Learning About The World

Making up a story of how he snuck onto one of their boats on the way over to the island, Riku convinced the group that he was from where they were from and was an ally.

This surprised the group, mostly because of what Riku was wearing. However, they were more concerned about the Natives and getting back to their camp safely.

On the way back to the camp, John tried to explain that earlier in the week, they tried to negotiate some terms with the natives, but that their commander Governor Ratcliffe ruined it and so both sides were now not on good terms.

Hearing about how Governor Ratcliffe hated the Natives, made Riku feel a little off. Why would a man hate a whole group of people without really getting to know them?

"Governor Ratcliffe, we found a boy on our scouting mission. He was captured by those Natives!" one of John's men shouted out as they entered the camp.

A long and largely built man walked out of a small building and saw Riku and John walking into the camp.

"Those damnable Natives! If it wasn't for them, our progress here would be much further along!" Governor Ratcliffe replied, but seemed to be speaking his thoughts out loud for the surrounding men to hear.

"Governor Ratcliffe, they are not all bad." John replied to him as he went to shake this man's hand.

Riku was not sure what to do, so he instead just allowed John to do the talking until the bells rang for lunch. Meeting many different colonial men, Riku felt like he was now surrounded by many people who had their own dreams and aspirations.

After eating, Riku followed John around the camp as John explained to him further about the current situation. John was someone who all of the men within the camp respected, but Governor Ratcliffe was the true leader on this mission from the King.

Listening to John all day, Riku decided to help John convince the Natives of these lands to come to a peaceful agreement so both sides can live peacefully here. John accepted Riku's help and the next day brought him secretly away from the camp to meet a new friend of his who felt the same way.
