Chapter 45: Cutting Ties [Part 2]

Mai POV:

I slowly regained my consciousness as the past events flashed through my eyes.

I tried to attack the group, but after taking out a couple of the mages, I got hit with several spells and fell on the floor, battered and wounded.

Then as a giant fireball was heading toward me. "Cale!" I yelled and shot up.

My eyes scanned the environment. I was in the forest I didn't recognize.

Where am I? I wondered and checked my body, but all my wounds were healed. I'm sure the last thing I saw was Cale suddenly appearing in front of me and being hit by the fireball. So how did I end up here?

How did Cale suddenly appear there? Is he hurt? Questions flooded my mind, "You should stay. Still, I'm still new at using healing magic," I spun around and saw a black-haired woman.

"Who are you?" I asked and tried to locate my rapier.

"My name doesn't matter right now," She then looked to her right, "I have healed her, my liege." She kneeled, and I looked to see who she was talking to, only to see Cale returning with bloodied and scorched clothes.

"Cale!" I tried to run to him but stopped when I saw the look in his eyes.

"Why did you do something so stupid?" He asked.

"W-What?"

"Why did you do something so stupid? You could have died if I didn't save you! For what? For stupid revenge?" He yelled at me.

I was scared. Never in my life have I seen him this mad before.

No.

I have never seen him mad at all.

He has sometimes acted cold, but he never got angry.

"I-I..." I tried to say, but he stopped me again.

"No! You may have been considered a prodigy among the trainees, but you are still human, and you should know that you can't take a group of magicians on yourself!"

"But they were worshipers of Ashborn!" I shouted back.

"So what? Even if they were, what can you do alone? Don't act like a child! Your teammates died. Big deal! They were stupid enough to get themselves killed, and now you are trying to follow in their footsteps."

How can he be so insensitive? I couldn't believe this was the Cale I had known for all those years.

"You know what, if you want to die, then I won't stop you, so don't expect me to swoop in and save you next time," He then looked at the black-haired woman, " Mio, let's go. We are leaving, "Falmuth is a four hours walk east." That was the last thing he said before leaving with that woman.

"Cale!" I tried to stop him, but he didn't stop, and I saw his figure disappear. I was frozen in place, not able to even run after him.

I broke down crying again. Why... Why... Why...

Cale Valentine POV:

I tried my best to control myself from releasing Monarch's Ambition with full intent as we walked away.

"My liege, are you planning to end your relationship with her?" Mio asked.

Her hate for me as Ashborn is too big, and that will just become worse as time goes on, "Yeah, it's best for the both of us," I answered, and we used shadow exchange to return to the castle.

Do I regret killing all those soldiers?

No, I don't.

They were people I didn't know or care about then, so I shouldn't care about them now that they are dead.

I chuckled to myself. I'm not human... Haven't been one ever since reincarnating here.

While it's hard for me to cut ties with her because she was the first person I got to know here, and we spent years together, it was best for both of us.

I hope she grows past losing her teammates and finds someone with whom she can spend her life. But, unfortunately, that person won't be me.

"Mio, bring me the strongest alcohol you can find..." I said, heading straight to my office. Why can't I have a skill that would turn off my emotions...

---

A couple of months have passed since I cut ties with Mai. During this time, I solely worked on expanding the floating kingdom, as people started calling it.

"Why did I ask for a written report..." I mumbled to myself, sitting in my office and reading through the reports from my shadow generals.

Reports from the different projects they are working on to everything happening around the continent. Projects like the turrets to a shield that would protect the floating castle even when I'm not around.

"Hmm..." I hummed. Ari had been dealing with removing those stupid fanatics that worshiped me as the God of Death and were trying to summon demons. Did Mom need to deal with this on a daily basis?

I poured myself a drink. Something I've been doing a lot lately. Even my shadows have been worried by the amount of alcohol I have consumed over this time.

"Mio, I need another bottle," I said while discarding the empty bottle.

"Here, my liege," She appeared out of the shadows with another bottle, "My liege drinking so much alcohol isn't good for you." She said, worried for me.

"Don't worry. I have Resistance and Regeneration, so nothing bad can happen if I drink a bit." I waved my hand in dismissal.

"But my liege, this is the second bottle today."

"Hmmm..." I hummed while looking out the window, "Maybe I should go and stretch my legs in the Jura Forest for a while."

I quickly finished my drink before standing up and teleporting to the Jura Forest to kill a couple of monsters.

They weren't hard to kill, especially with how strong I have gotten after my evolution, but I'm still nowhere near the level of the True Dragons.
