I watched her step behind the counter, speaking to the barista at the cash register. She placed her hand on the small of the brunette’s back and my jealousy flared. Okay, brain, knock that shit off. I have no right to be jealous of anyone, I berated myself.

It was a simple gesture that incited irritation within me for reasons beyond my understanding. No, I knew why. My feelings for Reese Garrett hadn’t abated. I finally admitted it to myself in that moment when she met my eyes across the shop and I had to look down at my e-book.

I was the last customer in the store when Cute Barista clocked out, leaving Reese and me alone. I stood, walking over to her, and watched her clean the counter for what seemed like the hundredth time. “So, why gluten-free?” I ventured.
