8 Chapter 8

Day Two-10:24 a.m.

I curl up into a ball and cry because I don't know what will happen next. I need to run. But where to? The backyard. I get up and run through the kitchen and dining room to the door. I grab the handle and pull it open, breaking the little lock off. I step outside and close the door quietly so not to be noticed. Where could I hide? Tree? No, too obvious. Under the porch? I look under the porch, crowded with muck and a few hissing sounds,so a definite no. The shed?

I walk over to the small red, plastic shed. There is no padlock on it. I give it a slight shake and open the door. There is one small window on the right side of the shed. It's my only source of light, but it's filthy with several seasons worth of dust and dirt. As soon as I close the door I hear some yelling when the back door of the house opens. I crouch down, hoping they don't look in here. The footsteps are pronounced by the dry leaves on the ground. The only other sound is of my own breath and heartbeat.

" I'm going to chop that girl's head off if she's hiding." a voice mumbled. I assumed that no one was supposed to hear that... I quickly look around.

There are an ax and a chainsaw. Which one will she use on my head? I get up and look out the grimy window. There's no one there. I crack open the door and I make a run for it. I keep my eyes on the blood red door. I notice that a lot of it is Have they killed someone before? Will they do it again? Well, they'll only kill me if they can catch me. I head out the fence blistered old cherry wood fence.

Twenty feet outside the fence, I feel a jolt of electricity from my watch travel up my body into my brain. I see spots and I feel lightheaded. I trip over a big rock in the gravel. The sharpness of the rocks pierces my skin, just like Kerry's fingers. I don't know how long I laid there, but I feel another sharp pain wake me up, and this time it's not rocks, but cold fingernails. The same electric feeling tears through my body to get up. As soon as I'm up, I see them. The same deep blue eyes, the same freckles, and face as my mother. I wrap my hands around her warm body and tears come heavily like we haven't seen each other in years, even though it's been two days.

" We were so... so worried for you."

my mom wept.

I take everything in, her perfume, her shampoo. I look up and she looks like she hasn't gotten any sleep recently. The bags under her eyes accentuate the fine lines around her mouth and the corner of her eyes.

" How," I choked on emotion." how did you find me?"

" I was walking down the path you and me used to walk on Fridays when you were little. Then I saw a body laying down," she stuttered. " And... and it looked like you. I picked you up and you seemed lifeless with bruises, scratches, and chilled to the core. I.. I was actually beginning to think you were gone when I couldn't find your pulse. I laid you back down how I found you, then touched your shoulder, that's when you reacted."

"I'm just glad that you found me." I wailed. " I just want to go home and report them."

"Let's go do that."

We began to walk down the road back home when another wave of electricity made me collapse. I stumbled into my mom's arms. I wake up almost immediately.

" I'm sorry, Mom." I apologized.

" Don't apologize."

" Can we get this off. " I raise my left arm.

Her hand grasps around the band of it and miraculously breaks it. We find the off switch on it which was convenient for me being right under the watches face.
