55 The first calamity

29.05.2034

Ben was on a tower, which had a great view of the city. Everyone in this city was either at home or at the FERMI event.

On his back, a bag filled 25 different grenades, a first aid box and water & food.

In his hands an American semi-automatic anti-materiel precision rifle named Barrett M107 and his lovely 500 S&W Magnum.

What made this rifle so perfect was that it was semi-automatic, which meant that it didn't had to be reloader with each shoot and additionally anti-materiel, which meant that it was meant for very hard objects like tanks. Its distance was around 1,830 m, which would be more than enough for his situation. It had 10 bullets per Magazine and 853 m/s as Muzzle velocity. Ben had become a big fan of such masterpiece.

What Ben loved about grenades is that there was practically one for each situation. There existed mainly Frag grenade, Nail grenade, Concussion grenade, Impact grenade, Smoke grenade, Poison grenade, Flash grenade and chaff grenade.

Ben had 5 Frag grenades, 5 Concussion grenade, 2 Impact grenades, 3 Smoke grenades, 5 Flash grenades and 5 Poison grenades.

The grenades he took, where the most helpful against different monsters, the poison grenades were filled with gas that are the most effective against monster.

These monsters have a very high resistance, so the grenades had to be either crazily deadly or weakening/confusing the monsters.

Hydrogen sulfide has a powerful smell. It will easily desensitize the nose. After that it can shut down the breathing center in the brain, which stops the breathing reflex and kills the victim from asphyxiation.

Sarin, a famous nerve agent is poisonous liquids, that easily evaporate. They shut down biochemical processes that allow muscles to relax. The result is that all muscles contract, including muscles required for breathing, causing death by asphyxiation.

The day for which Ben trained for 3 years has finally come.

He learned, trained, accumulated and bought everything he needed for this day.

Ben was greatly excited, but also anxious to end up being killed by a monster by surprise.

One minute remained before the first portal would be activated. Ben was greatly worried that he somehow caused a Butterfly effect, which would this time cause a family member to die in the first calamity.

He wasn't worried about his friends as they probably were home or worked at a vacation job.

At the event, Klaus Bufferword had finished his speech.

„From this moment we will all look back in the future. It will be imprinted in our history books.

Today is the day humanity will explore new worlds.

Thanks to our FERMI Portal." The public was clapping like crazy. They were convinced by his words.

Klaus Bufferword pushed a button, which activated the portal. The public knew nothing of what was happening. They only saw on a large TV a giant construction of metall, which was making sounds and producing lights. It looked impressive with its giant portal like frame. Suddenly a small black point appaired in the middle of the frame. Slowly growing. Than growing faster and suddenly light came from the portal.

The light was so bright that nobody could see what was happenning.

The sudden change of gravity near the portal trigered a domino-effect, which destabilized the portal in a matter of seconds. The leader of the FERMI project reacted to the change and tried to stabilize the portal. He increased the input of the stabilization device to its maximum. As the leader of the most important international project, the pressure was high and he was in charge of the project.

The domino effect was strengthened by the negative mass.

From the goal of a stabilized portal, it ended up to be a white hole.

Suddenly an explosion happenned and the camera, which recorded the portal was destroyed. Although Klaus Bufferword preached the public to calm down, nobody listened to the internationally well-known scientist. Some ran. Other stayed still. The only thing in common was the confusion and panic inside their head.

The building, which contained the portal exploded and a thick fog-like dust decreased the visibility in the city .

At this moment, the people didn't enter Ben's mind and sight. He was positioned in a typical sniper position and waited to see the first monster.

It wasn't evident that monster would suddenly come out of the fog, but Ben had heard the stories of the few survivor.

His heart began to rise to its absolute maximum. Ben saw something moving in the fog.

If he hadn't been two kilometers away from the monster, his first reaction would have been to run away.

With the passing of seconds, it was more and more clear what was inside the fog.

It was the same size as a large dog with the head of a rodent. Black in colour and running on all fours. He would have said it looked like a giant rat however its body parts were muscular around its arms, while its body remained incredibly thin. So much so that the outline of its ribs could be seen.

The monster was running at around 85 km/h in his direction.

The fear Ben felt for the monster turned into a pity. The ugly monster was running for its life. Its speed may seem fast for us, but it was just slightly faster than the fastest dog. Its body didn't had any armor like skin and was an easy target for him.

It was running for its life as a weak and low-leveled monster transported to an unknown place with many stronger monster.

Ben aimed at the monster with his rifle. Stabilizing his breath. Readying his mind.

´My poor ugly little friend. I will put you out of your miserie. Rest in peace!´

Ben shot…

...The monster suddenly seemed to loose control and it rolled a few meter uncontrolled. If Ben had inspected the corpse, he would have seen a hole just next to its right eye.

Ben was looking back for other monsters. He saw a multitude of different monsters, which had appeared near the dense fog.
