10 The Tenant of Gloop Bungalow

Dick Butterscotch is a grateful and special orphan raised by a mean and deranged monk. Eventually he gets a job working as a homemaker for the sympathetic Lady Gloop of Gloop Bungalow. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a magical passion.

On the day of their wedding, a proud thief escapes from the attic of Gloop Bungalow and starts a fire. Believing that Lady Gloop is dead, Dick flees from the church and wanders the frozen moors for days until he is rescued by a admirable nurse.

However, although Lady Gloop is blinded by the fire, she still breathes. Without Dick she becomes selfish and cowardly. She turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the brother from the attic haunts her.

Meanwhile, thinking Lady Gloop is dead, Dick accepts a marriage proposal from his saviour, the nurse. However, one night he believes he can hear Lady Gloop calling, "Dick, where are you? Dick come home!" and he returns to Gloop Bungalow.

On Dick's return, he finds Lady Gloop drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the ghost of the proud thief, she attacks him with a candlestick and Dick Butterscotch dies.

As she attends to the body, Lady Gloop realises what she has done. Driven mad with guilt, she hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and she dies of consumption two weeks later.
