Chapter 2

My heart raced as I stood frozen. I stared at the door willing my feet to move. Slowly I began to shuffle torward the door. Where did that sound come from? I reached the door when another bang like a door slamming echoed through the halls. This time I didnt stop. As I ran through the house all the doors were open. I reached the livingroom. My heart sank when I looked at the far wall by the front door. A photo showing my parents at their wedding. The glass covering it was shattered and glass lay on the floor in pieces.

Broken glass crunched under my heel as I approached the photo. The glass was cracked from a point in the center of the picture as if it had been caused by something forcefully hitting it. I removed the photo from the wall when a sharp pain shot through my thumb. A small drop of blood slowly made it's way down my hand. "Shit." I wrapped my hand in my shirt and made my way to the kitchen. At the sink I ran my hand under the cold running water. It persisted to bleed. I didnt know where the first aid kit or any medical supplys were. I decided to settle for a rag. Wrapping it around my hand being sure to position it in a way it would put some pressure on my cut. I looked out the window but somthing was wrong. The head of the scarecrow was missing. I armed my self with a kitchen knife and ignoring all my instincts headed out into the fields. The sun had begun to set leaving a sinister red and orange hue to the night sky.

I reached the clearing to see the scarecrow on the ground the ropes frayed as if it had been cut down. I approached it clutching my knife with white knuckles. The leathery face stared up torward the sky as if admiring the sunset. Nothing natural could have caused the scarecrow to fall. A rustle in the field to my left caught my attention. My bravery was all but gone now as I slowly walked backward putting my back to the edge of the clearing. I looked on at the other side of the clearing expecting at any moment a small bunny to hop out like in the movies. The night grew quite and I stood there for what felt like a eternity. The only sound was my own breathing. Then I felt somthing. A presence behind me like a sith sense. My sense was confirmed when somthing heavily touched my shoulder. Instinctively I lashed out with my knife but it met nothing but corn husks. I continued lashing out hitting nothing. After determining my situation was hopeless I turned and ran as fast as my legs would allow me. I ran torward the house seeking safety behind it walls. Leaves stung my skin as I plowed through the field. As I ran I felt somthing was wrong. I should be able to see the lights of the house by now. My foot caught a root and I pitched forward. I dropped my knife to catch myself. I slammed into the hard packed ground and pain shot up my arm. My wrist made a audible pop. I put my good hand on the ground springing up but stopped short. I was back in the clearing. But this couldn't be the same one. The stake stood tall as it had before and the ropes lay on the dirt but the scarecrow was gone.
