1 Chapter 1

"Another attack happened just moments ago. It feels like this has been starting to become a common trend the past couple of weeks and no one can seem to figure out why." A news anchor spoke as a man stood there watching. He had just gotten out of work and he seemed pretty tired. He watched as the rain started to pour in wondering why it seemed like life just wasn't going his way. He felt a weight on his shoulder that made him stand up hunched over. Though if you ever asked him why he stands weird he probably wouldn't tell you. "Police are now saying that if you go outside into the city then you should be extra careful because by the looks of it, it doesn't seem like the attacks will be ending soon." The news anchor continued. The man took a deep breath as he noticed a mother walking at his side with her young. She looked tired and willing to do anything to make the boy stop talking. Though whenever the man looked in their direction she gave a look of distrust towards him.

"Mommy, was there ever a time where there weren't such a thing of people with super powers?'' The boy asked his mother as she held his hand tight. "Oh sweetie, I wish I could tell you the answer, but mommy wasn't alive that long." The mother answered. "Actually, there was a time where there was no such thing as a super powered human. A time where the idea of having super powers was something told in books and movies." The man answered the boy's question for the mother. "Um… excuse me. Who are you exactly?" The mother asked the man as he showed a little bit of regret on his face. "Um… Oh yeah, sorry for butting in from out of nowhere, my name is Nekane Foreman. I was on my way home from work and couldn't help but overhear your conversations with your son. Would you mind if I continued?" Nekane asked the mother as he tried his best to give a smile that did not look forced. Though deep inside Nekane felt like he looked like the biggest idiot. "Sure, go ahead. You managed to pique my interest" The mother answered Nekane. It has been so long since the first ever super powered human appeared that most people didn't even think there was a time without them. Nekane though… He knew more than what others did.

"Right now you can see that there is a government that controls what happens around the world and every living thing follows it's command? Well it wasn't always that way. In fact, at one point there were multiple governments and each one of them ruled a certain area of land. All the governments lived in peace during this time and there was no such thing as someone who was super powered. For millions of years these governments managed to co-exist and help each other whenever it was needed. That was until each one of them started to form armies to defend themselves if there was to ever be a conflict between them. As each country saw the other grow in power they themselves built an army in power in fear that they would be taken over by the other. Distrust grew between all of them and soon grew into anger. War broke out between all of the countries resulting in millions dying. One of the governments in this war though was unprepared. It had grown to trust the other governments believing that no conflict would happen though when the war started between all of the governments they became the number one target for attack." Nekane said as the kid continued to listen. His eyes almost shined like stars as he started to get really invested into the story but the mother started to think Nekane was crazy. "What happened next?" The child asked as the rain started to pour in harder than before.

"Well the country started to draft their people into the army in an effort to protect the borders but deep inside the country knew that they would not be able to win the war the way things were going. Years into the war a man soon appeared in front of the leader of that country and told him of an idea. One of super powered humans that could go on the front lines of war and win them the war. The leader didn't believe him at first because his ideas sounded like the works of fiction coming out of a mad man, that is until the mad man had proved to the leader that his idea was indeed probable. He was shown a man with the strength to carry a car without the need for help. A man that could jump mountains without rest and even take a bullet from a gun. Out of desperation the leader gave the man the ability to create as many of these humans without the need to be held back by the law." Nekane continued his story. "Ok that is enough" The mother said as she stepped in fully believing that he was crazy. "So you're telling me that the super powered humans we see today were created? Please don't try to make those freaks sound like they are the victims. Do me a favor and leave me and my son alone before he starts to believe your made up stories." The mother continued as she started to walk into the rain.

Nekane lifted his head a little bit to take a deep breath. He started to think that he had bad luck talking to others and that he was probably going to end up being told by the police that he needed help or something. Any sign that they are taking the side of someone who is super powered usually ends up with you being told that your opinion isn't correct. The rain soon started to pour in a little harder as Nekane watched the holes in the road in front of him turn into puddles. "Looks like I ended up messing up again. Man, I hope I am able to walk to work again without being called an idiot again." Nekane told himself with disappointment. You see, Nekane himself didn't really believe the story either. It was the story that his mother would tell him when he was a little kid and he would carry it with him everywhere he went. It was his way of trying to believe that she was not crazy when it came to the past. The story continued in the most uneventful way possible that he just couldn't believe it to be real. "Before they could use the super powered humans in the war the governments ended up forming into one… I must be crazy to believe that it was even possible." Nekane told himself as he started to walk towards his house. His mother would always tell him that the mad man created a department for creating super powered humans with the government's money. Since the government gave him power to go above the law the man started to steal people from the streets and even started to take children from their own parents at times. Millions of powered humans were created. Before they could be used in the war though something ended up happening.

The governments formed into one body and peace soon came back to the world. In the process that department ended up getting disbanded without a second thought and all of the powered humans ended up getting sent back into society. Without their memories of course. Just like that the story just seemed like a rushed story in an effort to keep Nekane from asking about super powered humans and their origins. Nekane had nothing else to believe at this point though. As he continued to walk home from work he started to look at his reflection in the puddles and wondered about who he really was. Everyday he wakes up to the news talking about a new attack caused by a super powered human. "The new threat to humanity!" They would say. He just couldn't believe anything was real at that point. You see those humans that were sent back into society without their memories ended up rediscovering their powers. Though some of them tried to hide their powers fearing the idea of being feared while others ended up using it for bad. A huge spike in crimes started to happen and all of them were coming from people who you would only see in movies. As time went on people started to become fearful of people with powers. You can't really blame them because they really were powerless against them.

In response the government decided that something needed to be done about the situation. There was just one problem though. None of their weapons were truly able to turn the tide in their favor and the people with powers started to grow more powerful as they began to learn how to use their powers. That was when the madman's son reappeared from out of nowhere. Time had gone by at that point and the man died because he refused to stop testing on himself. His constant test on himself ended up being the very thing that would shorten his life but in his will he made his son's promise that he would advance his work. After plaguing his loyalty to the government the son rebuilt the department as the DPHC with the sole purpose that he would capture and test further on the powered humans that managed to escape. "What a weird story." Nekane told himself as he started to continue walking towards his home. As the rain started to pour harder, Nekane would continue to cover himself more and more. He hated the rain because he was not able to feel the drops of water without it shocking his skin. Everywhere Nekane looked he would see cameras watching the public every single day. "I wonder if being one of the people watching those cameras would be a good job." Nekane joked to himself knowing that it would be a death wish for him.

"Remember to always have your phones out in case of an attack and contact the DPHC." A voice on the microphone would say. Nekane was starting to walk up to a checkpoint set up by the DPHC. Thankfully there was no way of finding out if you were a powered human through DNA though Nekane always found it kind of scary going through them. The thought of being found out always scared him though he always had back up plans for escaping. "Oh Nekane, it's been a while." The man at the checkpoint said at the sight of Nekane. "Good to see you too. The usual?" Nekane asked with a tired face. "Sorry man. DPHC orders. Attacks have been starting to spike lately and they want to lower that number." The man told Nekane. Nekane was too tired of dealing with things at that point because of work. "Come on man. I know you are tired from work but don't make this harder for me too." The man said. Nekane without any choice went through with the test they did at the checkpoint. "The rain is pretty heavy today isn't it?" The man asked Nekane. Nekane, knowing how bad he was at having small talk, refused to answer him. "Hey you never told me but is there a reason you hate the rain?" The man continued to try and have small talk with Nekane. "I just don't like the rain." Nekane answered him as he kept his umbrella close to him. "You are so weird you know that right?" The man answered him. "Alright you are clear. You can go through." The man told Nekane.

Nakane not once did he let go of that umbrella almost as if it was his life line. He knew that it was the only thing between him getting discovered and staying hidden. Soon he walked past the checkpoint relieved because he knew that there weren't any checkpoints along the path. "$600 dollars… Man that really doesn't feel like a lot of money." Nekane told himself as he looked at his bank account. It was like his whole life was just passing by him and he was losing sight time. For him it felt like a lifetime before his life ended up changing but now it felt like days were going by with notice. Nekane put his jacket on tighter as the wind started to get stronger. He couldn't help but wonder why it felt like he was meant for something better in life then what he was doing. "Remember to call the DPHC in case of another attack." the microphones would continue to say it over and over again. He was starting to begin to hate the sound of the women's voice at that point because it was all he could hear up to that point. "Did you hear about the attack that happened a couple of days ago." Nekane heard a woman say. "Yeah. I heard that 28 people ended up dying in that attack. I wish that those freaks would just stop existing." Her friend told her. "Yeah the world would be a better place without them." The woman continued.

Nekane took a deep breath as he heard them speak. He started to think about how life would be if there was no such thing as a powered human. He was starting to wonder if it was better if they never ended up existing. Seems like there has been much on the mind of Nekane lately. To him it felt like all life was ever going to be, were questions and problems. "Why is it so cold now? Wasn't this cold a second ago?" Nekane told himself. That was when the sound of explosions started to be heard in the distance. Nekane took a second to think to himself because he didn't know what type of new power he would end up seeing now. For him it felt like everyday there was a new power on display. Though he always wanted to route for the person running away for their lives because he knew what would happen to them if they ended up getting caught. Though this time it felt different. He started to get a gut feeling that something was going to happen but didn't know what it was going to be. As the sound became louder he soon realized that the battle was going straight in his direction. "Ice?" Nekane told himself as he started to see a large pack of ice flying in his direction. The ground broke as the ice hit the ground. Nekane looked back to see the place where he was standing, thankful that he was able to move out of the way but as the dust settled he lost sight of time.

He watched as a beautiful woman with black hair and hazel eyes walked out of the dust where the ground had exploded. The woman was badly injured at that point and looked like she was on the verge of death. Still Nekane didn't move a muscle because if he helped her in any way it would end with him getting into some serious trouble. He couldn't help but notice that wherever she walked the rain would turn into snow and leave a beautiful design. Almost like snowflakes. Nekane couldn't help but look at how beautiful her power was. It was almost as if everything she touched turned into something beautiful. Before he could finish though the DPHC managed to catch up to her. "Are you done yet? If this continues it would only end up with you dying." A man with dark brown hair and brown eyes said he started to walk closer to her. "You will never get me without a fight. You took everything away from me and I am going to make you pay Curt Meyers!" The woman said as the rain started to convert into ice right before the eyes of Nekane. "You can't beat me." Curt told her as he walked closer to her. You could tell that the fight was one sider from the look of her but with just one look at her eyes Nekane knew that she was not going down without a fight.

Deep inside Nekane wanted to help from her situation but he knew that he would lose his normal life. Though he knew that the only reason why he was starting to get the feeling of helping was because she was pretty. Still he found it harder to help others than to help himself. Though he felt ashamed at the sight of her. Looking at her he knew that she was stronger than him in any way if you took out super powers from the picture and he was quick to admit that to himself. The thing is though no matter how much he managed to admit it to himself he could never find the strength to do something about it. "What new trick are you going to pull out of your sleeve now?" Curt said in a cocky tone. He started to punch the ground to create large chunks of rocks and threw them towards the woman in an attempt to end the fight but every time she would manage to freeze them and break them apart as they turned into ice. "You can't do this forever." Curt yelled, letting his guard down for a quick second. The second then threw his guard down; she managed to take advantage of the situation using the rain behind him to create large sets of ice. She somehow managed to hit him, sending him flying through multiple buildings. Nekane couldn't believe that she had somehow managed to build up that much ice in the state she was. Even being smart enough to start using the rain behind him and waiting for him to get cocky. The hit from the ice even ended up throwing curt through 3 buildings. "That barely tickled!" Curt yelled as he started to get up from the wreckage. The hit managed to hurt him pretty badly though his pride refused to admit it. Nekane watched as the girl tried to build up enough energy to escape her situation.

Every time she built up ice to hold her up though, whenever she tried to stand it would end up breaking apart. She could only do as much as her mind let her do after all and she was running on empty from the long battle she just had. Nekane started to notice the rain around her slowly stopped turning into snow as she fell down crying realizing that she held no way of getting up. The same could be said about Curt though because by the time he ended up catching up to her he ended up falling down on his knees. "How could someone like you end up finding a way to make me fall on my knees?" Curt said angry that he was dealt such a heavy blow. "That's why I tell you to stop being so Cocky." I heard a woman's voice say as she started to walk towards the man. "Shut up Brona, I had it under control." Curt answered her. "Brona? Curt? I feel like I have heard of these names before." Nekane started to whisper to himself. It was a long time ago but somewhere inside his memory he started to realize just who was in front of him. Brona Monet and Curt Meyers. The right and left hand of DPHC. The two people were hand picked by the man who took everything away from him. "There Brona. I don't want you two having another fight while I am around. Settle things when I am not around." An old man's voice soon started to come up behind the two. "I'll make you pay!" Nekane started to get angrier when the realization finally came full course.

"Lock her up." The old man told Brona and Curt. Nekane couldn't contain his anger, as the memories of the day that ruined his life started to flow through his mind. Rage unlike any he has ever felt before and pain there he knew so well. Nekane didn't care if his life would end up changing again for the worse he just wanted that man to pay. He had to pay. The man who's name was… "Thane Whitlock you will pay!!!!!!" Nekane yelled as he jumped up into the air. He didn't care if the rain would shock him; he just wanted Thane dead. With all of the energy Nekane could build up he ended up launching the largest attack he could possibly launch. An attack that he had been practicing if this moment ever came. An attack made just for Thane. "Lighting strike" Nekane yelled as he managed to hit Thane with an attack that had the power to destroy the entire road at him. Dust soon covered the entire street as Nekane started to realize what he had done. The buildings around him ended up getting destroyed, killing thousands. He looked around to see every single screen around him with the same title. "Super powered humans kill thousands." Nekane couldn't believe that he had given up his easy life for a cheap attack.

"Electricity. That is a powerful ability." Nekane couldn't believe his eyes. Thane was barely injured by that attack. "It's my turn." Thane says as he starts to run towards Nekane. "Doomsday day punch!" Thane screamed as he prepared an attack. Nekane without any time to think blocked it with a shield made of electricity. The punch ended up sending Nekane flying into the building behind him. "Everyone's tough until they are on the receiving end of a punch." Thane told him as he started laughing. "Now get up and receive your beating like a man." Thane started walking towards the direction where Nekane flew in an effort to capture Nekane but by the time he made it there Nekane had managed to find a way to escape. "Looks like your power has more tricks than just destruction. Curt go and handcuff that girl before she manages to get back up again." Thane told Curt as he started to think of ways to cover up that attack. "Um… Sorry boss but I took my eyes off of her and she managed to get away…" Curt said in a jokeful tone. "You idiot!" Brona told Curt knowing that Thane was not going to be happy with the mess that was created. "Don't worry Curt. They always end up coming back in the end. It will only be a matter of time." Thane said as he started to look away the area for clues on his powers.
