4 Chapter 4

Day One-9:45 a.m.- Mr. Walter's basement

My head throbs and the sound of the phone ringing doesn't help. The phone...it's ringing. I run up the stairs, careful to skip the second step and put my ear on the door. The phone continues to ring. Two. Three. Fo...

"Hello," I recognize the staccato voice as Shyla's. " No, I haven't seen Adelyn since Friday at school."

I hear footsteps towards me, getting louder and louder. I dash down the stairs and hear the squeak of the second step. I throw myself on the floor and pretend to be unconscious. Seeing the light from the kitchen hurts my eyes and head.

" I'm sorry that I don't know where she is. My condolences." The first sentence from the other side is projected," What do you mean?"

Shyla responds with a quick, " Oh, all I meant is that I'm sorry that you haven't found her, that's all"

I quickly realized that she has a slight Boston accent. Shyla hangs up and walks down the stair.

" You know, you had it lucky. You knew your actual family." Shyla wailed as she walks over to me and kicks the toe of her Converse into my stomach. " It's your time now."

I remain as still as possible, but I'm not strong enough to hold myself down when Shyla dragged my body across the concrete floor. I'm dragged into a small corner under the stairs. Shyla drops my hands and I hear her steps go up the stairs with a door that was locked.

What have I done? Where do I go? I get my injured body up to look around. Where is a window? I look around and walk in the pitch black basement. I go up the stairs running my hand over both sides feeling for a light switch. All I feel on the walls is the bumps and falls of the drywall.
