73 Chapter 73: An eternity at least

WITHIN A FEW MOMENTS, the camp was swarmed with uniformed men. Rafe and I stood to the side. I expected them to detain us for questioning, but for some reason, they didn’t seem to even notice us.

I glanced at Rafe and noticed him focusing on the group.

“Nice job, mind bender.”

He shrugged. “Well, it’s good to know I’m good for something. I’m beginning to feel expendable, hanging around you.”

“Never.” I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him. “I was close to the edge, Rafe. That was my mother. I mean, you saw her, right? That wasn’t just me hallucinating?”

He frowned. “I saw her. But Nell ... I’m not sure. It felt off. I didn’t so much see a person as sense a power, something pulling you toward her. It was ... weird. And then she was gone.”

“What did she look like to you?” I was shaken, and I needed to know the truth. Had she been here, or had some power used her face, the idea of my mother, to draw me in and tempt me?
