27 Oh yhea!

Waking up the next morning from a bad night's sleep I go to Jon's room to find him physically awake but mentally asleep.

"I guess you couldn't fall asleep, huh?"

I, myself, even had a hard time falling asleep so I'd be more surprised if he actually managed to pull it off. I can convince myself that something like this shouldn't influence me but emotions act independently of logic and if I, what other people might describe as a psycho without empathy, found it hard not to feel bad for them I can't imagine what Jon went through.

"Okay, you're staying here. You'd be more of a burden than a helping hand if you followed. I will only allow you to join me when you're fully rested."

"... okay."

I could sense the reluctance in that answer but I'm not letting a complete rookie run out onto the street when he can barely keep his eyes open.

"Alright then, I'm off."

He grunts back in response.

I lock the door and start walking out. A scream immediately attracts my attention. I silently debate over clearing the building so I can hurriedly make my way over to the police station or going directly to the police station so that I have a higher chance of getting all the guns. After a couple minutes the clear-the-building-first option eventually comes out on top.

Goddammit, I can't even walk a few steps out of the door without getting sidetracked.

I burst through my neighbours door.

"OH YHEA!"

Perhaps my joke wasn't appreciated since I immediately got pounced on. The earlier zombies attack without any rationality, a weakness a veteran like myself can easily take advantage of. Ducking unde his swipe I swing my bat right towards his outstretched arms, almost decapitating both of them right from the elbow. With it's arms neutralized it goes directly for the bite. With it's head in such a vulnerable position I won't decline the free kill. quckly getting back up I put both my hands on the bat and go for the finisher. Brainmatter splashing all over the place the headless zombie falls to the ground. After finding the crystal I smashed away with the rest of his brain I turn back to the lifeless zombie.

"One last swing for the road!"

I go start busting through the doors of my fellow apartmentees where one gruesome scene follows the next. I saw a girl eating her mother, a mother eating her daughter, infected people covered in the blood of their loved ones but mostly I saw apartments full of somewhat mutilated zombies. Having seen these sort of gruesome scenes quite a few times already I could maintain my rationality but most importantly my sanity. In my past life there were no shortage of people that snapped, either going completely bonkers or just offing themselves.

Whenever I found an uninfected survivor I would leave them alone. If it was a kid I'd go back to my apartment to fetch some food for them. My goodwill has limits however. I gathered them all up when I was finished.
