7 Chapter 7

The silence continued when we were dropped off and I fell into step beside him. The diner was closer than our apartment. I was losing my small window of opportunity to have a frank discussion with Drew.

I placed my hand on his shoulder to get his attention. He looked at me with his rich, soulful eyes and I had a compelling need to kiss him again.

“I said you could come with me. I didn’t say we could talk.” His sharp tone was at odds with his solemn expression. The impact from a punch to the nose would have been less traumatic.

I snatched my hand back as if his shoulder burned. I spent the duration of the walk wondering what I did wrong. Drew kept his gaze fixed forward.

The diner’s parking lot was full, and it looked like there was standing room only inside. Were they giving out free food to draw such a crowd?

Patty, another waitress, noticed us squeezed inside the front door and gave a quick wave. “Your mom is somewhere around here, Drew.”
