The first thing I can remember is being held by my mother as she told me stories of our ancestors. I would fall asleep to the sound of her voice drifting to me on gentle waves of memories so vivid it was almost as if I was there. That was her gift you see to pass on memory pictures of the past. She was a Historian. A keeper of knowledge. I on the other hand was not. I was a Siren. To be more specific a Siren with the power of creation.
There are different kinds of gifts among the Merfolk and I was the rarest and most feared of all. Let me explain so you'll understand better what I mean.
The gifts among the Merfolk that are the most common are Soldier, Grower, and Tamer. The more rare ones are Historian, Seer, and Weather worker. The rarest and the most feared was the Siren.
Sirens were so feared because they not only could lure you in and compel you to do anything they wanted but they could also build cities with the power of their voice alone.
You may have heard the stories of the human sailors that where pulled by the sound of singing and were led to their death amongst the rocks of small Islands. That was only a small part of what they could do and even that was accidental. For Sirens had to practice singing somewhere and they couldn't do that practice under water as it would cause massive changes. Making tidal waves and land masses appear or disappear. With no fine control this would cause chaos. So Sirens practiced in the world of Air.
It used to be that Sirens were born once every 500 years or so and they were always female except one. The last one before me. He changed how Sirens were treated. Not in a good way but a bad one. Curse him. It is our costume to have the younger generation be taught by the oldest living member of that talent. I, because of him, have no one to teach me in the traditional way and if anyone but my family finds out what I am they will have me killed.
My Grandmother, bless her, was a Seer. She knew what I would be when I was growing in my mother. She also knew what would have to happen if I was to live. And she knew I had to live otherwise Merkind would disappear forever. Grandmother instructed Mother that I would need to grow up away from all merpeople in the ancient ruins of Siren City.
First let me tell you why this was so.
Mylor, curse him, was his name. That male Siren. Author of the Sirens destruction. He was the first male Siren to be born and something was twisted inside him. For he could not see the beauty in anything. He didn't have that need or drive to create with his voice. He only had the need to destroy and control. He hid it well for many years until he came into his full power. He was taught and trained like the rest of them but without the desire to nurture and cultivate growth of our people we were unknowingly training a monster, and in the end It took the entire nation of merkind to kill him. A lot of merfolk lost their lives that day. 86 of the 119 Cities were in ruins, the last being Siren City. The King made a proclamation shortly there after. Any Merperson born a Siren would be killed immediately, so this could never happen again. Grandmother said His Majesty meant to modify the order to exclude females but he died shortly after from the wounds received from the fight with Mylor the Cursed.
Siren City became a forbidden place and all the knowledge of them was taboo. Not even the historians were aloud to past on the knowledge of them except to other historians. I was born 1500 years or there about later. 3 Sirens born before me had been put to death. If I was to survive then Mother would have to leave before she took her teachers oath that would prevent her from giving the knowledge of Sirens to me and before I was born so know one would know what I was and kill me.
So Mother arranged to leave her city for another on the borders of the Abyss, but instead of going to Abyss City she went through the Abyss and toward the Siren Ruins. Everyone just thought that she had been attacked on the way and didn't make it. She almost didn't. For the Abyss holds monsters of the sea and if Grandmother hadn't told Mother exactly what to do she would not have gotten thou there alive.
So here I am, having grown up with only my mother for company and learning all that I can from my mother and practicing in the world of Air the best I can with the help of the Soul knowledge spheres found by my Mother in the depths of the ruins that only historians and Head of the Sirens, which with soon be me, Grand Mistress Siren.
What my Grandmother said about Sirens being needed is true. I found out today and it sent my head spinning. Which is why I'm out here laying on my favorite rock in the world of Air. Remembering those memories Mother gave me in the historian way.
Siren are needed not only because they can create cities and structures and whole gardens and safe zones for Merfolk but for the most important reason of all. They are the only ones who can sing vitality into the fertility plant needed for females to birth new young. Hence the reason my Grandmother was right. Sirens are needed.
