I heard a car in the usual quiet street, and you may not believe this, but the hairs on my neck stood up. I actually recognized the sound of his car and its expensive, finely-made engine. Nick’s black Jaguar was pulling up in front of my apartment building. The second he parked the car, Spencer climbed out of the passenger seat and ran up to my door. He rang twice.

And what did I do? I actually ran into the hall and put my back up against the wall, like a soldier escaping enemy fire. I can’t explain my immature reaction. The last time I’d seen Nick’s face was a month ago. He’d been calling me every other day, leaving messages, and I’d spoken to him a few times, when it was absolutely necessary, like for instance, for business or Spencer’s visits, but we hadn’t been face to face in a long time.

Spencer rang again. And again.
