"Ah, it's sweltering out today," she remarked, wiping sweat from her forehead.
"I'll treat you to a polar pop," Raven offered, "if you walk with me for just five minutes."
"Really?" Mia asked, her eyes shining.
"Can you also buy some energy drinks? I have soccer practice today."
Raven nodded his head. There was nothing he wouldn't buy for her if she asked.
Despite the sweltering heat of the sidewalk, Mia's face lit up with gratitude as they continued to walk.
After a short walk, they were relieved finally to reach the nearest MAX station.
Raven and Mia entered the store, where he purchased a popular soda along with three energy drinks, storing them in his bag with an ice pack to keep them cool.
With a satisfying hiss, Mia popped open the ice-cold polar pop and took a long, refreshing sip.
She savoured the coldness of the drink as it flowed down her throat, invigorating her tired body.
Raven's kind gesture provided a momentary escape from the oppressive summer heat.
"Yo, can I at least have a sip?" The sun beat down on Raven, his face slick with sweat as he asked the question.
Seeing the pitiful look on Raven's face, Mia gave him the entire drink.
Raven gave a slight wave, expressing his gratitude, before taking a long gulp of the ice-cold drink.
The two walked for another 20 minutes until they finally reached the high school entrance.
"Fuck everyone up at your practice." Raven said. He turned and waved goodbye to Mia, fading into the sea of students.
As Mia watched him disappear from her sight with a smile, she noticed her three friends approaching from behind.
Nora approached her and wrapped her arm around her shoulder.
"Girl, when are you going to introduce me to your brother?"
Mia snorted at her and said, "He already has one, so stop thinking about it."
She then brushed her arm off her shoulder and went to her coach.
"Hey, why do I feel a little sour?" One friend on the side said.
The other nodded and looked at Mia's back with weird eyes.
Nora paid no attention to the two.
Raven and Mia share a sibling bond as brother and sister. Their circumstances make it impossible to have a relationship. Nora thought.
Little did she know that her friend's speculations were actually true.
Raven was oblivious to the fact that two of his sister's friends believed that he and Mia shared a special connection, but even if he knew, he wouldn't give it a second thought.
At the moment, he was occupied with requesting a leave from the teacher.
"So you're telling me you're going to skip class to watch your sister's soccer practice?" Mr Howard asked.
"Yeah," Raven said with a generous nod.
The teacher let out a deep sigh and gave a slow, solemn nod of his head.
"I'm only allowing you because you passed the introductory test with flying colours. If it drops, don't blame me then."
Raven expressed his gratitude with a nod and wasted no time leaving the class as soon as the morning bell rang.
As he walked out of the school, he turned left and made his way to the expansive field.
From the stands, Raven had a bird's-eye view of the entire field.
With a quick scan, his eyes roamed around, searching for a single individual.
As soon as Raven laid eyes on his target, he knew exactly what to do. He retrieved an ice-cold energy drink from his bag and strode towards her.
He also noticed another boy buzzing around her like a bee and frowned slightly.
Not because he doesn't believe in her, but he's worried that he's too annoying and is afraid that Mia would be angry.
Raven was reminded of some experiences when Mia lost her temper and punched her friend, knocking her straight out.
It dawns on him that Nora should be the person he is thinking of.
He shook his head, determined to tackle the current problem before worrying about what may come.
Without Mia's knowledge, he silently walked beside her, cracking open the energy drink.
The cap popped open with a sharp click, causing Mia to whip around in alarm at the echoing sound.
Raven's lips curled up in amusement as he observed the girl's reaction, and he let out a light chuckle. The other guy's frown deepened as he felt a wave of annoyance wash over him.
Mia's eyes shifted from Raven to the drink in his hands, and she breathed a small sigh of relief.
She snatched the drink from his hands and savoured the cold liquid as it trickled down her throat.
Handing the drink back to him, she let out a satisfied sigh.
"Happy?" Raven asked, and downed the rest of the drink.
The ease with which Raven talked to Mia made the guy on the side feel his anger rise.
Mia didn't get a word in before he spoke up. "Dude, who the hell do you think you are?"
Raven looked at him and then turned his attention to Mia, taking her into his arms and planting a soft kiss on her head.
"Understand?"
His face turned a bright shade of red, and he stormed off, his fists tightly clenched.
"Bro, Kevin. Your girl seems to have a man." One of the guy's friends teased him.
Kevin stole a quick glance at his friend before shifting his gaze to the ball. He then turned to look over in Raven's direction, thinking about something in his head.
"Give me the ball." Kevin asked.
Once Kevin left, Raven and Mia's conversation became cheerful.
"Why did you come? Shouldn't you be in class?" Mia asked, still enjoying the comfort of Raven's embrace.
"It's fine. My English teacher knows I'm here," Raven said nonchalantly.
Mia gave a small nod, but her brows knit together in confusion. "You have communication technology right now."
"I changed my courses," Raven said between coughs.
Mia's face deteriorated further instead of improving.
"Show me your times table."
At the sight of her face darkening, Raven knew he had to act fast, so he pulled up his times table on his phone and showed her.
As Mia looked at his classes, her eyes widened in amazement.
"You're taking all enriched classes? Are you insane?"
When Mia saw his four classes, her voice raised in surprise.
Raven remained silent and flicked his phone screen to the right, revealing his test marks.
Mia took a deep breath, then opened her mouth wide, trying to calm her racing emotions before looking at her brother.
She was surprised by the extent of her brother's transformation since his past.
It would be impossible for him to achieve such marks if it was a year ago.
While Mia's mind raced with different thoughts, Kevin held a ball in his hand and threw it up into the air and kicked it straight in her direction.
Raven's keen eyes caught the movement, and he swiftly raised his arm to block the blow.
In Raven's arms, Mia felt the warmth of his embrace and the safety it provided.
Kevin's face fell as he watched Raven deflect the ball, his disappointment clear in his flashing eyes.
Raven bent down and picked up the ball, turning to face Kevin.
"Vanessa, calculate and perform the motion of kicking the ball at that kid's head."
[Yes Raven.]
Raven's mind was inundated with information as his body instinctively kicked the ball with lightning-fast speed, striking Kevin squarely in the face.
Mia's eyebrows shot up in surprise as she looked at Raven. Raven's soccer skills came as a surprise to her.
Kevin put his hands to his nose, feeling a rush of heat run down his nose.
"Oh? Looks like I broke his nose." Raven chuckled.
Mia looked at Kevin and couldn't help but gloat, as he covered his nose with his hands. He was constantly in her space, doing various actions to impress her, and it was becoming quite irritating.
Mia gazed unblinkingly into Raven's eyes as she settled into his embrace, basking in the comforting warmth.
Raven, feeling her stare, glanced down at her in his embrace.
"What? Want to learn?"
He says this with unwavering confidence.
Mastering the mechanics of a pro player is possible with just one night of studying, even without physical ability.
With a small smile, Mia nodded her head. Anytime she can get to spend time with him is precious to her.
Raven's smile was warm as he promised to teach her starting tomorrow, and for all the tomorrows to come.
