23 Drowning In Doubts

In the previous chapter-

It made sense. Mr. William was a socially conserved person and didn't talk unless it was necessary. However, he seemed very friendly towards the bodyguard. So helpful, that he stayed around Jenny when the bodyguard went to have lunch and couldn't keep an eye on her.

As Noah said that day, Mr. William has decided who'll keep an eye on her, and he just needs Mr. William's assistance. How could I miss these...

However, when I saw Mendel and Mr. William together.... Even though Mr. William was polite, I felt like He was hostile to Mendel. What was their relationship anyway?

A professor meeting an officer of MMIO didn't seem too natural. Was Mendel somehow creating a win-win situation? But then what could benefit a socially conserved, not very invested in rules, English Literature loving professor? Unless... he was connected to one of the victim of mysterious murders?

I felt sick. I used to be his favorite student.... We sometimes recommended books to each other. Suddenly he thought I was a murderer? How much could Mendel manipulate people?

Was I losing that battle? Between my powers and exams, I almost forgot about this unasked battle. Couldn't Mendel just mind his own business? People were DYING, and he was having a mental war with a college girl. Shame on him.

The day turned into night.

Two people were walking in the moonlight.

"What's bothering you Liam?" Mendel asked.

Liam stayed quiet. How could he question his superior? How could he say that he had lost his faith in Mr. Mendel?

"What happened dear? Still doubting me?" Mendel asked.

"No Mr. Knight" Liam said.

"Oh my, you're showing me attitude huh?" Mendel chuckled.

Liam couldn't hold himself back anymore. After all, that was the man he admired his whole childhood.

"How can I not doubt you sir? We've not found any meaningful information in more than a month.  Every day feels like a week now. I feel useless and disappointed" he said.

Mendel chuckled, then sighed.

"We've gathered a lot of information, haven't we?" Mendel asked.

"Not meaningful ones" Liam replied. "Now I even pity the girl".

"Don't. Don't do that. If you pity criminals then it will be the reason of your death one day Liam. Also, you do know that we're getting some precious information, don't you? You're just doubting yourself, pitying her and listening to others' opinions a lot. That's getting in your way of understanding things. You've to control the time you feel empathetic and emotionless. That's the only way you can be a proper detective" Mendel lit a cigarette.

It was true. Liam was doing all the things Mr. Mendel told him not to do. He made a promise to himself. He would master his emotions like his mentor did. Finding his father's killer was way more important than what others might think. Mr. Mendel had always been trustworthy. Liam started to regret that he doubted his mentor like that.

Mendel seemed to know what was going through Liam's head.

"Don't blame yourself Liam. It's a good thing to question things. But a lot of the times, you've to find the answers yourself while controlling your emotions and ego. None will be there to help you" Mendel looked... sad.

Liam wanted to say that that would never happen to him because he had his mentor with him. But he was afraid of sounding cheesy, so he stayed quiet.

"So for now, your task is to find all the major clues from those 'meaningless information'. Got it?" Mendel asked.

"Yes sir" Liam straightened his head.

"Okay. That's enough for this day. Goodnight" Mendel said in a distant voice, Liam didn't like that.

Just like that they parted.

Liam took a shower and started to look through all the papers. He had to find some major clues.

He went through all the documents again, but this time with confidence.

He listened to the conversation that Mendel had with Jack.

Mendel questioned him in the interview to know his personality and how he handles things and to see if he knew anything about his sister's doings. It was enough for Liam to know that Jack was an honest person. The things Jack said were checked by Mendel himself. They turned out to be true.

Mendel started the conversation by complimenting his looks. It was very obvious from the start that Jack had pride in his looks and Mendel took advantage of that.

Mendel asked him about where Jack bought things to check if he was lying or not. Jack seemed to lie only when he was bored. So Liam's mentor did the best to keep him entertained. Then from the conversation afterwards, Liam concluded 2 things.

The 1st being, even though Jack was the closest to Jenny, he didn't seem to know what the murders his sister was committing. He didn't know about how Jenny's wounds heal. He also didn't know that Jenny have met Mendel.

The 2nd one was, Jenny was very interested in thriller books or anything related to crime, almost like an obsession.

It made Liam more focused on this case. A part of him started suspecting Jenny more.

He looked at the pile of documents. He just needed to find a few more major clues.

The night because day pretty soon.

Liam came to Mendel's office and was about to tell him about the things he found out about when Mendel told him to shut up and smirked.

"Dear, did you see that? Someone is trying to hack our computer. Guess who it is?" He asked.

"Mr. Elvis?" Liam asked.

"Oh no no. It's Noah. Jenny's new friend. The mysterious one" Mendel kept smiling in an odd way.
