She eventually took the seat across from my desk and we sipped coffee together. Lilith had the day off or I would have sent her down to Cupcakes Seven, a bakery on Lasso Way, for some outstanding baked goods, not that Maddy, as Mrs. Shore liked to be called, would have eaten anything of the sort, perhaps strict about consuming sugars and carbohydrates, keeping tabs on her waist size.

The woman’s history was simple, although she wasn’t. Her mother owned a string of hospitals throughout Stockton County and parts of Kansas. Maddy was married to Dash Michael Shore, a somewhat famous iron sculptor who sold his pieces of art throughout the Mid-west. She had three babies at home, all girls, named after her aunts.
