3 year old Kira

October, 14 @ 23:16

"Mommy! Mommy!" Kira yells from the back where she is fastened in her baby seat.

"Yes, Kira?" her mom looks up from her tablet.

"Are we there yet?"

"No, Kira. It's still a long way from here."

"Okay Mommy," she pauses for three seconds. Then takes in a deep breath and opens her mouth. "Daddy! Daddy!"

"Yes, sweetheart?" her father looks at her through the rear view mirror with a huge smile.

"Are we there yet?" He chuckles slightly.

"Yes, sweetheart. But we still have a long way ahead of us."

"Okay," she breaths out, a little disappointed.

She keeps quiet and sucks on her pinkie, occasionally drawing a line or two with crayon on the paper sitting on her lap. The rain has became heavier and the roads are slippery. Most cars have stopped at nearby inns, motels, hotels, guest houses and anywhere else they can find shelter while they wait for the thunderstorm to calm down.

Kira's mom is showing her dad something on her journalism tablet, making her dad momentarily take his eyes off the road to look. When Kira looks up from her drawings, her eyes widen and she starts crying again.

"Mommy!" she exclaims.

"Hold on, sweetie," her mom waves her off, slightly irritated by now.

"Daddy!!" she's panicking and breathing heavily. He glances at her and smiles warmly. She points at the windscreen and dad turn to look. Yellow and white headlights immediately blind them as a car is slammed into theirs.

They had little to no time to swerve away from it. Her mom screams as glass pierces her skin and her dad's head hits hard against the wheel. More tyres screeching and cars honking is all Kira hears before she feels her baby seat yanked loose and everything turns dark for her.
