40 The making of my puppet..

I went to my brother's room and talked to the German doctor who was assigned by my uncle the Kaiser to look after my brother. He was visibly worried as he was trying to prepare some medications.

" We must stop the bleeding.. " He said while he gave my brother a dose of crushed tablets. " The nurse will stay with him round the clock and I will be here as well to monitor if he is responding to the medications or not" He added.

I went at my brother's bedside and kissed his hand..

Alexei: Where is that old lady now?

Me: She is gone. But I need you to forget everything you saw inside my room. You didn't see her because you were inside your room the whole day.. Can you do that for me?

Alexei: We will lie again? Remember what our parents used to tell us? They said that God will punish us if we lie because He hates it.

Me: I know but sometimes, we need to lie in order to save ourselves from dangers.. Mama and Papa will understand us.. I hope God will understand us too because He knew what happened to our family.. Our sisters and parents are in heaven now.. But we are still here because we still have unfinished business..

Alexei: And what is our unfinished business?

Me: I will tell you when the bleeding stops. You must rest now and don't forget what I told you.. You didn't see anybody inside my room and you don't know anything about that old lady because you never saw.. not once.

I kissed his forehead and went back to my room. I saw Amelie staring at the ceiling with a blank expression on her face.

The poor girl was in shock.. I made her my accomplice to those two people that I killed.. I felt terrible for her.. she was just a young girl and I ruined her innocence..

I escorted her to the bathroom and I gave her a bath. I washed her body and her hair to remove all the traces of blood.. I sincerely apologised to her for dragging her into this mess..

" The world is full of evils.. I was also a victim.. but I needed to survive for my brother." I said while I was brushing her hair.

" You have been so helpful to me.. I didn't know how I would handle these recent events if you were not here at my side.." I told her.

I opened my little jewellery box and gave her a diamond necklace..

" It was a gift from one of my Aunts.. it is yours now. " I said.

" I'm just a servant my lady.. How can I accept that expensive gift?" She politely asked.

" Because of your bravery and dedication, I will no longer treat you as my servant.. From this moment on, you will be my distant cousin.. You will no longer wear your uniform.. I will provide for your dresses, gowns and shoes..You will dress and act like a real noblewoman. I explained while I placed the necklace around her neck..
