3 A Friend

After the announcement had been made, everyone became quieter. The captain's words still lingered in the air. The test isn't going to be easy, our lives were on the line and if we do fail to succeed, death would await us at the front door.

DING DONG

The bell for the end of dinner rang and all of us quickly dispersed out of the cafeteria. I walked slowly out into the crowded hallway, not knowing where to go next. This was our first day in the academy and I didn't know anyone. Except for 6660 that was. Before coming to the academy, we went to the same school and he was as annoying as ever even back then. I had very few friends back at school but they weren't picked to go to the academy. Instead they continued their education hoping that one day, they could finally be free.

"Ummm excuse miss."

I turned around to see a girl. She was beautiful, far more graceful and elegant compared to me.

"I think you dropped this," she said, as she handed me a necklace.

It was my mother's last gift to me before she passed away. I clenched it hard in my fist. How could I have possibly left the most precious thing I have. I felt ashamed of my action.

"Thank you for returning this to me"

"It's not a problem," she replied back.

I gave a small bow in respect and walked off.

"Wait, I didn't catch your name"

I turned back to see the girl waiting for a reply.

"It's 3911," I said.

"No silly, I meant your name not number."

At that minute I froze. It's been ages since anybody asked for my name. The last person to call my name was my mother.

"It's Aria," I replied.

"Well then, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Aria. I'm Calypso and I hope that we can be friends." With that she politely shook my hands and waved me a goodbye and we went our ways.

That night as I laid in my bed looking up at the ceiling, I felt some loneliness being lifted off my shoulders. It was the first time in quite awhile since I've felt this feeling. I don't know if it was happiness or relief, but it felt good. I felt good to finally be able to talk to someone even if I barely knew her. I wanted this moment to last.

Tomorrow our lives would be put to the test, but today I made a friend. I lifted the covers over my arms and closed my eyes hoping and praying that I would make it. I needed to.
