“That’s okay. I’ve been super busy with work and all.” She paused, glancing down at a watch on her wrist and shaking her head. “And I’ve got to get out of here or I’m going to be extremely late. I’m sorry. It was so nice seeing you. We should get together, have coffee or something,” she offered hastily.

I nodded, wanting to say something but my thoughts were inexpressible. Although she said she had to leave, she stood in front of me, her lips parted slightly, her brows drawn together in what appeared to be contemplation. I’d seen that look before. She took a breath, poised to speak when her phone rang loudly in the hushed neighborhood.

“I’ve really got to go,” she said and paused, silencing her phone, “but can I have your new number?” she asked. I smiled, spewing off the digits as she added it into her phone. And then she was gone, driving down the street like a madwoman.
