6 The Shining Beacon

(A/N) I would like to quickly apologize for the delay between uploads. The reason is because this chapter—and all future chapters—range anywhere from three to five times the length of chapter 4. As such, they take far longer to edit and publish. With that out of the way, let's do this!

———————————————————————————————————————

The story is always the same. The forces of Good and Evil are perpetually locked in a deadly stalemate. Good is often viewed as altruism and order while Evil is seen as chaos and violence. This is the way it has been for many a generation.

However...

What if this trend was not absolute?

What if it were possible for the forces of good to be a little chaotic?

They might even cause a little HAVOC.

———————————————————————————————————————

The scene begins with the outside view of an airship on route to the well known huntsmen training institute, Beacon Academy. Aboard this airship were many teens—both male and female—who all shared a common goal: To become the next generation of Huntsmen and Huntresses.

Among the wide range of students, there are those who already stand apart from the crowd. This is quite literal in the case of three young men.

They were the brothers Slater. The fraternal twins, Anthony and Christopher, along with their younger brother, Heath, stood off to the side of the airship, away from the crowd.

"Well boys, this is it. We're finally going to Beacon!" Anthony said with excitement.

Heath was equally jubilant. "I know, right? I'm so pumped that we all get to go to Beacon together!"

Meanwhile, Christopher seemed more tired than anything. "just hope I can find a challenging opponent during our time at Beacon…" He said with a sigh.

"Hahaha!" Anthony chuckled at his twin's behavior as he teased him. "And, if you're lucky, you might even be able to find a girlfriend too!"

Chris scoffed at the thought. "Yeah right. Maybe we can find you and Heath girlfriends while we're at it."

"And on that note, I think we should change the subject!" Heath said uncomfortably. "There's something I've been curious about since we boarded this airship… Why didn't we just use the airship we took from those wannabe hijackers a few weeks ago?"

In response, Christopher pulled out a monocle as he spoke, "It's quite simple, really. Imagine if three, random teenage boys arrived at Beacon Academy in their own airship. Don't you think that would seem a little suspicious?"

Heath thought about his brother's words for a moment before his shoulders slumped in defeat. "Yeah, I guess you're right, Chris."

Anthony—in an effort to cheer up his younger sibling—gave Heath a hardy smack on the back. "Besides, you and I still have to make some of those upgrades we talked about, Heath. Trust me. We'll use the airship at some point."

Suddenly, the brothers heard one of the other passengers groaning. Looking to the source, they saw a boy hunched over and running to the back of the ship.

As they followed his movements, their eyes landed upon two girls standing directly opposite them on the airship. One girl was taller and had long, flowing blonde hair and lilac eyes. She was dressed in short-shorts, an orange tank top, a crop-top leather jacket, and fingerless gloves. The other girl was shorter and had neck length, black hair with red highlights and silver eyes. The shorter girl had on a red hooded cloak, a black blouse, a black skirt, and black leggings. The second girl also appeared to be a year or two younger than the first.

"Well... I guess the view isn't for everyone." The blonde girl stated as she rolled her eyes.

The girl in red shrugged her shoulders as she replied, "It was a nice moment while it lasted.

I wonder who we're gonna meet! I just hope they're better than Vomit Boy." Suddenly, the girl in red noticed something, "Oh, Yang, gross! You have puke on your shoe!"

"Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross!" The blonde—now known as Yang—panicked at the realization.

At the same time, the girl in red began slowly backing up while frantically waving her hands. "Get-Get away! Get away from me! Get away from me! Get away from me! Get away from me!"

While the two girls were freaking out and yelling, the Slater brothers had already started walking towards them. Chris was the first to speak up and divert the girls attention away from the vomit on the Blonde's shoe. "Hey there! I couldn't help but notice that you two seemed quite freaked out by something just now. What seems to be the trouble?"

The blonde—still rather grossed out—did her best to respond. "Well, this guy, that looked kinda motion sick, just ran past us, and he accidentally got vomit on my shoe!"

Chris shook his head in dismay. "Well that won't do at all. We can't have a pretty girl such as yourself walking around with vomit on her shoe, now can we? Here, allow me to help."

Christopher then removed a handkerchief from one of his coat pockets and knelt down to wipe the vomit from the blonde girl's shoe. Once done he wadded up the handkerchief and threw it over his shoulder into a waste bin, without even looking. "There we go. That's much better, wouldn't you say?" He replied with a satisfied grin.

"Yeah, it is! Thanks a lot, Good Lookin'." The blonde had a rather flirtatious tone in her response.

Christopher gave a mock bow as he spoke. "You're most welcome." He then had an epiphany. "Oh! I almost forgot to introduce myself. My name is Christopher Slater, but you can just call me Chris. And these two are my brothers." He Gestured to Anthony and Heath who were standing on either side of him.

Anthony introduced himself next, "I'm Anthony, Chris's fraternal twin brother." He spoke in a polite and proper manner.

Heath eagerly introduced himself last with his trademark toothy smile and a peace sign. "And my name's Heath, Chris and Anthony's younger brother. Before you ask, yes, I did get moved ahead one year in order to come with my brothers."

"Great to meet ya" the blonde said with a smile. She then looked at Chris, specifically. "Especially you, hot stuff. My name's Yang, and this is my little sister Ruby." The flirty tee gestured to the young girl in red who stood behind her.

Heath was confused as he looked at Ruby. "Little sister? Does that mean you got moved ahead too?"

Ruby spoke up this time, "Yeah, I did... But it's really not a big deal." The younger girl twiddled her thumbs nervously.

But, Yang was not about to let her sister be so modest. "What are you talking about, Ruby? Of course it's a big deal. You stopped that Torchwick guy from robbing that Dust store!"

Ruby was thoroughly embarrassed by her sister's bragging, "Yang!"

Heath, however, was awestruck, "Whoa! Did you really do that? That's super awesome, Ruby! You should be proud of yourself."

Ruby became flustered by Heath's enthusiastic praise. "T-thanks..." She stuttered timidly.

A moment later, the airship landed at Beacon Academy. As the doors of the opened, the group witnessed the tall blonde boy whom Ruby had dubbed "Vomit Boy" sprint past them and to the nearest trash can, where he proceeded to empty the contents of his stomach. Anthony, Heath, Chris, Yang, and Ruby soon followed the rest of the occupants in exciting the airship.

Ruby and Yang, "Wow..." The two sisters were mystified by the view which lay before them.

Yang, "The view from Vale's got nothing on this!"

At this point, Ruby and Heath took notice of all the different weapons being carried by the other students. This sight caused both of the younger teens to go into full blown weapon-nerd-mode.

Ruby had stars in her eyes as she violently shook Yang in her excitement. "Ohmygosh, sis! That kid's got a collapsible staff!"

Heath was in a similar state as he pointed out weapons of his own. "And look over there Ruby, that girl's got a fire sword!"

The two weapon fanatics then attempted to get a closer look at the variety of weapons before them, but they were stopped by Yang and Chris pulling them back.

"Ow! Ooww!" Ruby struggled in vain against Yang's grip.

"Hey! What's the deal, Chris!?" Heath squirmed in frustration, eventually falling on his bum when Chris let him go.

Yang was the first to answer. "Easy there, little sister. They're just weapons!"

Chris, "It's just like Yang said. You need to slow down a bit, Heath. Their just weapons!"

Ruby and Heath responded in unison,

"'Just weapons'? They're an extension of ourselves! They're a part of us! Oh, they're so cool!"

Yang still didn't understand. "Well, why can't you swoon over your own weapon? Aren't you happy with it?" She asked in confusion.

Ruby brought out a rectangular weapon from her back, transforming the weapon into its scythe form. "Of course I'm happy with Crescent Rose! I just really like seeing new ones. It's like meeting new people, but better…"

"See Chris! Ruby gets it. Also… Holy shit Ruby! That thing is sooooo freaking awesome!" Heath exclaimed as he was mesmerized by Ruby's impressive weapon.

Ruby blushed slightly at the compliment, "Thanks, Heath..."

Yang playfully pushed her sister's hood down over her face. "Ruby, come on, why don't you go try and make some friends of your own?"

"But... why would I need friends if I have you? And, what about Heath, Chris, and Anthony?" Ruby questioned as she fixed her hood.

"Well..." Yang paused as she spoke.

In a flash, a group of other students surround Yang and Chris—as he had been standing directly beside her—and they all dashed down the path.

"Actually, my friends are here. Gotta go catch up. 'Kay, see ya, bye!" Yang shouted quickly as she and Chris were whisked away.

Chris was in shock at the sudden turn of events, "Whoa! What the heck is going on!? Ahh!"

Heath was laughing hysterically at Christopher's misfortune. "Hahahaha! See ya at the opening ceremony Chris. Have fun with your new girlfriend! Hahaha!" The young pyro held his sides as he continued laughing. "He's gonna hate being around that many people, don't you think Anthony…" When he didn't get a response, Heath scanned the area for his brother. "Anthony?" He quickly realized that Anthony had vanished. "Huh, I wonder where he went?" Heath shrugged it off without a care and turned to Ruby. "Guess it's just me and you now, Ruby."

Looking to where he'd last seen Ruby, Heath was met by a completely different sight. What he saw was Ruby sitting on the ground. Standing over her was a slightly older girl with snow-white hair. She was dressed in a white and sky-blue skirt, blouse, and heels. The aforementioned girl was shaking a vile filled with Fire Dust in Ruby's face as she was yelling.

Heath dragged his hand down his face and slumped forward with a sigh. "Ah shit. This can't possibly end well."

Meanwhile: with Anthony...

Upon exiting the ship, Anthony had noticed a tall blonde boy hunched over a nearby trashcan. Being the good-natured person he was, Anthony felt that he should go and see if the young man was alright. So, he walked over to his fellow blonde without anyone noticing his absence.

"Hey buddy, you doin' ok?" Anthony asked in concern.

The young man responded rather shakily, "Yeah, I think I'm ok now, thanks for asking."

"Good to hear, the name's Anthony by the way. Anthony Slater." He introduced himself.

"Nice to meet you Anthony." The blonde replied with a smile. He then introduced himself exaggeratedly. "The name's Juane Arc. Short, sweet, and rolls off the tongue. The ladies love it."

Anthony merely smiled and rolled his eyes at Jaune's antics. "I'm sure they do. In any case, it's nice to meet you Juane." Anthony put out his hand which Jaune quickly grabbed.

As the two teens shook hands, they heard an explosion off in the distance. Looking towards the blast then back to each other, Juane and Anthony began making their way towards the source of the explosion.

Back with Heath and Ruby...

Heath knew that something bad was going to happen the moment he saw the crabby girl in white shaking a vile of Fire Dust in Ruby's face. And he was right. No sooner had the thought crossed his hind before he heard Ruby sneeze followed by a large explosion enveloping the area.

Thinking fast, Heath activated his semblance. The size and suddenness of the blast made it difficult to fully suppress, but the pyrokinetic did the best he could. With his unbelievable strength of will, Heath was able to protect Ruby, himself, and even the crabby girl from the majority of the blast—though he made his first priority protecting Ruby.

Heath roared with determination, "HRAAAAAAA!!!"

With all the concentration and effort he could muster, Heath managed to condense much of the blast into a small sphere between his hands. As he did so, Ruby and the crabby girl uncovered their eyes.

The crabby girl was quick to respond in confusion. "What the… wh-where did the blast go?"

Ruby was equally confused. "What happened!?"

Heath got both girls' attention when he called out. "Wanna see something cool, Ruby!?!?"

The two young girls turned towards Heath and went slack-jawed. In front of their eyes, Heath appeared to be sucking the blast towards himself and condensing it between his hands.

Just when the girls could get more confused, Heath started a weird chant. "Ka-me-ha-me-HAAAAAAAAAA!!!"

As Heath finished his chant, he pointed his palms towards the sky, and let loose a beam of pure fire that seemed to stretch into the heavens! With the danger averted, Heath dropped to his knees in exhaustion. With fear in her eyes, Ruby used her semblance and transformed into a flurry of rose petals as she rushed to Heath's side. "Heath!!! Are you okay!? What was that!?!?!?" The young girl exclaimed with worry. She reached Heath's side just as he was about to collapse. Ruby hugged onto Heath tightly as she kept him upright.

"*Cough!* *Cough!* Haha... Sorry Ruby. Hope I didn't scare you with my little light show." Despite his exhaustion, Heath managed to laugh and smile as he talked to Ruby.

Now that the area was clear, and everyone was safe, the crabby girl from before immediately went back to chastising Ruby, for whatever reason. "Unbelievable! This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about!"

Ruby gave an embarrassed apology, "I'm really, really sorry!"

But the white-haired girl didn't seem satisfied. "Ugh, you complete dolt! What are you even doing here? Aren't you a little young to be attending Beacon?

Ruby stuttered as she tried to respond, "Well, I-I..."

Heath was irritated by such accusations, and he was about to tell the crabby young women off. However, the snobby girl interrupted him and continued ranting. "This isn't your ordinary combat school. It's not just sparring and practice, you know! We're here to fight monsters, so... watch where you're going!"

"Hey, I said I was sorry, princess!" Ruby retorted—fed up with the older girl's attitude.

"It's heiress, actually." An unknown voice stated bluntly as they arrived.

Heath, Ruby, and the white-haired girl turned to the source of the voice. They found that it belonged to a taller girl dressed in black and white. She had amber eyes and long black hair, along with a large black bow on her head. The girl in black continued talking as she approached with an empty vial in hand. "Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, one of the largest producers of energy propellant in the world."

The crabby girl—now known as Weiss Schnee—smiled smugly at the newcomer's statement. "Finally! Some recognition!"

But, Weiss's victory was short-lived as yet another new voice joined the conversation. "The same company infamous for its controversial labor forces and questionable business partners."

The four teens looked around for the source of the voice, but couldn't find anything. "Over here," the voice grumbled. Just then, a figure appeared from the shadows. This time, it was a young man dressed from head-to-toe in black clothing which resembled a cowboy.

Weiss grew angry at the accusation against her family's company. "Wha- How dare- The nerve of... Ugh!"

Ruby chuckled at the turn of events as Weiss got up other girl's face and took the bottle of dust from her, walking off in a huff as her helpers gathered her luggage and followed.

Ruby shouted out one last apology to Weiss as the heiress walked off. "I promise I'll make this up to you! Sigh. I guess I'm not the only one having a rough first day..." the Little Red Reaper tried talking to the two teens dressed in black. "So, what's..." unfortunately they were already gone.

Seeing both the young man in the cowboy attire and girl with the black bow walking off, Ruby collapsed to the ground on her back.

"Welcome to Beacon…" Ruby groaned as she draped her arm over her face.

She remained this way until a shadow came over her. Opening her eyes, she saw that it was Heath standing over her with his hand outstretched. His signature smile was spread across his face. "Need a hand, Ruby?"

"Y-yeah. Thanks for all your help, Heath." Ruby stammered out. The young girl didn't know why, but she could feel her face heating up.

With a bit more strength than either expected, Heath pulled Ruby up onto her feet. The extra force caused him to pull her in for a quick hug. This action caused both the young teens to blush furiously—though neither could see the other's face. Their moment was short lived as a familiar voice called out to them. "I should have known that I'd find you two at the center of that commotion."

Turning around, their suspicions were confirmed when they saw Anthony walking towards them. However, Heath and Ruby noticed that someone else was with Anthony. Upon taking a closer look, they realized it was the blonde haired young man whom Ruby nicknamed, "Vomit Boy".

"And don't worry you two, I won't tell Chris and Yang about your little 'moment' just now. For what it's worth though, I think you two look adorable together." Anthony teased the young duo.

This comment only caused the blush on the pair's faces to deepen. Thinking quickly, Heath tried diverting the topic of their conversation as the group began walking through the courtyard towards Beacon. "So Anthony, who's that guy beside you." He asked curiously.

Before Anthony could even open his mouth, the aforementioned "Vomit Boy" began to introduce himself. "The name's Juane Arc. Short, sweet, and rolls off the tongue. The ladies love it." The young man spoke just as dramatically as he had to Anthony.

"Do they?" Ruby asked skeptically.

"They will! Well, I-I hope they will. My mom always says that... Never mind." Jaune started confidently but quickly fell apart.

Ruby giggled before a short, awkward silence fell over the group. "So... I got this thing!" She then pulled out Crescent Rose and stabbed it into the ground.

"Whoa! Is that a scythe?" Jaune asked as he stared in awe at the massive weapon.

"It's also a customizable high-impact sniper rifle!" Ruby explained with a proud smile.

Unfortunately, Jaune had no idea what Ruby's words meant. "A-wha...?" He asked confusedly.

"She means it's also a gun." Heath explained in the simplest way possible

"Oh. That's cool!" Jaune exclaimed with newfound understanding.

"So what've you guys got?" Ruby asked as she put away Crescent Rose.

Heath and Anthony shared a glance before smirking; they knew exactly what the other was thinking. Without a word between them, the brothers drew their weapons.

Heath pulled out two shotguns from seemingly nowhere. Spinning the two shotguns around his index fingers, he seamlessly pressed a button on the side, transforming the shotguns into twin axes. "Allow me to introduce you to the Will-O-Wisps. They are my twin combat-axe-shotguns." The young pyro introduced his weapons with great pride.

Ruby immediately went into weapon-geek mode. "Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! Ohmygosh! They're so awesome!" She jumped around with excitement.

"That's not all. I can also channel my semblance into the axe form." As Heath said this, the axe blades ignited, and fire danced across the edges.

"So cool!" Ruby shouted in amazement.

Jayne was similarly mystified, "Whoa!"

As the fire disappeared, Heath quickly holstered his weapons.

"Now it's my turn." Anthony said as he stood in front of the group. With a smirk on his face, he reached over his right shoulder. In one swift motion, Anthony brought forth a two-handed great-axe from his back. The young man effortlessly twirled the great-axe in his hands before giving it a mighty upward swing—a jet of air shooting following the direction of the swing.

Jaune's mouth hung agape. "Holy crap, Anthony!"

Ruby zipped around with excitement as she examined Anthony's weapon. "That was amazing! Was that your semblance just now,

"Nope." Anthony said with a cheeky grin.

Ruby and Jaune were so shocked that they spoke in unison. "Whaaaaaaaaat!!! Then how did you do that air-slash thingy!?!?"

Anthony just continued grinning like an idiot. "Sorry, but I can't tell you that. It's a trade secret. But… I can show you my weapon's second form."

With the press of a button, Anthony transformed the great-axe into a submachine gun with a drum mag attached to it. "Friends, brother, I present to you my partner in crime, Hellfire. It's a double-edged, two-handed great axe that can turn into a Thompson submachine gun with a fifty round magazine." After showing off his weapon, Anthony put it away and asked, "So… what do you have Jaune?"

"Oh! I, uh... I got this sword!" Jayne said as fumbled a bit while pulling the blade.

"Ooooohh!" Ruby gawked.

"Yeah, and I've got a shield, too!" Jaune added. He removed his scabbard from his waist, raised his arm and expanded the metal into a pristine White shield.

Ruby quickly started touching the shield as she asked, "So, what do they do?"

Juane began fumbling with the shield as it retracted off his arm, expanded, and retracted again before putting it back in place and finally shrinking it down for good, placing it on his belt. "The shield gets smaller, so when I get tired of carrying it, I can just... put it away..." he stated awkwardly.

This made Ruby curious. "But... wouldn't it weigh the same?" She asked.

Jaune replied dejectedly "Yeah, it does..."

Ruby giggled softly. "Well, I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons, sooo... I guess I did go a little overboard when designing it."

Heath scratched the back of his head as he spoke up, "Yeah, I might have gone overboard too."

Jaune's eyes went as wide as saucers. "Wait- you made those?!"

"Of course! All students at Signal forge their own weapons!" Ruby stated matter-of-factly.

"It was the same with me, Anthony, and Chris." Heath chimed in, "Didn't you make yours?" He asked curiously.

Jaune stared solemnly at his blade. "No. It's a hand-me-down. My great-great-grandfather used it to fight in the war."

"Sounds more like a family heirloom to me!" Ruby laughed jokingly. "Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days."

Jaune sheathed the sword. "Yeah, the classics..."

"Hmm." Ruby hummed as she looked around. "Hey, where are we going?"

Jaune turned to the other's as he stopped walking. "Oh, I don't know! I was following you guys. Y-You think there might be a directory? Maybe a food court? Some kind of recognizable landmark?" Heath stared blankly at Jaune in response. "Is, uh... Is that a 'no'?"

Ruby giggled at the display. "That's a 'no'."

"Don't worry guys. I think I have a good idea of where we should go. Now, follow me!" Anthony gave a light chuckle before walking in the direction of the campus auditorium. Ruby, Heath, and Jaune followed close behind him.

After walking around for several minutes, the group finally managed to locate the entrance to the auditorium. Once inside, they are able to see just how massive Beacon's auditorium truly is. As the four took in the site, they soon noticed Chris and Yang through the crowd.

Chris called out to them once he took notice. "Hey Heath, Anthony! We're over here!"

Yang waved at the group and smiled brightly. "Ruby! Over here! I saved you a spot!"

"Oh! Hey, I-I gotta go! I'll see you after the ceremony!" Ruby gave Jaune a rushed apology before speeding over to her sister.

Heath waved to Jaune as he followed Ruby. "It was great meeting you, Jaune! See ya later!"

Anthony looked apologetically at Jaune "Sorry to bail on you like this, Jaune, but I gotta go. Catch ya later, after the ceremony."

Yang was standing with hers arms crossed when Ruby and the other two joined her and Chris. "How's your first day going, little sister?"

Ruby folded her arms and pouted. "You mean since you ditched me and I exploded?"

Yang stared wide-eyed at her sister. "Yikes! Meltdown already?"

However Ruby was being completely serious. "No, I literally exploded a hole in front of the school! And there was some fire, and I think some ice...?"

Yang smiled broadly, thinking it was joke. "Are you being sarcastic?"

Heath walked up next to Ruby and reiterated the story. "No, Yang. Ruby is being serious. There was an actual explosion caused by some fire dust, among other things.

"And that's not even the best part!" Anthony explained as he took over the explanation. "This guy decided to be all cool and use his semblance to control the blast as much as possible." Anthony had a knowing smirk as he pointed teasingly at Heath.

"Hey! I just didn't want anyone to get hurt, that's all! Especially not Ruby." Heath whispered the last part to himself.

Anthony rolled his eyes and chuckled at how terrible Heath was at lying. "Is that right? Then why did you ask if Ruby wanted to see something cool after you condensed that blast into a small sphere, before you blasted it into the sky like a beam of light? I think it's because you wanted to show off for someone."

"I-I-I… Fine...you got me. I was trying to act cool in front of Ruby." Heath tried to think of an excuse, but found none. Sighing in defeat, the pyrokinetic was forced to admit the truth.

Hearing this, Ruby's face turned cherry red, and she had no idea how to respond. However, the moment was short-lived as Weiss Schnee walked up to Ruby out of the blue.

"YOU!!!" Weiss's shouted—pointing accusingly at Ruby.

Startled, Ruby quickly jumped into Heath's arms. "Oh, God, it's happening again!" She wailed.

"You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!" The heiress was still fuming about the events that had transpired.

Yang watched with a deadpan expression. "Oh my God, you really exploded."

Heath and Anthony shouted at Yang, in unison, "We told you!"

"It was an accident." Heath defended Ruby—still obliviously holding her.

Ruby quickly got out of Heath's arms as she spoke to Weiss. "Yeah, It was an accident!"

Weiss ignored the pair, and held up a pamphlet titled "DUST: For Dummies and Other Inadequate Individuals" to Ruby.

Ruby stared at the pamphlet in confusion. "What's this?"

In response, Weiss began listing off policies to a clueless and horrified Ruby, going faster and higher pitched with each word. "The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field."

Ruby blinked several times— completely lost. "Uuhhh...?"

Weiss rolled her eyes before speaking in a much calmer tone. "You really wanna start making things up to me?"

Ruby was still partially confused by the young heiress's question. "Absolutely?"

Weiss shoved the pamphlet into Ruby's hands. "Read this, and don't ever speak to me again."

Yang—who had been watching the interaction transpire—decided to step in. "Look, uh, it sounds like you two just got off on the wrong foot. Why don't you start over and try to be friends, okay?"

Ruby put the pamphlet away. "Yeah! Great idea, sis!" The Little Red Reaper put out her hand as she cleared her throat. "Hello, Weiss! I'm Ruby! Wanna hang out? We can go shopping for school supplies!"

"Yeah! And we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cute boys, like the two tall blonde guys over there!" Weiss said as she gestured towards Anthony and Jaune.

Anthony did a gentlemanly bow towards Weiss. "Ms. Weiss, I'm flattered." As he stood up, he gave Weiss a Cheshire smile. "I must say, snow fairy, you look quite stunning, yourself."

Weiss had no response to Anthony's comment—other than the slight blush on her cheeks. His gentlemanly behavior and smooth tone of voice made it where she couldn't think straight.

Heath chuckled at the sight of the embarrassed heiress. "Well, it looks like WeissSchnee.exe has officially stopped responding!"

That comment was all it took for Weiss to snap out of her trance. Turning on her heels, Weiss walked off from the group in a flustered mess.

The group's attention was then drawn to the stage, where Professor Ozpin was readying the microphone, with Glynda Goodwitch beside him. "I'll... keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction." Some of the students whisper among themselves as Ozpin continued. "You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step."

As Ozpin left, Glynda Goodwitch stepped up to talk. "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."

"He seemed kind of... off." Yang stayed what everyone had been thinking.

Ruby added, "It's almost like he wasn't even there."

Chris rubbed his chin—deep in thought. "Curious..."

Heath had only one way of describing the headmaster's behavior. "Weird..."

Meanwhile, Anthony was on a different train of thought, entirely. "I wonder if I left the stove on at home? Oh well, mom probably got it."

This statement caused all the others to look at Anthony with mixed emotions. Ruby and Yang looked at him quizzically while his brothers looked at him like he was being a moron.

(Later, in the Ballroom)

The sun had set some time ago and given way to a night sky illuminated by a fractured moon. The new students of Beacon were splayed out on their sleeping bags through the massive ballroom. Ruby and Yang were in their pajamas. Ruby was laying on top of her sleeping bag, writing in a journal when Yang crashed onto the sleeping bag next to her. "It's like a big slumber party!" The older of sister cheered.

Ruby didn't look up from the journal as she responded. "I don't think Dad would approve of all the boys, though."

"I know I do!" Yang purred as she watched several muscular, shirtless guys... and Jaune, dressed in feetie pajamas, waving to her, which made her groan before she returned her attention to Ruby. "What's that?" Yang pointed to the journal that Ruby was writing in.

Ruby paused her writing as she held it up for Yang to see. "A letter to the gang back at Signal. I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going."

"Aw, that's so cuuuute!" Yang cooed.

Suddenly, Yang was knocked back as a pillow was launched at her face by Ruby. "Shut up! I didn't get to take my friends with me to school! It's weird not knowing anyone here!"

Yang had a confused look after recovering—finding Ruby's statement to be strange. "What about Jaune? He's... nice! There you go! Plus one friend! And don't forget about Anthony, Chris, and especially Heath. I'm pretty sure he likes you, a lot."

Ruby turned her back to Yang as she put her journal away. "Pretty sure Weiss counts as a negative friend..."

"There's no such thing as negative friends! You just made four new friends and one enemy—and maybe even crush!" Yang squealed with delight as she teased her sister.

However, it was short lived as she was once again hit with a pillow, this time looking like a dog, to the face. "Look, it's only been one day. Trust me; you've got friends all around you! You just haven't met them yet!"

Just then, the Slater brothers walked up to where Ruby and Yang were laying. Heath and Chris were shirtless while Anthony had on a tight-fitting T-shirt, and all three were wearing pajama pants. The three brothers had well developed physiques, but they weren't over the top.

"Hello ladies. What are you two up to?" Anthony said as the three brothers came to haunt.

Yang gazed absentmindedly at Chris with lustful eyes. "Oh, not much. Just enjoying the view."

It was clear as day Yang was up too, so Chris flirted right back—not embarrassed in the slightest. "Is that so? Well, I hope you like what you see."

Yang: I definitely like it, alright.

While Chris and Yang continued their painfully obvious flirting, Heath walked over to Ruby and knelt down beside her. Ever since the brothers had arrived, Ruby had a thousand-yard-stare and a red face. So, Heath wanted to make sure she was alright.

Heath placed a hand on Ruby's shoulder and waved his hand in front of her face. "Hey Ruby, are you doing alright? You've been kinda quiet since we got here, and your face is looking a little red. Are you feeling ok?"

This sudden contact caused Ruby to finally break out of her trance. "Y-yeah, H-Heath, I'm fine. Thank you for asking though."

Heath was hesitant at first, but he decided it was better to trust the young girl. "Ok, Ruby, I'll take your word for it. I was just a little worried for you is all." Standing up, the young pyro turned to his brothers. "Welp, I think it's time we hit the hay, what do you guys say?"

"I believe you're correct, Heath. It would probably be in our best interest to be well rested," said Anthony.

Chris shrugged his shoulders in response. "I suppose we should. We do have initiation tomorrow, after all. Goodnight Yang, Ruby. We will see you again in the morning."

"I'll be looking forward to it, hot stuff. Goodnight." Yang had the same flirtatious tone from before as she directed her farewell at Chris.

Ruby waved goodbye as the trio left—a smile on her face. "Goodnight guys!"

Once they reached their sleeping area, the brothers Slater immediately drifted off to sleep, each of them excited for what tomorrow would hold.
