8 Chapter 8

I was setting up the ironing board when he came back into the room with a polite knock. “What’s going on there?”

“Just gonna pre-heat the iron.”

“Nothing worse than a wrinkled sandwich.”

“It’s like a panini maker,” I explained. “It does a pretty good job, too, if you keep an eye on it. Cheese gets good and melty…”

“No way.”

I nodded again. “It takes a second, but you’ll see.” I tore off a couple squares of aluminum foil and sat at the table with the sandwiches. “A Monte Cristo has ham and turkey on it,” I told him. “So we’ll just take the top bread off the turkey one and the bottom bread off the ham…you wanna take the lettuce out, too?”

“I guess, right? Otherwise won’t it get hot?”

“No lettuce.” I plucked a limp leaf from each, then mashed the two sandwiches together and began to wrap them up in foil as one.

“Wait, what about the jelly?”

“That’s more of a dip, I think.”

“It would be good, though.”
