The Girl

IT WAS A COLD EERIE DAY. I woke up in the middle of the night panting.

This dream I just had is reoccurring, despite this though I always end up gasping for air. The reason for this is still unknown, I always see the same tree in my dreams. As I checked my watch the realization hit me, its already 3AM. "Oh shoot it's already way past midnight." I said to myself. I looked upon my window and saw the tree that constantly reoccur in my dreams. The moon light completely illuminated the tree as cold gusts of air make its way through my window. I should close this window since it's freezing.

As I closed the window I suddenly saw a mysterious silhouette behind the tree. I thought I was just hallucinating and figured I should just leave it alone. As I layed down on my bed facing my bedroom door, I suddenly felt shivers down my spine. When I looked back at the window it was wide open.

For a moment I was in disbelief considering I just closed it a while ago. But I just ignored it, closed it again but this time I made sure to lock it. Nothing happened after that incident.

Finally, morning rose as my alarm clock rings.

I stood up facing the window until, I realised the window I locked last night was wide open.

I shook it off as I went down stairs. When I reached the hallway I realised how silent the house is. Has it always been like this? "Well not since dad left." I thought to myself. I made my way through the kitchen as i saw a note pinned on the fridge.

'I'll be back by evening, I'm buying some groceries. Help yourself for some cereal its on the fridge. xoxo mom'

No wonder why it was quiet. I checked the calendar and noticed that today is Saturday and I have nothing planned, So I made the obvious choice to satisfy my appetite with the cereal my mom prepared for me. I then decided to watch the news. When I turned on the television, the lights suddenly turned off. I thought for sure it was another black out, because it wasn't rare for our town to have black outs now and then, but I realised the television is still on. I looked behind me and I realised someone was there. Someone I didn't recognise. Before I could react the stranger hit me with a baseball bat, and I lost consciousness.

When I slowly gained consciousness I heard the cries of my mom calling for help. "Yes! The guy who broke in escaped! Please come right away! My son is terribly injured his name is Lucas Maxfield! Were currently on Block 4 Oxford street! Please hurry!" As my mom's voice echoed throughout the room I cant help but notice the unfathomable pain I was in. My mom noticed I gained consciousness and she suddenly screamed. "Oh, Lucas! Thank god you woke up, are you okay?!"

"I'm okay mom don't think much about it." I responded.

"Dont worry honey! the ambulance is on the way!"

It.. Its fine mom, I can bear the pain.

"What do you mean you can bear the pain?! your face is filled with bruises!" She said with an overwhelming voice.

"What?" I gasped as I noticed the bruises all over my body. I then quickly searched for my phone, But when I did it was gone. "Darn it that guy must've took it." I muttered to myself.

"Are you okay honey? what are you searching for?" My mom asked with a concerned voice. "My phone, its gone. The guy who broke in must've took it." I quickly added.

Oh don't worry honey I have it, I used it to call the cops as I left mine at work. Here, take it.

She handed it to me reluctantly.

Give it to me mom, whats the hold up?

"I- its.. its your face, your completely unrecognisable. Are you sure you want to see your face?" she asked with a very fearful tone.

Yea, I Just want to see what you meant.

"I shouldn't have said that".. She mutters to herself as she handed it.

When I took my phone from her hands I noticed everything was numb and I couldn't feel anything. I then opened my camera and as I saw my face, I was confused and was in shock. My face was so bruised it was unrecognisable!

A few minutes later the ambulance came. I was then escorted to the vehicle. As the truck started moving, I looked through the window of the ambulance and noticed a familiar figure. Wait, wasn't that the one I saw last night? -I said indistinctively.

So the figure i saw last night wasn't a hallucination after all. And its.. No she's.. actually a girl.
