Off Grid

I woke to the sound of the rustling of pages and a slight breeze. I would never leave my window open and my mother knew not to disturb me. I pushed my eyes shut. "It's just a bad dream," I thought to myself.

I heard a loud squeak coming from my chair. There was no way this could have been a bad dream. My boyfriend must be here. I opened one eye, just to make sure he didn't see me awake. To my surprise, it wasn't him. It was my old crush, Luke Hemming. No, not the band member Luke Hemming?

"I see you are awake now," he says in a deep tone, "Uhm, I read your diary from a few years ago, sorry."

"What are you doing here?" I screeched, "I have a boyfriend."

"Oh cut the shit," he groaned, "Layla, we all know he's a dickhead."

I rolled my eyes.

"It looks like you had the hots for me," he giggled.

"What are you here for?" I groaned, making him shut up.

"We are going off the grid!" he said.

"What?" I yelled, "said who?"

"Says your mom, me, and cotillion?" He said, his voice rising when he said cotillion, "do you remember that one time I told you I was taking you somewhere special when we get older?"

"Uhm," I stuttered, "yeah?"

"I felt bad that I never took you," he sighed, "besides your mother packed your bag last night!"

"But what about Greyson!" I yelled.

"As I said, a dickhead," he said, then lowered his tone and turned away, "and he sure as hell doesn't deserve you."

I ignored the last part. As much as I loved him in the past, I couldn't just go behind Greyson's back.

"Just-," Luke sighed, "just turn off your location and say you are on a business trip with your mom."

"Ugh," I give in, "I'll go."

"Great, let's go!" He said, "Just try to lighten up?"

I smiled and sighed at the same time, trying to look offended and answer his commands. He led me to his convertible.

"It's about a two hour drive but I think it's worth it," Luke says, opening the car door for me.

"I think I'll make it," I giggled.

I'm starting to remember why I liked him. He was always so caring, and I always thought he liked me. I mean he used to buy me chocolates. I never had the strength to tell him my feelings.

Once he started the car, he began talking about how this summer was going to be different. However, he never told me why.

"So," he said in a tone where his voice went up and down, "do you still like me?"

"Luke," I stared into his deep blue eyes, "I liked you. You can't just sweep me off of my feet whenever you want to. It's not my fault you waited too long."

"Well," he sighed, "it's not my fault you never told me."

It was true. I never told him, it was my fault.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"No no it's fine," he said trying to comfort me, "it doesn't matter."

He always tried to make me seem on top of the world. That didn't give me the right to throw him under the bus though.

"I'm sorry," I leaned in and hugged him. He patted me on the back. I let him see my soft side.
