2 In the Forest

Ch2. In the Forest

I woke up in the middle of a forest.

Ramiel is such a good bro, he even let me have the last clothing on me before I died. But yeah, it's only a white shirt with denim pants and construction boots. Oh, and also the class C helmet with the gloves.

[Congratulation on your successful reincarnation!]

[Installing the Crafting System ...]

[Please wait]

[System has been installed successfully.]

That's right, the system! I opened the system with a hand gesture and read it carefully.

[Crafting] |> Synthesize, Upgrade, Design.

A name huh? It was left unnamed, I wonder why. Did the system know that I want to sever any ties with my past life? Whatever ..., anyway, let's pick a name.

[Senjougahara Kou]

I'm not Japanese in my previous life and maybe in this life, but who cares.

The origin of that name, the surname was directly plagiarized from an anime. Precisely from my waifu, Senjougara Hitagi from Monogatari Series. But I think it's fitting. Ramiel said that this world is still in the ancient warring states of China. Senjougahara means 'battlefield' while Kou has the meaning of 'blessing' or 'happiness'. I'm a peaceful individual who wants just to find happiness in this war-like era.

Alright, stop at that. Thinking about it, it feels kinda cringe to me.

Let's talk about the crafting aspect of the system. The Crafting System was divided into three functions; Synthesize, Upgrade, and Design.

Synthesize is basically creating the stuff from the blueprint by providing it with the raw materials needed. The Upgrade just like its name is upgrading the item by sacrificing upgrading materials. Lastly, the Design is the function that I can use to design a blueprint and calculate the materials needed for it. There's a limit on how much I can design a blueprint though. I get a free design attempt every day. Leveling up grants me one attempt too.

I opened the synthesis and there's already some blueprint that I can craft right now. These blueprints are pickaxe, axe, hoe, shovel, and sword. Hmmm ..., this feels like Minecraft somehow.

I picked up a few fallen tree branches and some stones with my system and then crafted a stone axe with the Synthesize. I feel something has been reduced from my inside, but I don't know what that is.

[10 Mana, 2 <Stick>, and 3 <Stone> has been consumed.]

[You have successfully crafted a <Stone Axe>!]

[Gained 40 Exp.]

[You have successfully crafted your very first item! A reward has been added to your Inventory.]

I closed the notification prompt and opened the inventory. There's an additional item in it.

[Enchanted Talisman]: An enchanted artifact in the form of a forbidden tome.

[Stats]: +250 HP, +50 Magic Power, +20% Cooldown Reduction

[Unique]: <Mana Spring> "Regenerates 15% of Max Mana every 100s in total.",

<Magic Mastery> "Learning magic will be much easier, Cooldown Reduction cap increased by +5%."

[Durability] Unbreakable

[Materials]: Magic Necklace x1, Book of Sages x1, Tome of Evil x1

[Stone Axe]: Sharp tool useful for cutting wood.

[Stats]: +4 Attack

[Durability] 121/121

[Materials]: Stick x2, Stone x3

[Wooden Shack Blueprint]: A blueprint for a simple wooden shack for semi-permanent shelter.

I 'equipped' the Enchanted Talisman and the Stone Axe, and then used the blueprint. In the Crafting window, there was an additional tab, the Buildings tab. The material for building Wooden Shack comprises wood with a stone foundation.

I need to gather 30 units of wood and 12 stones. Hmmm ..., I wonder if there's a rocky cliff or stone quarry around here. Forget it, I'll explore more after I made a secure base.

Let's create more of these tools and upgrade 'em.

The upgrading material for the basic stone tools is simply their duplicate. Thus, I need to craft more of them for upgrading purposes. I proceed by gathering more materials for making these axes.

After thirty minutes of gathering material, I crafted a pair of the other tools and 2 more axes. I leveled up because of it. I felt incredibly weary though ..., maybe because I emptied my Mana, leveling up didn't restore all of my three bars. This level-up grants me three attribute points that I can appoint to my stats. And an increase in health, stamina, or mana. I could only choose to increase one of these three parameters by 10 points. I choose to increase my health point.

I sat down for about 10 minutes waiting for my mana pool to refill again before I start upgrading them.

[20 Mana and a <Stone Axe> have been consumed.]

[Upgrade Successful!]

[Congratulation! Your <Stone Axe> has become <Stone Axe +1>]

[Gained 50 Exp.]

[You have successfully upgraded an item for the first time! A reward has been added to your Inventory.]

After upgrading, the durability and the attack power of the Stone Axe have increased by a large number. The Durability becomes 190/190 and the Attack Power is now +12.

I upgrade the other tools and emptied my mana once again.

I spent twenty or so minutes for some rest before I think I can continue working. I start by cutting down trees with my axe. When I swung my axe on the tree bark, there was a red bar around the tree with some number.

[982/1.000]

Is this Tree's HP bar? So I can cut it down when the number reaches zero? But damn 18 HP only? How many times do I need to swing my axe until I cut down this tree?

Although I'm grumbling, I still did it anyway. Swinging the axe consume my Stamina by the way. It's one Stamina for every three swings. The durability of the stone axe is also decreasing. But only after ten or so hit that the durability is decrease by 1 point. I didn't count how many times I hit the tree, but based on the stamina consumption ..., I think it was around 50 or 60 hits.

Right at the time when the tree fell down, it disappeared into small fragments along with the root as a notification popped out.

[You have cut down a <Cypress Tree>!]

[Obtained <Cypress Wood> x5]

[Gained 100 Exp.]

So I need to cut six more trees to gather the necessary materials to craft the shack. But damn, all this physical activity made me hungry. I decided to comply with the demand of my belly as I descended this forested hill.

I don't know much about the forest ecosystem, but one thing that I know is ..., this place doesn't seem to be a rainforest. This means getting transmigrated into a near-equatorial region just like how I was born in my past life is nearly improbable. Well, still need to be careful in case I met a tiger or some wild dogs around here. I grabbed some fruits along the way, lucky there's a peach and apple tree around here, monkey too.

I found it ..., after walking for about an hour. I spotted a river. When there is water, there's life.

I quickly descended the slope and drank a mouthful of greenish river water. I overcome my fear of drinking unhealthy water because of my thirst.

"Ahhh ..." this is life. I feel so alive.

After filling my stomach with clear river water and fruits, I then started cutting down some trees nearby the river. There are also few rocks in this shallow river stream and the area is relatively flat too. This place seems like a perfect place to make the shack.

I cut down five more cypress trees, completing the quota needed for construction.

I then started collecting the stones. I learned something about the materials collection of my crafting system. I can directly collect an object that I could lift with my hands, but for bigger things that I'm incapable of lifting, I need to use my tools to somehow 'collect' it. Just like how I cut down the trees until they fell down, I need to mine the stone with my pickaxe.

On the river shore, there're only boulders scattered about. I used my pickaxe and started swinging it to reduce its size. Or rather, to reduce its durability to zero.

[1.491/1.500]

Yeah, this gonna take a while I'm sure of it. I keep swinging my pickaxe on the big boulder. Doing this repetitive task didn't bother me in the slightest, I'm used to it and that's how I survived in my previous life.

It took 45 minutes until I hit the rock to death, I mean destroyed. It crumbles and scattered into smaller parts and the system collected them for me.

[You have mined a <River Rock>]

[Obtained <Stones> x10]

[Gained 150 Exp.]

Well, I still have other smaller stones with me so with this I can finally build my shack.

I operated the crafting system and ordered the synthesis of the Wooden Shack building. The process was not instantaneous just like crafting a tool, still ..., it's pretty quick because it only need 5 minutes to make it.

In the meantime, while waiting for the process to complete I sat down in one big rock. I thought on how would I live in this world.

I had little to no knowledge whatsoever about this world. Where the hell is this place? Ramiel said that it was nearby the main character of this world. However, I had no idea where is that! I guess I should go away from this forest and interact with the native of this place to know about that.

Then, if this really in ancient times I need to be wary of war and conflict. It said that this is the warring states period. The warring states period that I know is about Sengoku Jidai in Japan. But the term 'warring states' means danger, it was a season of turmoil with wars going on.

I should really avoid getting dragged into this meaningless conflict. They were using a cold weapon for murder. While it was not as effective as a hot weapon, but it would be incredibly painful.

I died because of the rain of rebars, it pierced through my body and I could still remember how that feels. It would not be funny if I incite a conflict with the local populaces and then get whacked by some sword or spear, or get my body shot by a rain of arrows.

[60 Mana, 30 <Cypress Wood>, and 12 <Stones> has been consumed.]

[You have successfully crafted a <Wooden Shack>!]

[Gained 200 Exp.]

[Congratulation! You have leveled up! Level 2 >>3!]

[You have successfully crafted your very first building! A reward has been added to your Inventory.]

I choose to increase my mana this time. Enchanted Talisman didn't give me an increase in Mana pool, it just helps recover mana faster. And this artifact also gave me 250 HP which is a lot because my base HP right now is 110. Increasing my mana reserves means I can craft more stuff later on.

When I was wondering how to put the shack, the system helps me by making a holographic projection of the place where I want to put it. In some places, the hologram would turn red while in most cases it was green in color. I think red means I can't place it there, and green is possible.

I found a relatively flat surface and place my shack there. The placement of the building was done instantly with some sound effect of something heavy getting dropped.

[Wooden Shack]: Simple wooden shack for semi-permanent shelter.

[Unique]: <Tiny bit of Comfort> "Sleeping for 4 hours will restore health, stamina, and mana."

[Durability] 2.100/2.100

[Materials]: Wood x30, Stone x12

The dimension of the wooden shack is 3 x 6 meter. With only one sliding door as the entrance and two windows on both sides. All of it were made out of wood, even the roof.

I entered the shack and the inside was empty without any furniture. The floor was made of wooden tile, but at the center of it were stone slabs that is arranged to make a fireplace. A dual-layer terraced roof on the ceiling provides natural light and ventilation.

Well ..., let's call it a day and take a rest. It's getting dark outside.
