hospital's meals are quite impressive, huh."

Wu Yan laughed as she replied, "It's still slightly worse as compared to the university."

"I think that it's fine. Could it be that I'm favoring the new over the old because I had too many meals in the university?"

"I still think about the campus' cafeteria frequently, even till now…"

After ordering his meal, Zhou Wen held the plastic food tray and joined Xu Jiajia and the rest to head to their table.

He took a glance at his surroundings and found young nurses dressed in white dresses around him. They were bright, vivacious, and young. Furthermore, they were chuckling adorably akin to little hens. It made the single man, Zhou Wen, feel like going for a date with them. 

However, he was aware that these little nurses were all cunning foxes. If one did not have the capability to own and drive a BMW car, one would have utterly no chance at pursuing them. 

Meanwhile, the meal lasted for about 20 minutes. 

They had over an hour's time to rest after lunch because the laboratory department's operating hour began at 1:30. 

Since he had nothing else to do, Zhou Wen strolled around in the hospital with Wei Zhaogong accompanying him. 

When they arrived at the administrative building, they stood next to the foot of a wall. Wei Zhaogong procured a pack of Suyan cigarettes from his pocket and beckoned to Zhou Wen. 

Zhou Wen pulled out a stick conveniently and took out the lighter from his pocket to light Wei Zhaogong's cigarette first, followed by his own. 

Wei Zhaogong said, "How long have you been smoking?"

Zhou Wen replied, "Five years. I picked it up when I was in my junior year."

"Then I'm earlier than you. I started smoking in my freshman year."

Wei Zhaogong took a drag, and then he said, "I had just gotten into high school at the time. In order to integrate into the social groups as soon as possible, I took a cigarette every time someone passed me one. Who would have known that I would get addicted just like that."

"Heh-heh, I had almost the same experience…"

Wei Zhaogong chatted about his life in high school for a while longer, then, he looked toward the building on the west and said, "That's the dormitory for the hospital's official employees behind us. Jiang Hexuan and I are staying in that building in the north. I think you will be staying there too, later on."

"Are you and Jiang Hexuan a couple?"

"Hmm, we were university mates."

"Oh…"

Wei Zhaogong asked, "I see that Leader Wu cares about you quite a lot. Are both of you acquaintances from the university?"

"No." Zhou Wen laughed and shook his head. Then, he asked, "I thought the team leader was Zhang Shuguang? Why are you still addressing her as the leader?"

Wei Zhaogong chuckled and answered, "Leader Zhang is busy with his research. He takes part in academic discussions and research while also handling matters in the hospital. He doesn't have the time to manage the PCR team at all, so Wu Yan is the person-in-charge of managing it. So…"

"Ah, I see…" Zhou Wen nodded smilingly. 

They were just acquainted with one another, after all. It was impossible for them to have a hearty talk now. 

They chatted for a while about these insignificant and casual topics for Zhou Wen to gain a simple understanding of the hospital's situation; then, he returned to the laboratory department. 

The vast majority of the people working in the laboratory building had yet to return. There was just a small portion of people performing experiments. 

Zhou Wen began to bustle about immediately upon returning to the laboratory. 

He performed the electron microscope observation, and it was perfect. Soon afterward, he began the electrophoresis analysis. 

In order to examine the concentration level of the DNA, one must run an electrophoresis analysis because the electron microscope observation could not pick up the concentration level of the DNA. 

Just as Zhou Wen was about to mix the gel, Wei Zhaogong, Jiang Hexuan, Dong Wenying, and also Xu Jiajia each went over to the electron microscope and took a glance in succession. Every one of them had an astonished expression on their faces when they left. 

They could not figure out how Zhou Wen could possibly succeed with the extraction process at such a speed. 

"It was really awesome…"

At a quarter past two, Wu Yan and Zhang Shuguang came over together. 

Zhang Shuguang's eyes lit up when he saw the glass slide placed on the electron microscope stage. 

"It's done already?"

Zhou Wen nodded. "Hmm."

Wu Yan said smilingly from the side, "The immobilization was completed at half-past 11."

"Oh, really?" Zhang Shuguang was surprised once again. He thought to himself, 'What an amazing speed.'

He walked to the electron microscope and observed it for a moment to see the ultra-clear DNA strands. 

Zhang Shuguang cracked into a smile. He had not misjudged the person, just as expected. 

Zhou Wen had just finished mixing the electrophoresis gel at the time. Then, he proceeded with the blowout, centrifugation, and poured the agarose gel into the electrophoresis equipment and began the gel electrophoresis. 

Next, it was the waiting time. 

Zhang Shuguang waited for him to finish bustling about before he smiled and said, "Take a sample and follow me."

Zhou Wen pulled out a tube of white mouse DNA from the centrifuge and placed it into an icebox before he followed Zhang Shuguang out of the laboratory. 

They had just left the room when Xu Jiajia tugged at Wu Yan from behind and asked, "Oh, Leader Wu, what's going on with this Zhou Wen actually?"

"What do you mean by what's going on? It's just a normal practical test for an interview."

"That's not right. If this is an ordinary practical test for an interview, is it necessary for a team leader like Leader Zhang to give him personal attention? When I came here last year, Leader Zhang had not made an appearance from the start to the end."

"Heh-heh…"

Wu Yan smiled and noticed that everybody was looking at her eagerly other than Xu Jiajia. She considered the situation, and since everybody would find out about it eventually, she laughed and said, "He is slightly different than all of you. You are hired on a contract basis. He is hired on a permanent basis, and that is why Leader Zhang needs to give personal attention to him."

Xu Jiajia gasped in astonishment and said, "What? He is a formal employee?"

The rest of the people in the laboratory had a stunned expression on their faces as well. 

No wonder Zhang Shuguang paid more attention to him. So it turned out that it was a formal employee interview, huh. 

Even though the rest of the people did not comment further, their hearts were filled with jealousy and admiration. 

They were all workers, but Zhou Wen was hired as a formal employee despite just being recently employed. On the other hand, they spent every day performing experiments and tests with painstaking effort, yet they were only contract workers. The disparity between them was pulled further at once. 

By the time they could really work their way into the organization, perhaps Zhou Wen would already be a hospital director. 

Wu Yan noticed their unusual expressions and figured out what was on their minds. She chuckled and said, "Zhou Wen is brought in as a talent. As a result, he receives special treatment. Don't try to come up with wild guesses, everyone."

Upon hearing Wu Yan's remarks, Xu Jiajia and the others suddenly remembered Zhou Wen's performance in the DNA extraction. They were suddenly enlightened. 

They could accept a talent like this to be given a formal position. Nevertheless, they could not help but feel a little envy as soon as they thought about how Zhou Wen was hired as a formal employee immediately while they were still far from him despite working here for a year.
