Eric wasn't a fool, but his inferiority complex, his present situation never allowed him to refute. They even set up a fiance for him two years later to prevent him from raising doubt abs rebel, and that was eve.

He really fell for her and found she was different from the women he met in the past. but all priced him wrong today.
