After a few more study sessions, Edison came up with his own plan. “I vow to remain celibate until I pass a sample test.” He raised a hand to make the pledge, there in Stone’s living room the second night of the second week of classes.

“Really?”

“Yes. Really…if you’re on board.”

“If you think it’s helpful, I’m on board,” Stone said. “I’ll do anything to support you.”

Frustration grew over their next few nights together. Edison stared expectantly as Stone went over his answers after the next practice exam. “No. Sorry.”

“Son of a fuck!”

“Close…closer than last week.”

“Fuck.”

“Can I hug you?” Stone asked. “What about kisses?”

“Always. I don’t get it,” Edison said against the side of Stone’s neck. “My head gets all jumbled when I read it. Sometimes I know the right answer, though, but I talk myself out of it.”

“Let’s walk. We’ll practice parts of speech. We’ll walk quickly.”

“Adverb.”

“And look at pretty flowers along the way.”
