2 Indescribable Rivalry

In the previous chapter:

Someone's footsteps was heard. She felt uncomfortable so she walked faster. But to her surprise, the person behind her also started to walk faster, even faster than her. Was that person following her? She fasten her pacing and did not stop, until a cold hand touched her shoulder.

Beige skin of her face became pale.

Cold sweats dripped off her face when her medium length weavy hair was lightly pulled. There was no trace of moisture on her lips. She slowly turned back. It was someone she never expected.

"Holly!" Jenny's eye widened. Her lungs restarted.

"Did I scare you?" Holly giggled.

"Absolutely not"

"Sorry" Holly touched her own ears. "Have you completed the assignment our professor gave us?"

"Yep, that was easy" Jenny yawned.

"Maybe for you Ms. Topper! But not for me." Holly pouted.

"Then I'll help you with it sweetie" jenny smiled softly.

"You're the best!" Holly hugged her. "By the way, Jenny..."

"Shhh", Jenny placed one finger on Holly's lips.

"Why? What are you looking at so carefully Jenny? Oh, it's a man. Do you know him? He's talking with our English professor on the street." She was puzzled.

"If you're asking whether I know what he does, then yeah he's a member of MMIO and his name is Mendel Knight, seeing the visiting card he's giving to Mr. William. But I don't know him personally, though I have a strong feeling that we will get to know each other very soon." Jenny's eyes narrowed.

"Are you into older guys? He's in his 50s" Holly giggled.

"Maybe or maybe not" Jenny smiled.

"Oh, then you're lucky. He noticed you." Holly said with a cheerful yet quiet voice.

Jenny turned around. The man was staring at her. Her teeths were gritting and fists clenching. Maybe she disliked this man for no reason at all, which was unusual. She glared at him for the last time and mumbled "Old hag" before looking away.

Holly and Jenny walked away from Mr. William and that weird devil looking old man.

"Hmm.. They're your students right?" The old man with wrinkled face asked.

"You mean Jenny and Holly? Yes they're my students but uh how do you know this?" Mr. William raised his black and white eyebrows, making his spectacles also go up.

"The ability to read lips really helps." The man said with an blank expression.

"Oh that's a fascinating ability Mr. Mendel!" Mr. William shook his head making his black and white hair jump.

Mendel smiled dryly but all that was on his mind at that moment was Jenny's stubborn blue eyes looking with disgust; her slim but not too skinny figure with clenching fists and tightened jaw, as if she would do anything to prove she was right, even if it cost something gigantic. He felt as if he got a clue about the biggest mystery in his life; as if he was about to face a challenge that had the power to destroy him, yet exactly the type of challenge he wanted to face. He lit up his cigarette and smirked, while whispering, "old hag".

Jenny locked the door as soon as she got inside her house. "I'm back".

"Quite early sis" Jack crossed his arm.

"Oh Sorry. Actually I was helping Holly with an assignment." She smiled nervously.

"Uh, alright then. By the way, did you forget something?" He sat on the sofa, taking all the space as fast possible so that Jenny couldn't seat on the sofa.

"No. I don't think so. I bought all the stationary I needed." Jenny checked her bag.

"I didn't mean that." His face darkened.

"Then what?" She looked at him curiously.

"Um.. never mind I guess." Jack scratched his neck and looked down at the floor.

"Why do you appear sad? Is there something I should've done but didn't do?" Her face was sympathetic.

"Not really... It's nothing. But what's in your hand? You liar!!! You didn't forget my birthday!" His eyes brightened.

Jenny chuckled. "You idiot! How can I forget my own brother's birthday? Here's your gift, a ticket to art gallery!" She hugged him.

"That's the exact gift I wanted!". Jack hugged her back. "Even dad used to give me a ticket of art gallery when I was a teen. It's such a good memory."

Dad... that word made her wanna burst into tears. Her dad... Who never let her be depressed, was always the shoulder she could cry on as much as she wanted. He was always there for her. Her dad always encouraged her when she failed, told her to get back up.

Jenny still remembers how he used to pat her head and say "Everything will be alright. Believe me, you can do it. I've faith in you".

She still find it unbelievable that the way he used to call her "Lily" can never be heard again. Only if that day she didn't let him and mom go... It was all my fault. I didn't deserve to be happy. Everything was my fault. I didn't even deserve to stay alive, she thought.

But she kept faking a smile as it was Jack's birthday. Maybe he was also trying to hide that he missed their parents.

"Sweetheart, where's my cake? You didn't forget about the cake right?"

"Oh shit. I actually... forgot about it" Jenny became embarrassed.

Jack laughed softly. "I knew it. Don't worry I've already made a cake for my birthday. But it's not something one should do on their own birthday!" He groaned.

"Then find me a sis-in-law who can remind me of the cake on your birthday".

"Jeez".

She couldn't stop laughing.

"Your blushing face is really cutesy and funny" Jenny winked.

"Whatever". He rolled his eyes.

"You won't grow up. Will ya? And have your friends come?"

"Yep they're waiting for you. Let's go" He pulled her hand.

"Hey Jack!! How long will you make us wait for? Ay hi Jenny! Long time no see" David, Jack's bestie said.

"Yo David, heard you broke up with your girlfriend because of Justin?" She grinned.

"Absolutely not! How many times do I gotta tell you I'm straight!!" He said.

"Yup but I'm an exception" Justin said.

"EW no. Anyway, let's play truth and dare" David said.

"So let me tell you the rules" Justin said.

"No! I'll make the rules. You always make it weird" David said.

"I'll make the rules. It's my birthday. I'm the king" jack said.

"You're just a servant who's being treated well on an occasion" David grinned.

Jack met his old friends after a long time. They spent the whole night chatting, playing.

Jenny got up to get some snacks. Suddenly, everything became black and blurry.
