“Is it weird to say you look really beautiful right now?” I asked.

He looked at me and laughed. “If I look half as thrashed as I feel, it’s probably weird for you to be thinking it,” he said. “But it’s a perfectly lovely thing to say.”

I smiled. “It’s true, is all.”

“Does it always take this long?” he groaned.

“You’re asking me?”

“Couldn’t you just reach in and pull it out?”

“I’m not sure that’s how it works.”

“Could ya try?”

“Um…” I looked at my hands. They’d never been anywhere near a vagina since they passed through one thirty-three years before. Would they fit inside? “Maybe we could callyour sister’s doc?” Saying which made me realize something we’d thus far overlooked. “Or your sister, even?”

“Oh dang. She still thinks I’m gonna try and make it to Arkansas. Hand me my phone, will ya?”
