8 The First Evolution [1]: Selecting A Job

Chapter 8: The First Evolution [1]: Selecting A Job

"Huff, huff... wow, that was intense!" Shin gasped, feeling his heart still pounding in his chest.

He collapsed onto the ground. He turned his head to the side, staring at the lifeless body of the lizard, blood pooling around it. Some of the blood had splattered onto his face and his fur, a gruesome reminder of the battle he had just fought.

"I can't believe it...I actually hunted a Ruler!" Shin mused out loud, still in disbelief of his success. Despite his doubts, the evidence was right in front of him: the lifeless body of the Ruler, now his prey. He had succeeded in his first hunt, and now he had something to eat.

His appetite hadn't relented, and he craved to consume the reptile instantly. Hunger made him drool profusely.

Earlier, due to urgency, he simply gulped down the meat without savoring its flavor. Currently, though still famished, he ventured towards the reptile, eager to sample its taste once more.

Swiftly seizing the opportunity, he took yet another bite from the body, fully indulging in its flavor.

Shin's eyes widened in surprise and pleasure. He couldn't believe that something that looked so repulsive could actually taste so good.

"Wow! This is really tasty!" he exclaimed, savoring every bite. A smile spread across his face as he continued to savor the delicious meat.

The succulent taste of the lizard's flesh and the hunger that had been gnawing at Shin's belly drove him to devour every last morsel of meat, leaving nothing but a pile of bones in front of him.

"Ah, that was satisfying," he commented contentedly, settling back down and wearing a self-assured expression.

Feeling well-fed, his hunger pangs dissipated, leaving his belly comfortably full. After drinking some additional water, he gazed at himself in the reflection of the water, taking stock of his appearance.

"Back in my world, wolf pups wouldn't even open their eyes or stand until they were 5-10 days old. But here, I'm hunting and surviving in a matter of hours. It's remarkable how different this world is..."

"Okay, now what do I do next...?", he was wondering as there was literally nothing else for him to do.

In this new world, there was no such thing as a typical routine. He had no job, no purpose, no direction.

In his previous life, he had to constantly engage in bootlicking to his bosses just to keep his job, or even work overtime for long hours without any extra pay.

But now, in this new world, he was free from all of that. It allowed him to laze around as long as he desired, without any bounds on how much time passed.

On one hand, he found it fascinating, but on the other, he was fearful of the dangers it held. As a beast, other creatures saw him as fair game, including those who walked upright. Not only did fellow monstrosities seek to eliminate him, but so too did the two-legged hunters.

They wouldn't think twice before ending him if given the chance.

"Let's see what else this system has in store for me," Shin mumbled under his breath as he opened the system page.

"Hmmm…."

"Huh?" Shin muttered to himself, staring at his profile. His eyes widened as he realized that his leveling stat was already maxed out. It was an unexpected surprise.

It meant that no matter what he did from now on, he wouldn't be able to level up anymore.

"Seriously? I can't level up anymore?"

He was annoyed and feeling a bit disappointed. He had enjoyed the thrill of leveling up and the feeling of getting stronger, but now that it was gone, he felt a bit lost.

This would result in him struggling to survive both in hunting and self-defense.

Fortune favored him this time as the creature seemed to be outside its usual dwellings and was already seemingly weaker prior to their encounter.

He realized that he had won not because of his own skill or strength, but because of the lizard's own attack.

The sense of pride he had felt after his first successful hunt was now shattered, leaving him feeling unsure of his own abilities.

With a disheartened sigh, he mumbled to himself, "Useless...worthless...that's what I am" as he sat idly beside the remains of his prey.

As he was preparing to move on to check another stat, he noticed a button-like object located next to the Leveling stat.

'What's that...?'

His curiosity was piqued, and he couldn't help but wonder what its function was.

He questioned within himself, 'Can I click it?'

Shin gazed at the button, contemplated for an instant before finally pressing it using his tiny paw.

'Huh? I need to choose one of them?' He looked at the list of job options presented to him on the screen, feeling overwhelmed and confused.

He had no idea what any of these jobs entailed, let alone which one he should choose. It felt like an important decision that could affect his future in this new world.

Furthermore, the limited time frame made focusing difficult for him.

He paused for a moment and pondered, "Hmm, which one should I choose?" he mumbled to himself, scratching his head with his paw.

"Choosing Beserker seems to be the best option as it will boost my power," he concluded after carefully considering his options.

Being weak and vulnerable, he needed to increase his strength and having that job could multiply it several times. It could also provide him a better chance to fight or flee in dangerous situations.

Little did he know that the greatest flaw of the Beserker job was that it completely nullified intelligence while using its immense power.

Should hunger strike, he would transform into a rampaging behemoth, relentlessly laying waste to any unfortunate souls who dared cross paths with him. His insatiable appetite could turn him into a veritable force of nature.

With determination in his eyes, he firmly decided to choose the Beserker job.

"Alright! I choose-"

As he was about to confirm his decision, the timer abruptly ran out.

"Nooo! Dammit!!I took too long to think, and now the time is up!" he cursed himself, regretting his indecisiveness.

He might have selected the Beserker class had he reacted a split-second sooner.

'No, I can't be a healer... just give me anything other than the Healer job,' he pleaded with the system, hoping it would give him a different option.

He had doubts about the Healer job, fearing that it would only give him healing abilities and not much combat power.

In a battle, the ability to heal would be practically useless since he would likely be killed in an instant even before having the chance to heal himself.

"Anything but that blasted healing job!" he growled, his eyes squeezed shut in frustration. He kept repeating the same words in hopes of a miracle. He couldn't bear the thought of being a weak, defenseless healer in this dangerous world.

He fervently prayed and wished for some other job for what felt like an eternity. Just as he was about to give up hope, a notification

suddenly appeared on the screen.
