1 Chapter 1 : Misery

Ariel's POV

"Ariel it's time to wake up." My mom shakes me lightly.

I groan, putting my pillow over my face.

"Give me 10 more minutes mom. It's the weekend ." I grumpily say to her.

"Fine. Then don't blame me if I finish all of the chocolate chip pancakes." She says as she walks out of my room.

My eyes shot wide open. Did she just say chocolate chip pancakes? I dash out of my room as fast as I could. Making it to the kitchen, a stack of delicious chocolate chip pancakes were waiting for me. Of course like the lady I am I stuffed them into my mouth.

"Slow down Ariel you will get a stomach ache." My mother scolds me. But tries to hide her amused face.

I stick out my tongue at her and  stuffed my face with more delicious pancakes.

"So I was thinking that we should have a mother and daughter day." She says to me all excited. My mom sits right next to me and starts eating her pancakes.

"I would love to have a mother and daughter day. Where are we going?"

"Well I was thinking that we could go shopping and then get our nails done." She suggests.

"That sounds so much fun. Give me an hour to get ready and we will go."  Finishing my pancakes. I get up from my seat and went upstairs to take a shower.

After my shower I decided to wear a blue off the shoulder  top with white shorts and my white converse. I put my hair up in a ponytail and applied my makeup. Grabbed my purse, phone and shades before leaving my room.

When I make it down the stairs, I saw that my mom was all dressed. She looks from her phone and sees me.

"Ready to go?" My mother asks me. I nodded and we both left the house.

The mall...

My mom and I were walking around looking at different stores. As usual when we try on clothes we throw a little fashion show. Yes we're weirdoes but we don't care. That's why my mom is my best friend because she definitely doesn't act her age and neither do I. Mother like daughter.

...

After our little shopping spree , we decided to go to the food court to eat lunch. We found an empty table and put our stuff down.

"Now I know when they mean shop till we drop. I don't think I'll be shopping for a couple of months." I sit down on the chair all exhausted.

"Knowing you Ariel you'll go back to shopping after a week." My mom sits on the chair right across from me. Putting all her bags down.

"Pssshhh... no I wouldn't."

My mom gives me a look and rolls her eyes.

"Well you stay here and watch our stuff.  While  I get us some food." My mom says getting up from her seat.

I nod and  she walks towards the food court.

...

It's been past 25 minutes and still my mom has not yet returned. I look around the lines from the food courts and still see no sign of my mom anywhere.

All I saw was huge crowd in the middle of the food court and I decided to check it out. When I started getting closer and closer people were calling the ambulance and others were telling the people that just got here what happened.

They said there was a woman in her late 30's that fainted. Wait my mom is in her late 30's. I started to push people out of my way to see who fainted and when I reached to the front I saw it was my mom.

Dropping all of my things, I rush to my mom's side . "MOM! MOM WAKE UP." Shaking my mom lightly. My mother didn't respond.

"Somebody please call an ambulance!" I yell to the crowd panicking.

People were calling 911 and others were trying to comfort me.  But none of it helped at all. It just made me panic even more. Checking her wrist for pulse, I felt nothing. I started to perform CPR on her. Putting my hands together and pushed on her chest.

"Come on mom. Don't do this to me. Please don't leave me." I say to her lifeless body.

Continuing on what I was doing. I felt tears rolling down my face but I didn't care to wipe them.

Five minutes later the paramedics arrived and put my mom on a gurney. I followed the ambulance with my car and arrived to the hospital.

When we rush into the front doors of the emergency room, doctors and nurses rushed to our aid.

"Patient's name is Laura Cowell. Thirty eight years of age. Collapsed in the middle of the Ontario Mall. Checked for a pulse but it's faint. No known diseases in her medical history." The paramedic states to the doctor.

"Bring her to the surgical room for more examinations." The doctor orders them.

They were bringing her into a room and I was following them until I felt arms wrapped around me.  I couldn't move.

Looking back, I saw a nurse holding me tight. "I'm sorry miss but you can't go with them." The nurse says to me.

"But I need to be with my mom. She needs me in there. " Trying to fight his strong hold.

"I know but I can't let you go in there. Your mom is in good hands with the top doctors" the nurse tried to calm me down.

"Please. Please let me go see her" I beg the nurse with tears running down my face.

"All you can do is pray and have faith" the nurse tries to comfort me.

....

Calming down after all that crying, the nurse brought me to the waiting room. I sat down wondering how mom is doing. What happened to her? Is she sick? So many things were running through my head. I was not paying attention to anyone else in the waiting room.

"The family of Laura Cowell!" The doctor calls out. I get up from my seat and rush to the doctor.

"Is my mom okay? Where is she?" I ask the doctor.

The doctor looks  at me with a sad expression. "We did everything that we could to save her but your mom is gone. I'm sorry." The tells me with a pained expression on his face.

"Gone? What do you mean gone? She can't be. You're playing with me. She will come out any moment."  Not believing a word the doctor says and look around for her.

"I wish that was true. Your mom is in room 21B. It is best to say your good byes" the doctor suggests and leaves me.

...

I walk to room 21B and saw a cover over my mom's body. I took off the sheet and saw her lifeless body. I grab her hands and sat next to her on the bed.

"I can't believe you left me mom. You promised me that you would never leave me. You were suppose to see me grow up, see me get married and see your grandchildren. We were suppose to travel together." Saying to her lifeless body with tears falling down on my face.

"But I know that you will be fine and look down in heaven. Don't worry about me I will be fine. For sure I will miss our mother-daughter days, your chocolate chip pancakes, and also all of your hilarious jokes. Even though they're dumb and super corny. All I have left of you is the memories that we shared. I love you mom" I get up and kiss her forehead.

"Ariel." Someone calls my name.

I look up and see my Aunt Karen entering the room. I run to her and she engulfs me in a tight hug.

I start crying  into her arms. "Shhh... I know baby girl" she said stroking my hair trying to calm me down.

"She's in a better place now Ariel. I know it's hard but I know right now your mom wants you to be strong" Aunt Karen says to me.

All I could do is nod.

Aunt Karen goes to my mom and kisses her cheek. I heard her whisper "I love you sis .I'm going to miss you."

She puts the sheet back up and wipes away her tears on her sleeve .

"Let's go Ariel" my aunt says and leaves  the room.

I start to follow her and look back one last time. "Goodbye mom. I love you."
