“So, then we should talk about the thing.” He shifted closer to me.

No no no no no! I couldn’t rehash it with him if I had any chance of moving past my feelings that would never be returned.

“Can’t we forget it? Like you said, it was a funny joke.” I managed what I hoped was a smile.

“If that’s what you want.” I refused to meet his eyes, didn’t want him to see the tears that were threatening to fall again.

“Yeah, I’ll catch up with you in the morning.” I made my escape and threw myself on my bed, muffling my sobs with my pillow. 4

Ignoring the overgrown, neon pink elephant in the room, Drew and I went about our normal routine as if nothing happened in the alley. School was ending in a few days, and I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my summer days until the next school year began. If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would have bet all my money on being stuck to Drew’s side. Now, after that awkward thing, space might be what we needed.
