9 Chapter 9

I was awoken by streams of sunlight finding their way through gaps in the tent. I sat up and yawned. That was by far the best sleep I ever had. I sat up and reached out for the door, ready to step out into the busy streets of Elysium.

Instead of my hand grasping the marble doorknob as I expected, my hand brushed against the cloth. I looked around in confusion then realised where I was. I sat back down and smiled. I had completely forgotten that I wasn't in Elysium anymore.

I opened my status. It was like a ritual I followed every day before I was killed. Even if it didn't change it brought me a strange feeling to see it.

My eyes were drawn to my titles. I remembered getting each one like it was yesterday.

I got the "Bane of Azrael" title for defeating the archon Azrael in battle. I remember the day vividly. We had been tipped off about a potential location of the Archon by letter. I had told the mages guild it was a trap but they were too caught up in their search for him, that they didn't even stop for one second to consider they were walking straight into his arms.

The fight started well, we had Azrael on the back foot but then things took a turn for the worse. All of a sudden the mages attacks did not affect him. It was like there was a barrier around his body preventing the mana from the attacks reaching him.

Because of this, I was the only one who could fight him. The other warriors were back in Elysium due to them not being strong enough. When I started to fight Azrael the mages could no longer help at all. Their spells risked hitting me and killing their only hope of surviving.

He had fought with two double blades axes. He also wore armour very similar to the one Rhea wore. He was about ten feet tall and I didn't know what he looked like because he wore a helmet that fully covered his head.

After we had killed him it felt like the whole world was shaking. We saw the sun get darker and darker until there was no light left. Unlike normal nighttime, you couldn't see any stars in the sky and it felt like you were constantly being watched.

The mages attempted a few times to remove the darkness. I was there for their last attempt. There were four golden beams of mana shooting up into the sky. Sometime during the spell, something went wrong and the beams started to dim. The casters bodies got darker and darker until they eventually became pitch black.

From what the mages told me their mana became corrupted and because mages relied heavily on their mana they ended up going insane and killing themselves. The area of land where they died was completely devoid of mana.

"Scourge of The Underworld" I received for travelling to the underworld to complete the dying wish of a friend who had died in the battle against Azrael.

She was second in terms of power to the grand mage but was passed over many times for the position because she didn't have enough experience.

I remember the moment she died. She was killed by a spell that rebounded of Azrael. I made sure to kill the mage that had fired the spell. The rest of the mages weren't particularly happy with me because of that.

Long before the emergence of the Archons, we had made a promise to each other. If she died I would travel to the underworld and partake in the trials. If you become the victor of said trials you could choose one soul that would reincarnate into a peaceful life.

There were three trials, the Trial of Pain, the Trial of Resolve and the Trial of Skill.

The Trial of Pain was just how long you could endure pain. You were tortured for what felt like an eternity. After a certain amount of time had passed the torture ended and you had passed the trial.

The Trial of Resolve was about facing overwhelming power head-on and not giving up. These test was fairly simple. You were locked in a room and the gravitational pull in the room increased minute by minute. If you reached a certain pressure you had passed the trial.

The Trial of Skill was by far the hardest. You had to duel ten different fighters ranging from martial arts to sword fighting. All of the fighters were the best at what they did so there was a very slim chance of passing this trial.

However, I managed to pass all these trials and was able to make sure my friend reincarnated in a peaceful life. Despite this, it took a while for the title to appear and it disappeared a few times as well.

"Liberator of Elysium" I got for liberating Elysium and turning it back into a working city. It was originally overrun with bandits and criminals but with the help of a few mages we cleared them out.

"Survivor of The Great Catastrophe" was a new one. I assumed I got it for not dying after my fight with Rhea. Although I had no idea how I stayed alive, she crushed my head.

"Try Hard" was the newest one I had gained. I thought it was the best title I had because it gave me four allocatable stats per level up. However "Survivor of The Great Catastrophe" also had a rather overpowered effect.

I stopped reminiscing and strode out of the tent ready to see if I could scavenge any weapons or armour.
