First hunt

4.06.2034

Today was the first day Ben was going to try catching a monster.

This morning, he injected himself again with SIENA-P7. Again no skill awakening took place. Ben finished his normal morning routine and left the house saying he was going to work.

Walking to the Mercedes Sprinter, Ben was looking if anybody could be following him, but at 6 am the street was void of life except some work-pendler.

After going inside, he drove for over 5 hours to arrive at a city named Gardelegen.

Hungry and tired of driving, he went inside an Italian restaurant to eat pasta.

After finishing the plate, Ben was thinking about what he was doing in Gardelegen.

´It may not be a good source, but near the town some accidents happened and many rumors about a monster appeared. While rumors weren't a prove for an existing monster especially not just after the speech, it was one of the only indices he had for now.´

Ben wandered through the forest around the town to look for possible indices. He did find some animals, but they were either common or harmless.

At least nothing that could have been like the rumors described.

Just before going back home, Ben visited the town.

He ended up in a bar. It was strange to be here, but Ben had to confess that it was a good place to hear about town-related information.

Thinking that there was nothing interesting in the town, he went out.

On the way, he heard two adults talk about a car accident.

Ben puzzled the informations together and came with the result that:

´So, a few days ago a man with the name Fredy Albirne had a car accident. In the hospital, he talked about how a giant insect had crossed the street in the night. Nobody knew if he really had seen the monster as there wasn't any proof for that.

The man had a BAC of 0.20 percent that night, so his statement wasn't taken seriously. Still with the last speech and the little town, the information spread here fast.

Although it wasn't sure that the monster existed, it explained why Ben didn't find it.

It was probably nocturnal and an insect could perfectly hide.

Knowing that he came, when the rumors had only just begun, he hoped that the monster didn't leave the region. Making a call to his family to inform them that he would come back late for a problem on the first day of work, which had to be solved.

Ben bought a strong pocket flashlight and also an insecticide spray dose. Insecticides usually work like nerve gas agents used in warfare. They are applied at low doses so that – at least in theory – only the insects will be directly affected.

Insecticides can be classified by their mechanism of action. The insecticide, which came to buy, where as follows:

-Organochlorine compounds work on insects by opening what's known as the sodium ion channel in the neurons or nerve cells of insects, causing them to fire spontaneously. The insect will go into spasms and eventually die. DDT was the earliest of these chlorinated hydrocarbons, but DDT and many others in this class have been banned from general use in most countries.

-Organophosphates also work on the nervous system, but they keep the nerve cells from communicating with each other. Normally, nerve cells in the brains or muscles of humans or insects send tiny electrical pulses down tendril to the end ot the cell where the pulse has to jump across a gap – known as a synapse – to another nerve cell. A chemicals known as ACh moves from one cell to the other and binds with the new cell, sending the electrical pulse down the new cell. These insecticides – and nerve gas agents that are closely related – prevent the ACh from coming loose from the new cell, so it can't receive any more impulses. The insects can't function and die.

-Malathion is a common insecticide in this class and was famous for treating infestations of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly and West Nile Virus-carrying mosquitoes.

Carbamates have similar properties to the organophosphates, but last in the environment for a much shorter time period. They are thought to be less toxic.

-Pyrethroids are synthetic compounds that mimic the action of chemicals in the Chrysanthemum flower. They are considered to be among the safest insecticides because they break down when exposed to light. They are used particularly against lice and other household pests.

-Neonicotinoids are the synthetic versions of nicotine and make insects jumpy, with leg tremors, rapid wing motion, disoriented movement, paralysis and death. But they are not as toxic in mammals (including humans) because they work on a neural pathway that is more abundant in insects. But some of these chemicals have recently been banned in places because they might be contributing to the collapse of colonies of honey bees that are vital to pollinating many crops.

Thanks to the many bans of very effective insecticides, Ben had less to choose from Obi, which was only a few kilometers away from the town Ben bought the spray dose.

Although many insecticides were helpful in fighting off any insect-like monster, adventurers only used the on-contact and fast-acting insecticide.

So Ben finished by buying a „Detia Professional Pyrethrum Insect Spray".

The reason he hadn't bought insecticide for the monster at Sergy, was mostly because he didn't know what sort of monster would be there.

Insect spray only had a certain range to spray. With the difference in levels, he would lose his life before using the spray.

In normal cases, he would never even think about using something toxic to kill. As it didn't give him the exp. The government would use insecticide against the insect, the moment they were too strong or too many.

Even so, Ben didn't have a good weapon or any gun, so he wanted to have at least a second option.

Pyrethrum affects the neurological system of insects. Upon contact with Pyrethrum-treated surfaces, mosquitos, ticks, chiggers and other insects will fall off almost immediately, nearly all will die from this brief contact.

Pyrethrins are effective insecticides because they selectively target insects rather than mammals due to higher insect nerve sensitivity, smaller insect body size, lower mammalian skin absorption, and more efficient mammalian hepatic metabolism.

Naturally monsters were a lot bigger than the normal animals, but their threats still remained, which even though its resistance was better than their weaker counterpart they would still be strongly affected by it.

Having finished the preparation, Ben again wandered through the forest.

Sadly except finding normal animals, he didn't find anything.

At around 2 am, Ben decided to head back home.

Arriving home in just 4 hours, he went to bed, while everyone was still sleeping.

Evading the questions his family had for him and his job.

Dear Readers, you are probably wondering, why I am giving so much information about insecticide.

The story is quiet connected to reality, so I naturally tried to inform me as much as possible.

Thus I often give these unesecary parts, but I hope it still helps to imagine better the world.

As for the title? It doesn‘t goes that well with the chapter, but I guess you can call it a hunt even if it fails.
