Honor

The pitch-black skies of night outstretched over the frigid, desolate landscape. The only landmark for seemingly endless miles was a singular village; a peaceful village, if you will, with prosperous gardens and a "cozy" atmosphere. The glow of fire was present on the outskirts of the village, belonging to a lone knight. He stood clad in his battle attire, concealing his face in its cold, hard steel. He was a knight of this village, serving his king with unwavering loyalty and regarded as one of the most honorable knights in the land. However, tonight, the torch was not simply for ease of sight; it was meant to bring destruction to the sleeping village. But, a very human question came to the mind of the knight; "Is this right?" Every human, no matter their nationality or race, undoubtedly experiences this question echoing throughout their minds during their life, asking whether the pondered action is really of them; or really what should be done. He pondered his character; what it would dictate in such a circumstance, and he came to the question of his honor. "What is honor?" He asked. "Is it doing what other men command of you? Or is it what the people say, and is doing what should be done, no matter the cost?" For this village was corrupt; full of greed and jealousy towards their fellow man, and leaving it be would certainly lead to the death of many. However, a new question arises; is killing ever worth the price? "Is it worth the mark on my soul for eternity?" He thought to himself. "Will the lives I take tonight ultimately lead to the lives of others?" Thus, it became a question of mortality, and therefore a question of morals. And thus, everything leads back to the simple question; "Is this right?" The knight pauses for a moment; not necessarily to think of morality, but to reflect and meditate on his future actions. Suddenly, he threw down his torch, lighting the house before him ablaze in an instant; and, therefore, dooming the village to burn. He turned and left, knowing that this action was ultimately right.
